Summary/Abstract: The subject of this study is literary censorship in Portugal up to 1640. The text presents the state of research and then, drawing on the work of Portuguese scholars [e.g., Fonseca 2019; Martin 2005], takes a closer look at issues related to the ‘birth of the book’ in print in Portugal and the institutionalisation of modern censorship. The focus is shifted then towards the three-part censorship scheme that remained in force in Portugal until 1768, when it was replaced by the Real Mesa Censória. Finally, examples of censorship provisions contained in approvals are presented. The examples discussed are taken from the works of Camőes, among others.
