Summary/Abstract: The contemporary Colombian literature is dominated by the realistic fiction, and within it, its political and social genre; the novel on violence being its most significant sub-genre. The article outlines the history of a country ravaged by internal conflicts since 1945 and therefore distinguishes four types of prosaic texts about violence: novel on violence provoked by traditional political parties, narco-novel (with its televised version), guerrilla novel and the accounts of kidnapped people. Simultaneously, it considers the ways in which the aforementioned texts depict and analyze the political and social situation in Colombia, in order to define their contribution towards constructing a collective memory and the type of value systems they propose.
