Summary/Abstract: The report deals with the question about assessment of literacy in international study – PiRLs’2006 – Progress in international Reading Literacy study – one of the largest international assessments of reading literacy. Reading literacy is defined as the ability to understand and use those written language forms required by society and/or valued by the individual. Young readers can construct meaning from variety of texts. They read to learn, to participate in communities of readers in school and everyday life, and for enjoyment. Bulgarian students together with students from Luxembourg, Italy, Hungary, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium (Flemish) and Denmark have higher achievement than the majority of other participants. Higher achievements of Bulgarian students in reading of fictional /nonfictional texts are explained and analyzed.
