Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the challenges and opportunities of teaching Bulgarian by emphasizing the important role of both the teacher’s and the student’s native language. First, it is important that Italian student are facilitated in their first contact with Bulgarian given that the latter is radically different from Italian, first and foremost in its writing system. In addition, the lack of appropriate teaching materials in Italian makes the student's assimilation of Bulgarian complex. Given these premises, the role of the native-Italian-speaker professor assumes particular relevance as s/he is aware of the complexities and challenges that the Bulgarian language presents to Italian students.
