Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the role of foreign languages as a key element of the quality of tourism services and career development in tourism. The research combines two empirical approaches: a survey among students in the field of tourism and an analysis of job listings in the sector. The aim is to identify similarities and differences between students' expectations, their foreign language background and the actual requirements of the labour market. The results outline the most frequently sought languages, students' expectations and the importance of language education for the quality of service in tourism and for the career development of the sector’s employees.
