Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the presence and critical reception of translations of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’ works in Poland. The study constitutes an attempt to reconstruct the course of the author’s legacy in the light of the main commentaries identified in the Polish press. It is found that in the critical discourse, composed of the peritexts (information in the book covers and afterwords) and paratexts (reviews), a coherent interpretative line associating the writer with a clearly psychologizing tendency is clearly identified. Similarly, it seems that the representatives of the Polish literary system ignore the ironic dimension of the author’s work, taking it too literally.
