Summary/Abstract: This volume brings together research in language, culture, and foreign language education, offering an interdisciplinary view of contemporary linguistic and pedagogical practices. The first section explores how linguistic structures interact with cultural models, examining fiction, historical narratives, political discourse, and metaphor as expressions of cultural identity and intercultural influences. The writer, with 21 years of experience as a war correspondent, draws on his background to construct with great realism the images, settings, and conflicts that underpin the plots of his novels. His almost impressionistic descriptions, a result of his direct contact with battlefields, armed confrontations and complex protagonists, portray in detail environments and characters, as well as their gestures, conversations and fears. Furthermore, Pérez-Reverte depicts his scenes with photographic precision, reflecting his familiarity with the art of photography.

- Summary/Abstract:I do not know if it is known in the united Europe that the single European currency, the euro, has as its precedent the single coins for Europe and Asia, which Alexander the Great forged from the untold riches of the Achaemenids. Alexander the Great, the initiator of the first European expansion – to the east, the catalyst of the productive forces of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, the monarch who outgrew even the most enlightened mind of his time, and not only, erasing the boundaries between victors and vanquished, has survived for 24 centuries in the literary tradition. The first “image-maker” of Alexander is Callisthenes, a relative of Alexander’s teacher Aristotle. The Bulgarian literary tradition precedes the Spanish one with our Chronographic Alexandria from the 10th-12th centuries, also enriched by Alexandria, conditionally called Serbian, from the 14th century. Spain, for its part, is an inseparable part of the Romanesque world of Medieval Western Europe, with one aggravating specificity – the Arab presence.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines some metaphors related to the five basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and spicy (including bland, or rather, lacking in flavor), which have been chosen as the source domain in a contrastive study of Spanish and Bulgarian. The results obtained in the analysis of the projections of the gustatory area onto different target domains in the contrasted languages could provide some clues in search for the common “prints” – but also “sifted” by cultural traditions – in the paths that metaphorical thinking follows in the two linguistic communities.

The empirical material reveals an image of Bulgaria as lagging in its democratic transition, lacking managerial culture, and facing significant economic and environmental challenges. Through personal examples, Thatcher emphasizes the interdependence between political freedom and economic liberalization, supporting the idea of a gradual and controlled transition. The study highlights the rhetorical strategies used to legitimize the neoliberal model for reforms in post-communist countries.

- Summary/Abstract:The object of this paper is Spanish accentology in a contrastive study with Bulgarian word stress and sentence stress. The subject of this article are the universal, typological and specific characteristics of the Spanish accentema and their expression in the interlanguage of Bulgarians who are acquiring Spanish as a second and foreign language (SFL). The purpose of this work is to identify the deviations from Spanish orthoepic norms, manifested as a xenolect and prosodic interference in the pronunciation of Bulgarian learners, and to propose a theoretical model for the assessment of their errors (deviations from the language system) and mistakes (occasional deviations) in the course of Corrective Phonetics. The conclusions confirm the universal and the specific trends in the acquisition of prosodic systems of natural languages.

- Summary/Abstract:The internationalization of entrepreneurial activity provides a number of benefits for businesses and consumers, but it also presents entrepreneurs with many challenges, including effective communication in a multicultural environment. It is shown that cultural entrepreneurship has the potential to bring people together with different linguistic, social and historical-cultural backgrounds. The paper aims to explore and analyse the role of one of the most popular arts – dance, which overcomes borders and is an integral part of the cultural identity of societies. The importance of digitalization in cultural entrepreneurship is also discussed, and more specifically, the popularization of dance art and the internationalization of training through the use of modern technologies.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the latest project of lecturer researchers from several departments of New Bulgarian University (NBU) – the yearbook Cross-Cultural Communication. The idea, which was conceived in late autumn 2022 at a meeting of NBU’s Reading Club at the presentation of the proceedings from the jubilee conference Business Communication, Language, Literature and Culture – dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the MA program Business Communication (fulltime and distance learning) and the 25th anniversary of the BA program Russian Studies (with English as a second foreign language), and supported by the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria – began to materialize in 2023 with an edition of nearly 600 pages. The authors of the articles vividly illustrate that we live in an age of globalization, cultural convergence and interaction, linguistic diversity, and rapidly changing priorities – in which each of us becomes an intermediary or mediator in various forms of communication. An example of such interaction is the existence and success of different interdisciplinary programs worldwide and at NBU, where mediation skills accompany the acquisition of foreign languages, emphasizing communication and interaction between different disciplines and cultures.

The object of study are positions of deviating rendition of the original in the published Bulgarian translation of the novel I’m Not Stiller (German title: Stiller) by the Swiss author Max Frisch. An algorithm of three steps in the analysis of the differences between the text in German and the text in Bulgarian is presented and options for their overcoming are pointed out.

- Summary/Abstract:AI‐based language training has been shown to improve language proficiency among high school and similar language learners. In one study, a Duolingo intervention produced a 12% gain on tests of vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and writing compared with a 6% gain in a traditional setting. An intervention using an unspecified AI tool also led to better reading comprehension, gap filling, and matching outcomes. ChatGPT‐based training yielded large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.76 – 0.88) in writing tasks, while a standardized vocabulary test reported significant gains (t = –18.186, p < 0.001). AI tools that feature gamification and personalized feedback tend to enhance student motivation. Studies report that adaptive apps such as GPT‐3.5, Speeko, and ELSA Speak increase intrinsic motivation, willingness to communicate, and overall engagement. Personalized AI features can enhance motivation and enjoyment in language learning, even without immediate vocabulary gains, highlighting their value in structured language programs.

- Summary/Abstract:The report examines some practical aspects and interesting case studies in the study or improvement of foreign languages through other (foreign, non-native) languages – in whole or in part. The latter from the point of view of the teacher who conducts classes in Bulgarian means two main cases – when foreign language teaching is conducted entirely in another foreign (for the teacher or the student) language or when it is conducted mainly in Bulgarian, but numerous examples of a second foreign language are given for the purpose of better study and work with the main one studied, i.e. partially. Naturally, the application of such practices is possible only when the teacher has good, mostly theoretical knowledge of several languages and can find and use this analogue from the other language(s) to support the learner, who in turn is preferable, but not always necessary to have knowledge of the auxiliary language from/in which examples are given. Sometimes it is necessary to give an elementary and easily understandable example from this language (especially if there is no suitable one in Bulgarian) in order to understand something from the main language being taught. The report provides both suitable examples and individual elements of comparative linguistics, and the cited cases are mainly from English, French, German and Spanish.

- Summary/Abstract:Language is deeply embedded in culture, and culture, at both national and organizational levels, interacts with socio-economic factors in shaping digitalization within a country. Foreign language education must be intertwined with the culture of the language being taught, as this approach enhances language acquisition by providing context, promoting a deeper understanding, and fostering intercultural competence. Foreign language teaching has a long and successful tradition at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE). Since the university was founded in 1920, it has always played a significant role in the academic education of students in the fields of economics and business, international relations, and diplomacy. Today, in the digital era, the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics at UNWE not only provides practical foreign language training in the academic community, but it also encourages and fosters intercultural communication. The main goal of the department is to deliver modern foreign language training, in line with the standards of the Council of Europe and it provides specialized foreign language training in the field of economics, international relations, diplomacy, business communications, etc. in English, German, French, Spanish and Russian, which are studied as first and second foreign languages, as well as Bulgarian language training for foreigners. The contributions and achievements of the long-standing head of the department, Prof. Daniela Koch-Kozhuharova, in improving the quality of foreign language education, as well as maintaining close ties with embassies in Sofia and with Bulgarian and foreign universities, deserve recognition and appreciation by the academic community. It is also important to mention the active role and personal engagement of Prof. Daniela Koch-Kozhuharova in organizing and conducting international conferences and seminars on significant topics such as “Innovative Educational Technologies in Foreign Language Teachingˮ (2017) and “Intercultural Communication – Cultural Specificity and Linguistic Universalsˮ (2019). Stimulated by the work of Prof. Daniela Koch-Kozhuharova, we tackle the theme of foreign language education and diplomacy in the digital era, which is reflected across her academic career and prolific scholarship. Digital diplomacy and language in the digital age are intertwined facets shaping contemporary international relations. The strategic integration of digital tools with linguistic proficiency is essential for diplomats to effectively navigate the complexities of global communication, bridge cultural divides, and build meaningful connections in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is dedicated to the study of the interference of Bulgarian language as a mother tongue and English language in the process of learning Spanish as a foreign language, level A1- A2. After reviewing the basic concepts and types of interference (the sources include classic international authorities and their contemporary Spanish followers), the analysis proceeds to the phonetic level (/Ɵ/ – /s/, /b/ – /v/), morphological level (noun: gender, number; verb: tense agreement, reflexive verbs; pronouns: reflexive pronouns, form, personal pronouns as subjects, usage; adverbs; prepositions), syntactic level: word order in the noun phrase, lexical level where the interference comes only from English, ortography and punctuation. The aim of the study is to systematize the main errors and to provide theoretical and practical support for teaching.

Drawing on sociolinguistic approaches to power and Conversation Analysis (CA), the research hypothesizes that a reduction in the examiner's affiliative affect (facial mirroring) correlates with an increase in the examinee’s embodied tension (gaze aversion).

- Summary/Abstract:Globalization processes in the contemporary world impact all major spheres of activity. They influence not only the economic and political landscape of different countries but also the evolution of language. These processes are particularly evident in the banking sector. While banking products are primarily offered in English, their growing international availability necessitates the search for appropriate terminological equivalents in other languages. In Eastern European countries, including the Russian-speaking world and, specifically, Bulgaria, private banking has developed rapidly over recent decades. Consequently, the Russian and Bulgarian lexicons now incorporate numerous specialized English terms that previously had no equivalents, posing challenges for translators, specialists, educators, and students alike. This article employs authentic English, Russian, and Bulgarian materials to conduct a comparative analysis of the semantic and grammatical development of selected banking terms and to propose a systematization of these terminological correspondences.
