Summary/Abstract: Tom Żeglując po świecie romańskim. Studia filologiczne, zadedykowany Profesorowi Jerzemu Brzozowskiemu z okazji 70. rocznicy urodzin, odwołuje się do Jego wieloletnich zainteresowań naukowych w zakresie szeroko pojętej romanistyki.

- Summary/Abstract:This article focuses on the novel A Vida no Ceu by José Eduardo Agualusa. Its aim is to analyze the book as a way to play with creativity, at the same time perceiving it as a comment addressing today´s issues. With references to the theory of António Cândido, according to whom fiction is always based on reality that it intends to transform, the purpose of the article is to find a similar attempt in the studied novel. At the end of the day, Agualusa’s work turns out to be an ecological manifesto with oneiric scenery, purely imagined. Obviously, the writer makes use of the fiction in order to share his appeal to preserve the environment.

- Summary/Abstract:The article considers the translation of the Pavlo Tychyna’s, one of the most interestingUkrainian poets of the 20th century, poem Мадоннo моя… into Polish. The analyzed translation was made by Józef Czechowicz – a Polish poet, writer and translator, who translated into Polish over twenty early poems by Tychyna. The authoress of the article was interested in recreating in the Polish variant the characteristic features of the Ukrainian poet’s work and the impact of the translator’s own work on translation. Particular attention was paid to reproducing the musical character of the original, as well as recreating its semantic and stylistic planes. The attention was paid to the changes and poetic transformations characteristic of the translator’s creative manner.

- Keywords:Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839–1908); Brazilian literature; translation; reception; Latin American boom
- Summary/Abstract:The paper focuses on the presence and critical reception of translations of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’ works in Poland. The study constitutes an attempt to reconstruct the course of the author’s legacy in the light of the main commentaries identified in the Polish press. It is found that in the critical discourse, composed of the peritexts (information in the book covers and afterwords) and paratexts (reviews), a coherent interpretative line associating the writer with a clearly psychologizing tendency is clearly identified. Similarly, it seems that the representatives of the Polish literary system ignore the ironic dimension of the author’s work, taking it too literally.

- Keywords:transfer of a movie title; translating movie title; techniques of dealing with a movie title; L’auberge espagnole; Les Poupées russes; Casse-tête chinois; Smak życia
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents a detailed method of evaluating the interlingual transfer of titles, which comprises the analysis of the source title (its phonetic and graphic form; relationto the source text; meaning; as well as style and function), the analysis of the target title (aspects listed as above), understanding and assessing (which) technique of dealing with the title was used by the author. This method is applied to the titles of a popular French film by C. Klapisch, L’auberge espagnole (2002) and its sequels Les Poupees russes (2005) and Casse-tete chinois (2013). Distributors in different countries (Poland, English-speaking as well as Spanish-speaking countries) have used various techniques, with the predominance of substituting the source title by another one of a similar function. The examples taken into consideration clearly show that during the transfer of the movie title – besides the linguistic or cultural considerations – the marketing reasons have played an important role. Changing the title is often justified, even though the new one does not always work well.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of the present study is related to the last phase of a project which main objective was to describe the current situation of the Portuguese language in Cape Verde in general and, in particular, on the island of Săo Vicente, based on a series of 133 semi-structured interviews with its inhabitants. Additionally, in this last phase, opinions were collected from 5 Cape Verdean informants, residents of the city of Lisbon, on the linguistic situation in their country of origin and on the language choices they make in their daily lives in the Portuguese capital. The purpose of this part was to verify, applying the premises of a case study, if and how changes the relationship with the Portuguese language in emigration. As an introduction, the text contains a brief description of the socio-historical context of Cape Verdean immigration in Portugal, paying special attention to the city of Lisbon.

- Keywords:diminutive; augmentative; Portuguese; Polish; José Saramago; translation
- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims to analyse and compare the so-called evaluative formations, namely, diminutives and augmentatives, in Portuguese and Polish. Four José Saramago’s novels (Memorial do convento, A jangada de pedra, Todos os nomes, Ensaio sobre a lucidez) and their direct translations into Polish (Baltazar i Blimunda, Kamienna tratwa, Wszystkie imiona, Miasto białych kart) have been selected as research material. Three types of evaluative formations have been excerpted from all texts: synthetic, analytic and mixed ones. The analysis of the material consists in collecting numerical data in tables, defining several variables and elaborating illustrative statistics. Based on this data some conclusions are made: 1) the frequency of use of diminutives is higher in Polish translations than in Portuguese originals, while the frequency of use of augmentatives oscillates between similar values in both languages; 2) in both Portuguese and Polish predominate synthetic diminutives and analytic augmentatives; 3) the frequency of evaluative formations in Portuguese and Polish texts can suggest the translation strategy adopted by the translator: the formal equivalence in case of Wojciech Charchalis and the dynamic equivalence in case of Elżbieta Milewska.

- Summary/Abstract:The subject of this study is literary censorship in Portugal up to 1640. The text presents the state of research and then, drawing on the work of Portuguese scholars [e.g., Fonseca 2019; Martin 2005], takes a closer look at issues related to the ‘birth of the book’ in print in Portugal and the institutionalisation of modern censorship. The focus is shifted then towards the three-part censorship scheme that remained in force in Portugal until 1768, when it was replaced by the Real Mesa Censória. Finally, examples of censorship provisions contained in approvals are presented. The examples discussed are taken from the works of Camőes, among others.

- Summary/Abstract:When hearing the name “Clarice Lispector”, what immediately comes to the mind of a person familiar with who she was or with her works is “short story writer” or “novelist”. The word “translator” is not usually mentioned in the same sentence. Although this profession was not Lispector’s primary vocation, it certainly occupied an important place in her career, since it allowed her to sustain herself. At the same time, engaging in translation undoubtedly helped Lispector become a more critical reader of her pieces that had been translated into other languages. Bearing in mind the fact that Lispector has long been considered a challenge to translators, it is essential to take a closer look at how she approached the texts she was translating. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to shed light on Clarice Lispector as a translator, which will be done by analyzing the piece “Traduzir procurando năo trair” or To Translate but Not to Betray (translated by the author), published in Outros escritos (2005). All in all, I hope to highlight the importance of translation in Lispector’s career and how it can relate to the challenges her translators have been facing for decades.

- Keywords:Mafalda; comic strip; unconventional metaphor; superheroine; metaphors we live by
- Summary/Abstract:This article proposes reading the meanings contained in the series of Mafalda comic strips through the unconventional metaphor “Mafalda is a superheroine”. The interpretative methodology was based on the concept of unconventional metaphor as presented by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. Such a metaphor is built of overlapping implications. For the selected case of Mafalda, the implications arose from a typology of female superheroes outlined on three different levels: the modern superheroine by Lorraine Cink, the “cover” superheroine by Louise Simonson, and the historically changing superheroine by Mike Madrid.

- Keywords:contemporary novel; travel literature; intertextualism; intercultural dialogue; Luís Vaz de Camões
- Summary/Abstract:The novel Os Naufragios de Camoes (2016) is about the story of life and work of Camőes and another counter-epic, a contract metafictional literary work, intertextual, dialogic and post-modern. A dialogue is contrived with the legacy of the history of Portugal, Camőes, and The Orient and the herd of protagonists, being Mário Cláudio one of them. We witness a novel of the so-called “return of caravels”, in which the contemporary Author disputes the cultural, historic and biographical meaning of The Lusiads (Os Lusiadas 1572) and of the myth of the epic Poet’s life, within his present quality of the master of anti-colonial literature, followed by some other Portuguese writers. The antique heroes of The Overseas: kings, navigators, writers and adventurers come back hurt badly and dispirited to the former homeland; the epic poem by Luís de Camőes is only a someone else´s invention. The fiction surpasses history and research. The novel in focus incorporates various intertextual and counter-ideological games.

- Summary/Abstract:The contemporary Colombian literature is dominated by the realistic fiction, and within it, its political and social genre; the novel on violence being its most significant sub-genre. The article outlines the history of a country ravaged by internal conflicts since 1945 and therefore distinguishes four types of prosaic texts about violence: novel on violence provoked by traditional political parties, narco-novel (with its televised version), guerrilla novel and the accounts of kidnapped people. Simultaneously, it considers the ways in which the aforementioned texts depict and analyze the political and social situation in Colombia, in order to define their contribution towards constructing a collective memory and the type of value systems they propose.

- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Philology
- Page Range:261-280
- No. of Pages:20
- Keywords:Constantine P. Kavafy; Ιθακη; Polish translations
- Summary/Abstract:The poem Ιθακη (1911) is one of the most translated texts by Constantine P. Kavafy. Its Polish translations form a twelve-part collection by six translators. A chronological comparison shows that the translations differ, among other, by the means used to translate the first word of the source text – the conjunction σα – which can be used in the temporal or (more rarely) the conditional sense. The earlier versions explore the latter option, while the most recent translations – created after the year 2000 – adapt the former, temporal and iterative one. The difference can be meaningful for the interpretation of the whole poem. In the article’s conclusions the possible reasons for that change are debated.

- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:pure cinema; Germaine Dulac; Charles Baudelaire; intersemiotic translation;figures of translation
- Summary/Abstract:The representatives of the French avant-garde, Germaine Dulac included, believed that the cinematography of their time was overly restricted by the rules of the narrative, making film a slavish ‘sub-genre’ of literature. Film had to free itself from these restrictions. For Dulac, the way to achieve this was ‘pure cinema’ – visualisation of thoughts, emotions and dreams. Seeking to break free from the shackles of the narrative, her experimental cinema turned to poetry as a new source of inspiration; she ‘was indebted to 19th-century Symbolist and Decadent poets’ [McCabe 2005: 8], but the only film by Dulac that can be considered an actual adaptation of a poem is L’Invitation au voyage, a short silent film released in 1927. If Dulac’s cinema aimed to “get rid of all narrative”, i.e. linguistic restrictions, would it be an exaggeration to call Dulac’s film an “adaptation” or even an intersemiotic “translation” of Baudelaire’s poem? And if not, what are the intersemiotic “translation strategies” or “figures of translation” that we can distinguish in the images composed by Dulac? In this article, we shall demonstrate the functioning of Jerzy Brzozowski’s translational tool by analysing three choices made by Dulac in the face of challenges posed to potential translators or adapters by the famous Baudelairean work.

- Keywords:literary translation; personal pronoun “on”; Annie Ernaux; autobiography
- Summary/Abstract:The article is focused on the problem of translating the French personal pronoun “on” on the example of the Polish version of Les annees by Annie Ernaux. In her most famous work, the Nobel Prize winner creates a coherent project that is both a personal memory and a biography of a generation. He deliberately refuses the first-person singular in favor of the plural, the pronouns “elle” (she) and “elles” (they in feminine), and “he”. The article aims to analyze the Polish translation by Krzysztof Jarosz and Magdalena Budzińska (Czarne 2022). The translators’ strategy as well as the problems that appeared in the Polish translation were presented, including the issue of the lack of an equivalent pronoun in Polish for the French “on” and the difficulties of translation and editorial choices related to the need to care for style while maintaining the author’s concept.

- Summary/Abstract:Born in 1925, Dalton Trevisan is one of the best Brazilian novelists. Written sincethe 60s, and especially appreciated by literary critics, his short stories (characterizedby a gradual condensation and simplification) occupy a distinct place in his work.Published in 2005 among other short stories of the anthology Rita Ritinha Ritona, the analyzed text verses the theme of female street prostitution, inscribed into thetopic of urban violence, exclusion, and unequal gender relations. The aim of this paper is to show ways in which the author tries to manipulate theopacity of female prostitute’s image, an ambiguous and symbolic figure who carrieswith itself several cultural tabus. He chooses two main strategies to do so: exploringthe polysemic potential of word, as well as weaving intertextual relations. Theobtained representation moves the center of gravity from fascination of inscrutablefemininity towards ascertainments about the viewer, representing the male gaze, with all its defects and limitations.

- Summary/Abstract:The analyzed text, despite its short length (just slightly over 300 in-12° pages), iscomposed of samples of several genres popular in the first quarter of the 18th century. It doesn’t form a coherent unity from the point of view of romance conventions. Similarstrategies of “disturbed” narrations were described by Jean-Paul Sermain in hiswork on metafictions: short prosaic texts paradoxically concentrated on revealingtheir own conventionality, against the habits of building the illusion through narration.Les Femmes militaires, relation historique d’une île nouvellement découverte, enrichiede figures. Dédié à Monseigneur le Chevalier d’Orléans. Par le C.D***, presentsa multi-levelexoticism – in the referential and aesthetic meaning. The narrator’ssailing to the titular island takes over ten months and is (fortunately) uneventful, asif the island was 110 thousand kilometres away from England – which is an obviouswink at the reader. A patchwork, pastiche, or maybe an anti-romance pamphlet? What could result from these aesthetic choices, back then as well as nowadays, constitutesa question which Louis Rustaing de Saint-Jory’s work forces us to pose.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this article is to analyse the depiction of the character of a prostitutein the novel by Mário de Andrade, Amar, Verbo Intransitivo (1927), one of the mainworks of Brazilian modernism. The central question that we consider is if the authorembraced the deep-rooted stereotypes connected to this type of profession or ifhe attributed new characteristics to the prostitute according to his aesthetic andideology. The atypical working environment and German origin of the prostituteopen an array of her various roles in the novel. These include: sexually initiate theclient, educate the children in the family, take care of the household and illustratecriticism of bourgeoisie. On the other hand, the character exposed to the Pirandelliannarrator represents the maximal manifestation of Expressionism in the novel.
