Summary/Abstract: Lidija Dimkovska is a writer with a distinctive authorial presence in at least three contexts (Macedonian, Slovenian, and Romanian); she has received numerous international awards which make her creative output highly visible beyond this regional spread. In considering the Bulgarian translations of her works one can discern the whole range of interferences which characterize contemporary cultural transfer. The paper discusses this spectrum at different levels: the role played by institutions and their strategies for cultural contact; the charismatic media image of the Macedonian writer; the heightened reader response to her novels; the selective presentation of her poetry, especially the total suspension of her political poetry; the absence of in-depth critical engagement with her work and so on and so forth. Casting an analytical look into the Bulgarian readings of Lidija Dimkovska’s texts inevitably yields a “diagnosis” about the status of the current cultural context in Bulgaria.
