Summary/Abstract: The peer-reviewed collective scientific monograph presents the reports from the first of its type scientific conference, which aimed not so much to highlight specific problems and themes from the cultural landscape of the three South Slavic countries - Bulgaria, Macedonia and Slovenia, but to look for promising concepts for our closer spiritual rapprochement: which themes, realities and stereotypes are interesting and attractive to us in the other, which are the natural paths of interpenetration between close cultures that originated and developed on the same land and were artificially separated by foreign ideological interventions not only in the apocalyptic twentieth century, but also several centuries before that.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is a continuation of my studies on the question of the creation of the famous Konikovo Gospel, as a result of which I have proposed that Nathaniel of Zographou, Bulgarian Exarchate Metropolitan of Ohrid (1872 – 1880), Lovech (1880 – 1891) and Plovdiv (1891 – 1906). In the convolutes Зогр. 107 and 161-51 I found previously unknown working translations written by Nathanael of Zographou, which are identical in text and handwriting to the bilingual manuscript from the library of the Patriarchate of Alexandria (Alex. 268). In the present article I publish Nathanael’s fully preserved Greek transcripts and Bulgarian translations of the Gospel reading of the Paschal Vespers of Love. Based on a comparative textual analysis, I study the process of the creation of the Konikovo Gospel, which I now propose to consider as a corpus of Greek and Bulgarian texts written in colloquial language with Greek script and compiled by Nathanael of Zographou. A key to understanding the context of the Konikovo Gospel corpus is the complete service gospel written by Nathanael in colloquial Greek, ZGr 54-164, which is also the prototype of the codex Alex. 268, also written by him. I propose that the compilation of the Konikovo Gospel corpus be dated around the middle of the 19th century, and more specifically in the period 1848 – 1852, i.e. after Nathanael was ordained a hieromonk (1848) and before the partial translation edition in Thessaloniki with editor Pavel Bozhigrobski (1852).

- Summary/Abstract:Writing is not only a process of perpetual interpretation, but also successive adaptation to different cultural realities. In this context, translation as a kind of writing is also successive adaptation to different cultural realities. This paper begins with some general theoretical observations about the very act of translation by Vesna Mojsova-Čepiševska, then showing how this works through the experiences with translation of Sonja Dolžan (from Slovenian into Macedonian and from Macedonian into Slovenian) and of Duško Krstevski (from Bulgarian into Macedonian), focusing on the problems they face while translating and coming up with the most appropriate solutions.

- Summary/Abstract:This article examines the translations of „Zdravljica“ (“Cheers”) by France Prešern into Serbian (by Desanka Maksimović), into Macedonian (by Vlada Uroševik' and Gane Todorovski) and into Bulgarian (by Lyudmil Dimitrov). The first part presents the theory for translation of poetry and turning a poem to a song. The main facts around the creation of „Zdravljica“’s original are concisely relayed. In the second part the translations are analysed and commented on from a theoretical viewpoint, as the focus in each particular case is on interpreting the translator’s approach, which (may be) is „translation – recreating the meaning“, „translation – recreating the form“ and „translation – a compromise between reproduction and meaning“.

- Summary/Abstract:The thirtieth anniversary of the death of Ivan Cankar in 1948 was marked in Sofia with the staging of his play “The King of Betajnova”, and of particular importance is the fact that the translation is the work of the great Bulgarian poetess Elisaveta Bagryana. - Summary/Abstract:Bagrjana is not only an established poet, but is also a cultural phenomenon, excellently presented in a book Bagrjana and Slovenia by Ljudmil Dimitrov and Ljudmila Malinova-Dimitrova. The authors in that monography were researching »the biggest world poet of Bolgaria« and »Slovenian« – this last nickname is especially groundbreaking for Slovenians, acquired due to her important role of mediator for culture between Bolgaria and Slovenia at the beginning of the 20th century. In my discussion, I seek to research by comparative-interpretative analysis the Bagrjana poems of two books, translated in Slovene: already mentioned book Bagrjana and Slovenija (2011) and the oldest one, Bagrjana (1978). Her poetics in that poems, partly similar to poetics of Novy and Gradnik, is defined by modernized traditionalism of three sets, three-part composition and exit from the patriarchal matrix, and on the level of topics are existential restlessness, life lust, a spark of creativity, a wandering destiny of an artist and the secret of being.

- Summary/Abstract:In the present article I propose a structural analysis of Teodor Trayanov’s poem “The New Day” („Новият ден“), aimed predominantly at students of Bulgarian Studies for whom Bulgarian is not their native tongue. The purpose is to demonstrate how the main motif and the phases of its unfurling find an “index” equivalent in the language and text characteristics of the poem. Although different linguistic and literary approaches are used in the analysis, for the purposes of a Literature Studies education they have all been “translated” through the most accessible terminology of descriptive grammar. At the same time, a translation of the poem into German is offered, which could assist in presenting the accents in the original more directly.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses aspects of the reception of Bulgarian literature in Greece through the prism of the newly-published Anthology of Bulgarian Poetry (2019). Compiler and translator of the Anthology is the poet and translator Kostas Barboutis, who is also behind the new Greek translation of Bay Ganyo. The present article is the first, student, analysis of the Anthology. The text looks at the compiler’s choices and at their concept for the cannon of Bulgarian literature, as presented in the foreword of the book. The authors of the article compare some of Kostas Barboutis’ translations and earlier ones. Two of the poems in the Anthology are analysed more thoroughly – “Mirror” by Athanas Dalchev (first translation by Aris Diktaios, 1971) and “Roofs” by Lyubomir Levchev (first translation by Christos Chartomatsidis, 2004). Additionally, to the article has been added a list of what the Anthology contains, including the titles of the poems in translation and in the original Bulgarian.

- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on the philosophical aspects and references of Georgi Gospodinov's two novels, Natural Novel and Physics of Sorrow, which are conceptually based on the pre-Socratic philosophy and practical examples of an atomistic novel. Since Gospodinov in his writing operates on the field between science and literature, article tries to elaborate relationship of the two by using (pre-Socratic) philosophy as one of their meeting points. In doing so it endeavours to illustrate their reciprocal significance, while also emphasizing the preserving function of literature, the idea which lies in the core of Gospodinov's prose.

- Summary/Abstract:The novel The Physics of Sorrow includes the infusion of a contemporary author’s reading of the myth of the Minotaur. The story unravels at different points in space and time, depicting the problems of contemporary societies or the character’s. Philosophy, science and the personal experiences of the character create a multifaceted work filled with symbols, mysticism, new philosophical questions. The feeling of melancholy and sorrow is felt throughout. The article analyses the philosophical layer of the work, distinctive characteristics of the main characters, the symbols used and the translation into Greek. A few problematic places in the translation are discussed, as they hinder the Greek reader, and a general evaluation of the work is made.

- Summary/Abstract:Lidija Dimkovska is a writer with a distinctive authorial presence in at least three contexts (Macedonian, Slovenian, and Romanian); she has received numerous international awards which make her creative output highly visible beyond this regional spread. In considering the Bulgarian translations of her works one can discern the whole range of interferences which characterize contemporary cultural transfer. The paper discusses this spectrum at different levels: the role played by institutions and their strategies for cultural contact; the charismatic media image of the Macedonian writer; the heightened reader response to her novels; the selective presentation of her poetry, especially the total suspension of her political poetry; the absence of in-depth critical engagement with her work and so on and so forth. Casting an analytical look into the Bulgarian readings of Lidija Dimkovska’s texts inevitably yields a “diagnosis” about the status of the current cultural context in Bulgaria.

- Summary/Abstract:The article compares the status of intercultural linguistic mediation of children’s literature in Slovenia and in North Macedonia. The status has been observed in two stages; the first one covers the years 1945 to 1990 and the second from 1991 to 2018. The article also states which literary works have been translated during these two time periods and names the translators. Furthermore, it demonstrates whether or not the translations comply with literary production of the individual country and presents the ratio between the number of translations from Slovenian language to Macedonian and vice versa.

- Summary/Abstract:Bulgarian literature in the distant European North is unknown for both Swedish readers and literary scholars. The ‘real’ readers of our native literature in Sweden are the students, who participate in the courses in Bulgarian at Uppsala University. By examining exams, papers, abstracts, analyses, and coursework, written between 2014 and 2017, we can understand how and what they discover in the Bulgarian literature. Their literary expedition suggests that the perception of a literary text is strongly related to the place and time at which it is read. The article argues also that the interpretation of one and the same literary work depends on the readers’ individual situation.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper discusses the role of the film in teaching South Slavic cultures on the example of studies in South Slavic languages and literatures at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. Special attention will be paid to the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Slovenian (post-socialist) cinema in the last thirty years (during the transition). Given the changes in the South Slavic world, as well as the different cultural and socio-political contexts that preceded the changes in 1989 and 1990, contemporary film has a multifaceted role in teaching – to point out obvious differences, but even more so similarities and connections between all South Slavic cultures and cultural processes in the given period. In the paper I will share personal experiences from working with students on the course Film in the South Slavic context.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to present Bulgarian, Macedonian and Slovenian youth literature in representative international monographs and institutions. The international interest in the South Eastern Europe so-called countries has increased between the Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989 till 2010. Before that the international monographs were Anglo-American -oriented, and between 1990 and 2010 they partially represented children’s literature in Bulgaria, Macedonia and Slovenia. After 2010 the international monographs will concentrate on so-called international children’s literature.

- Summary/Abstract:This report discusses some peculiarities in the expression of reportative attitude within the category of evidentiality in the Bulgarian and Slovenian languages. Evidentiality is considered in the field of the broader grammatical category of modality and the Bulgarian renarrative forms of the verb, serving for the formation of renarrative, conclusive and dubitative, and the Slovenian particles baje and menda are compared in functional-semantic aspect.

- Summary/Abstract:“Slavonic-Bulgarian History” by the monk Paisius of Hilendar is considered one of the most significant books and one of the underlying causes for the Bulgarian National Revival. As far as Bulgarian-Greek relations are concerned, this work “traditionally” creates polarized notions about the author’s “sympathy” towards the Greeks. For Bulgarians, the History and Paisius himself have been put on the highest pedestal for years now, while the attitudes about “sympathies” and “antipathies” have been rethought by modern Bulgarian historiography. The article offers a quick overview of the Greek historiography on the topic, which gives its evaluation about Paisius of Hilendar’s work. Nowadays, historians on both sides are converging more and more in their reading of the History, but still not quite completely.

- Summary/Abstract:As a methodology the article uses the theory of adaptation, the postulates of intertextuality and of Postmodernism. It analyses the reasons for the selection of the new adaptation. “Nora Nora” revisits “A Doll’s House”, which generated Modernism in drama, through the technique of fragmentation, the reversal of power relations, and the predominance of game, exposed in language as well as in quotations and their ironic turning, so that it fits perfectly into the model of postdramatic theatre. The Slovenian play builds on Ibsen’s cognitive model of the relationship between gender, social structures and modernity using the principle of collage drawing from masterpieces by Ingmar Bergman and Thomas Ostermeier.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the relations between Yugoslavia and Bulgaria at the end of the World War II, and in this context analyzes various ideas of their integration, which emerged either among Bulgarian or Yugoslav authorities or among the most influential international actors. The author first describes the key interwar factors and events that influenced the formation of states in post-war Southeast Europe, and in this context identifies the motives for and against the various ideas of the Yugoslav-Bulgarian (con)federation. In the second part, the author analyzes the role of the (con) federal idea in the period of rapprochement between the two communist countries and presents the key events that determined the dramatic turn in Bulgarian-Yugoslav relations in 1948, when the idea was abandoned.

- Summary/Abstract:The text considers silence as a phenomenon in art and its relations with languages / discourses, but also with its apophatic figures – the absence of voice-noise-speech and its constant ability to generate plots, stories, dialogues, to provoke and pass into unexpected dimensions: to be seen, perceive, felt in the conditions of a special psycho-emotional state, which adjusts the consciousness of the reflecting person and stimulates him to creativity. The author shares his creative experience with works of fine art, modeled at different times and with different intensity of his stage experiments in the theater. It ends with a summary of one of the most famous Slovenian directors in Europe – Jernej Lorenci – answering questions related to the silence in the theater, asked him specifically by the author.

- Summary/Abstract:The research is focused on the presence of the Slovenian and Bulgarian poets at the renowned international poetry festival Struga Poetry Evenings, one of the oldest poetry festivals in the world, which takes place each year in Struga on Ohrid Lake. It should be noted that among the laureates of the highest recognition awarded by the Struga Poetry Evenings, the “Golden Wreath” award for poetic output, are one Slovenian poet – Tomaž Šalamun in 2009 and one Bulgarian poet – Ljubomir Levchev in 2010. In the context of presenting national poetries, an anthology of contemporary Slovenian poetry was published in 2013, while in the “Pleiades” edition, several Slovenian and Several Bulgarian poets are represented with separate poetry collections. Struga Poetry Evenings as one of the most significant culture manifestations in Macedonia today has an important role in the reception of the Slovenian and Bulgarian poetry.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper is focused on the radical deconstruction of Julia Kristeva on the notion of foreigner (stranger), offered in her seminal, intriguingly entitled book “Strangers To Ourselves” (published in 1988), on the cosmopolitan redefinition of the traditional concept of stranger. The foreigner (etrangere) happens to be probably the most paradigmatic or particularly intriguing figure of interest, in the context of contemporary (existential) literature and philosophy in France, including the inventive approach and notorious books of Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Morice Blanchot, Vladimir Jankelevicz, Emile Cioran, Jacques Derrida. Adopting the traces of Freud`s psychoanalysis (which she personally practicised, as well, being a therapist), Kristeva elaborates unorthodox reinterpretation of stranger (traditionally perceived as an alien, coming from the outside), this time, on the contrary, as the immanent figure (hidden face) of the very subject. This paper also recognizes the existential background of Kristeva, based on its` linguistic, gender, ethno- cultural differences, amidst French culture, so that Kristeva herself happens to be tripled (three-some) kind of Stranger or Othereness, on her own. Hence, her initial status of a stranger, finally served to present a challenging notion (and perspective) of a creatively productive strangeness, which continues to also inspire next generations of scholars, even 30 years, since its` original publishing, when the issue of Stranger became unavoidable part of reality.
