- Summary/Abstract:This paper systematizes and analyzes errors in the learning of aorist forms by Serbian-speaking students. Despite the formal analogy in the systems of past verb tenses in Serbian and Bulgarian (aorist, imperfect, perfect, plusquamperfect), even at the beginning of the Bulgarian language training for Serbian students aorist forms create many difficulties. Mistakes made by advanced students are the motivation for this research.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper discusses the role of mnemonic techniques and visual art in teaching Bulgarian as a foreign language. I present mnemonic techniques that can facilitate the three fundamental stages of memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval of, in our case, new lexical and grammatical information. These techniques are based on associations and correlations between familiar objects from Van Gogh's painting Bedroom in Arles and grammar rules in Bulgarian. Van Gogh's painting is seen as a visual illustration of the ancient Greek mnemonic model, known as Memory Palace, used to enhance both the coding and recovery of new information.

- Summary/Abstract:This article capitalises on the Italian students experience with studying Bulgarian at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”. It places a special emphasis on an approach focusing on the syntactic features of the Bulgarian language: sentence structure, types of sentences, word order. This knowledge and the associated skills in constructing grammatically correct expressions give language learners the freedom and confidence to express themselves using increasingly complex phrases and verbalizing their communicative intent in ever greater detail. Studying the syntactic features of a foreign language leads masterying morphological, morphosyntactic and lexical phenomena in the context of specific speech acts.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper analyzes the challenges and opportunities of teaching Bulgarian by emphasizing the important role of both the teacher’s and the student’s native language. First, it is important that Italian student are facilitated in their first contact with Bulgarian given that the latter is radically different from Italian, first and foremost in its writing system. In addition, the lack of appropriate teaching materials in Italian makes the student's assimilation of Bulgarian complex. Given these premises, the role of the native-Italian-speaker professor assumes particular relevance as s/he is aware of the complexities and challenges that the Bulgarian language presents to Italian students.

- Summary/Abstract:The object of this analysis are several Bulgarian folk tales, with a focus on the characters’ functions, poetics as wel las encoded archaic believes and rituals. Special attention is paid to the male and female initiation in Bulgarian fairy tales. The article comments on the peculiarities of teaching Bulgarian fairy tales in a German-speaking environment, offers a bibliography with translations and scientific literature in German. Namely, it shows that these fairy tales’ plot is based on the ritual of initiation into adulthood described in W. Prop’s Historical Roots of a Magic Tale (1946) and D. Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).

- Summary/Abstract:The “Faculty of Russian Language and Literature and Slavic Studies” of the University of Athens has been organizing annual competitions in Bulgarian Studies for its students on the lecturer in Bulgarian language, literature and culture’s intiative for the past seven years (since the academic year 2015/2016). These annual competitions are held with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria, the financial support of Eurobank, and in cooperation with the universities of Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv. Also, it corresponds with May 24 – the Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature, and in its latest editions it is dedicated to important anniversaries. This paper briefly presents the history and concept of the competition and the perspectives that this initiative opened for the development of Bulgarian studies in Greece. Special attention is paid to the contest entitled “Greece in Bulgarian literature”, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents an interesting example of European spiritual unity. In an effort to present the Bulgarian revolution as part of the common European process of nation-building, Botev took a bold step – he repeated the feat of the Italian revolutionary Carlo Pisacane to convince the European public of the Bulgarian cause’s the rightfulness. Repeating Pisacane’s familiar actions, Botev naturally joined the list of martyrs who died for national self-determination and, thus, managed to show that the Bulgarian national revolution is an integral part of the overall European process.

- Summary/Abstract:The article raises the issue of the relationship between the sincerity of the speaker and the veracity of the message. The analysis of the results of a survey shows that expressions of sincerity with high standartization and frequency allow respondents to recognize the intention of the speaker, to assess the relevance of his thought and the content of the speech, but to varying degrees. Often these expressions engage more with functions such as expressing the speaker's emotion.

The respondents’ answers allow to infer the rules to which Bulgarian language community today attaches paramount importance. The demographic factors that clearly influence the respondents’ opinions are also indicated. The analysis of the answers in relation to the demographic variables that determine opinions provides valuable guidelines for the codification of decision-making in relation to innovations in the field of grammatical norm.

- Summary/Abstract:Two tests are presented here: (i) to determine whether the root-final [ǝ] (letter ъ) in obstruent-sonorant clusters (OS) is alternating with zero or not and (ii) if alternating, whether [ǝ] is an epenthetic vowel or a vocalized synchronic yer. At the same time, different root types are identified, and a possible explanation of yer vocalization in phonological terms has been proposed: yers vocalize to the left or to the right of unsyllabified consonants. Epenthesis occurs in OS clusters in all cases where it is impossible to prove the presence of underlying yer. Word formation with yer suffixes attached to these roots, gives raise to very intricate phonological patterns of vowel-zero alternations.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper examines the translation approaches in the conveyance of proper names from/into Bulgarian and Czech. The purpose is to identify the most specific cases, which could mislead or impede the translator. Taking into account the onymic diversity, the attention is focused on particular types of anthroponyms and toponyms. The starting point for analysis is the distinction between home and foreign proprial units. In a addition, not only the lexical-grammatical features of the considered onymic systems are compared, but also the discursive parameters (formality, expressiveness) are taken into account.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper presents the visual images of Bulgaria conveyed by two Hungarian books that have not been translated into Bulgarian (Ecsedi I. “A bolgárok földjén utirajzok”, 1929; Szilády Zoltán „Bulgária“, 1931). They illustrate the multiplicity of Bulgarian worlds, the ethnic and cultural specifics of individual regions, the everyday life, the elements of traditional society and nascent modernity. In this way the visual narrative for Bulgaria becomes more and more multifaceted and richer.

- Summary/Abstract:The spread of Bulgarian language in Hungary is quite heterogeneous. Lives embracing both cultures allows people to come in contact with human differences in a way that adds value to their existence in the world. Although ethnic Bulgarians are presently the smallest foreign diasporas in Hungary, our population has been relatively distinct as an expatriate community. The corner stone of this distinction is the mother tongue held among Bulgarian community as a celebration of their identity and a bridge to national consciousness. This native language keeps historic memory, social and cultural values of ethnic importance alive, which turns it into a distinct space where communal spirit flows into physical existence. The paper deals with the changes coming to Bulgarian language in contact with Hungarian, as observed among Bulgarian ethnic community in Hungary, touching on the issues of identity and national consciousness in the global world of present day.

- Summary/Abstract:In the text I analyze the linguistic situation in the Gora region in the Western Balkans. Today, most of it is in Kosovo (18 villages), 9 points are in Albania and three – in North Macedonia. The mother tongue of the compact local, late Islamized Slavic population is Bulgarian. The phenomenon of “hidden minorities” in totalitarian Yugoslavia also reflects on the social and linguistic behavior of the members of the minority community, which has learned to mimic in order to survive. They call themselves nashinci ‘our people’ and their language nash ‘ours’.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper addresses retrospectively a key moment in the history of inter-ethnic relations in Bulgaria: the beginning of the post-socialist period (1990 – 1991) and the emergence of the political party Ataka and its unpredictable demise (2005 – 2007). By adopting a historicist approach to politics that credits past events with helping the interpretation of the present, Bulgarian elites’ successes in containing inter-ethnic tensions may provide guidelines for liberal democracies trying to overcome a recrudescence of similar sentiments. Namely, mainstream parties persuaded potential voters that they can deliver on (some of the) nationalists’ promises better and faster. Eventually, democracy has survived and Bulgarian liberalism has swallowed its adversaries. Perhaps, Western parties could learn from the Bulgarian party system’s two successful attempt at democratically and peacefully containing ethnic tensions despite a fraught history and a contested present.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper examines so-called “alternative tourism” by focusing on some Bulgarian good practices. The paper reviews the country’s most popular and distinctive destinations for this type of tourism: ski and mountain tourism, cultural tourism and agrotourism. It also highlights some of the problems related to underdeveloped regions from which many residents emigrate due to of public investments. There is also mention of ongoing projects and measures that are either being taken or could be taken to support alternative tourism in those areas. Clearly, the aim is to revitalize those peripheral, less-developed areas by emphasising their attractivity and, thus, turning marginalised and border regions into alternative tourist destinations.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines historically the emergence and development of the so-called Macedonian question/s, which appear/s to have multiple dimensions and should not be viewed as contiguous single problem or issue. Obviously, this is a complex matter that must be addressed from different points of view. However, it is unlikely that we will find a solution ourselves, even if we read every book that has been written about the/se issue/s. We deem an approach to this issue adequate for the purpose of examining the reasons behind the behaviour of each of Macedonia’s neighbours separately (Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Albania, etc.) as opposed to their interests. Perhaps, these issues will remain forever unresolved until all participants accept any solution without “complaints”.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims at examining the Bulgarian possessive pronouns to highlight the difficulties faced by the students from the Faculty of Russian Philology and Slavic Studies at the University of Athens. For this purpose, comparisons are made regarding the formation and use of this grammatical category in Greek, Russian and Bulgarian. - Summary/Abstract:The paper presents a research on the perception of Modern Greek poetry in Bulgaria. The research is based on the analysis of Modern Greek poetry anthologies (5 in number), published in Bulgaria in the period between 1960 and 1998. The analysis of the historical framework for each anthology publication offers a most interesting insight into the issue in question. It shows that not only that the historical period influences the content of the anthologies, but also predetermines its interpretation by the readers. Examples of such influence include anything from deliberate exclusion of some of the most prominent Modern Greek poets from the in question publications, to a „controlled“, and in some cases biased representation of the included poets by the compilers of the anthologies. The names of Stefan Gechev and Bozhidar Bozhilov are present in each of the analyzed anthologies.
