- Summary/Abstract:Background of the study: In the conditions of a pandemic, the teaching of the Bulgarian language provoked radical changes in the preparation of the Bulgarian teacher. The transition from face-to-face to online training had to be extremely fast. In this problematic situation digital competence for teaching has become extremely significant. Purpose and research question: This qualitative study is an attempt to make a comparative analysis of teachers’ self-assessment of digital competence for teaching Bulgarian before the pandemic and during the pandemic. Based on this analysis the research question is: what are the changes in this competence in view of the self-assessment of the participants e.g. which of the skills have improved, which are not well developed, which need to be improved. Theoretical framework/perspectives: In order to identify the changes in the digital competence for teaching, the European Framework for Self-Assessment of Digital Competence (translated into Bulgarian) and its tools are used. Methodology (methods and data sources): The target group includes bachelors – students of Slavic philology, undergraduates – teachers of Bulgarian language and doctoral students – philologists. Respectively, before pandemic: 14 bachelors, 12 masters and 8 PhD students. And during pandemic: 14 bachelors, 12 masters and 8 PhD students. They complete a specially designed Google form with an assessment of the relevant skills decomposed for a given area. Data from before and after the pandemic are compared. Challenges and their solutions in practice are identified. Limitations of the analysis are set, resulting from the limited number of subjects.

- Keywords:novel “Under the Yoke”; “translation”; interpretation; literary education
- Summary/Abstract:The text approaches the so-called “translation” of the novel “Under the Yoke”, carried out by Mrs. N. Stefanova, as a kind of literary and cultural phenomenon. Our text researches the various approaches and techniques for “updating” the language of Vazov’s work, used by the “translator”, and asks about the socio-cultural conditions and about the motives for the initiation of the researched phenomenon and about its literary identity, which tends towards the grotesque – a kind of emanation of a literary illiteracy, normalized in our opinion by socially tolerated practices of literary education at school, against which scientific expertise seems, at least for now, powerless.

- Keywords:humorous texts; potential; attitudes; teachers; Russian language; secondary school
- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on the potential of humorous texts in secondary school Russian classes. We achieve this goal through the attitudes of teachers teaching the language, established by analyzing answers received from a large-scale survey, to which 238 people responded (36 from the city of Sofia and 202 from other cities and villages of the country). Based on the analysis of the results, the pedagogical and methodical potential of the humorous texts were highlighted. Apart from that, provoked by negative attitudes, we try to defend the thesis that humorous texts presented in the face of short humoristic pieces of text would “work” also at low levels of Russian language proficiency.

- Summary/Abstract:One of the tasks of the modern school is to adapt the educational process to the rapidly changing environment. The changes are based on the personality-oriented nature of the educational process, which is guaranteed by the continuous and well-organized pedagogical interaction with the students. Using an individual approach to learning, teachers are able to promote and develop students' communication skills. The modern reality and the current educational structure in teaching Bulgarian language impose the need to use different forms of work that allow students to develop in this direction. This creates conditions for motivated work with a practical focus, an innovative approach, which is extremely important for the development of students’ creativity. The report presents ideas for making interdisciplinary connections in a Bulgarian language class in the 5th grade. It aims to develop skills for planning, structuring, and writing of an independent student text. One of the innovative methods of learning and teaching that would help to develop key competencies of the student’s studying language is the use of mind maps. Along with this, the discovery and implementation of cross-curricular connections in specific lessons gives students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in an easier and affordable way. The idea of discovering connections between the Bulgarian language and mathematics using the Stomachion game is also interesting.

- Page Range:129-138
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:Cultural; sociocultural; social; sociolinguistic; communicative competence
- Summary/Abstract:The report aims to examine in detail the differential features between social, sociolinguistic, and sociocultural competence as components of communicative competence and to determine the place of cultural competence among them. Clarification of these correlates is necessary because of the variety of scientific statements that define them and create confusion about their semantics and the hierarchy between them. Communicative competence is the main goal of modern Bulgarian language education, and its practical implementation in the communicative act requires knowledge of the cultural specifics reflected in the language at different levels. This determines the place of cultural competence as its significant construct, which is in direct relation with its other components. Its identification as a meta-competency, as well as its purposeful formation and development, will lead to the desired result of the exit from the system - individuals possessing a rich value system and a high culture, who will be full-fledged citizens of modern society.

- Summary/Abstract:The ideas in the report are based on the manipulative potential for communication in the media sphere and on advertising strategies as an opportunity to form and master important skills that develop the communicative (in particular – strategic) competence of learners – analysis and synthesis of information from various sources in advance of a given communicative task, critical thinking, adaptability and creativity, experience in presenting and arguing ideas and beliefs, attracting, retaining and modeling the attention and opinion of the audience, striving for self-improvement, etc. Working on the set parameters has the capacity to limit some negative trends identified in the latest proposals for optimization the curricula from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The text shares the understanding that students' strategic competence needs to be built on the learners' thought and awareness of the broad spectrum of strategic behavior. It is important for adolescents to be able to successfully transfer strategic thinking patterns beyond the concrete framework of communication. Strategic thinking is an extremely important skill that could ensure perceived success in various life situations and, more importantly, be the stable foundation offering an alternative in the event of failure. These are the citizens that every society needs - solution-seeking and sustainable, sufficiently motivated and socially adequate, alert and creative individuals.
