Summary/Abstract: This article proposes reading the meanings contained in the series of Mafalda comic strips through the unconventional metaphor “Mafalda is a superheroine”. The interpretative methodology was based on the concept of unconventional metaphor as presented by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. Such a metaphor is built of overlapping implications. For the selected case of Mafalda, the implications arose from a typology of female superheroes outlined on three different levels: the modern superheroine by Lorraine Cink, the “cover” superheroine by Louise Simonson, and the historically changing superheroine by Mike Madrid.
