Summary/Abstract: Two tests are presented here: (i) to determine whether the root-final [ǝ] (letter ъ) in obstruent-sonorant clusters (OS) is alternating with zero or not and (ii) if alternating, whether [ǝ] is an epenthetic vowel or a vocalized synchronic yer. At the same time, different root types are identified, and a possible explanation of yer vocalization in phonological terms has been proposed: yers vocalize to the left or to the right of unsyllabified consonants. Epenthesis occurs in OS clusters in all cases where it is impossible to prove the presence of underlying yer. Word formation with yer suffixes attached to these roots, gives raise to very intricate phonological patterns of vowel-zero alternations.
