Summary/Abstract: The text approaches the so-called “translation” of the novel “Under the Yoke”, carried out by Mrs. N. Stefanova, as a kind of literary and cultural phenomenon. Our text researches the various approaches and techniques for “updating” the language of Vazov’s work, used by the “translator”, and asks about the socio-cultural conditions and about the motives for the initiation of the researched phenomenon and about its literary identity, which tends towards the grotesque – a kind of emanation of a literary illiteracy, normalized in our opinion by socially tolerated practices of literary education at school, against which scientific expertise seems, at least for now, powerless.
