Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyse the depiction of the character of a prostitutein the novel by Mário de Andrade, Amar, Verbo Intransitivo (1927), one of the mainworks of Brazilian modernism. The central question that we consider is if the authorembraced the deep-rooted stereotypes connected to this type of profession or ifhe attributed new characteristics to the prostitute according to his aesthetic andideology. The atypical working environment and German origin of the prostituteopen an array of her various roles in the novel. These include: sexually initiate theclient, educate the children in the family, take care of the household and illustratecriticism of bourgeoisie. On the other hand, the character exposed to the Pirandelliannarrator represents the maximal manifestation of Expressionism in the novel.
