Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the problem of translating the French personal pronoun “on” on the example of the Polish version of Les annees by Annie Ernaux. In her most famous work, the Nobel Prize winner creates a coherent project that is both a personal memory and a biography of a generation. He deliberately refuses the first-person singular in favor of the plural, the pronouns “elle” (she) and “elles” (they in feminine), and “he”. The article aims to analyze the Polish translation by Krzysztof Jarosz and Magdalena Budzińska (Czarne 2022). The translators’ strategy as well as the problems that appeared in the Polish translation were presented, including the issue of the lack of an equivalent pronoun in Polish for the French “on” and the difficulties of translation and editorial choices related to the need to care for style while maintaining the author’s concept.
