Summary/Abstract: The object of this analysis are several Bulgarian folk tales, with a focus on the characters’ functions, poetics as wel las encoded archaic believes and rituals. Special attention is paid to the male and female initiation in Bulgarian fairy tales. The article comments on the peculiarities of teaching Bulgarian fairy tales in a German-speaking environment, offers a bibliography with translations and scientific literature in German. Namely, it shows that these fairy tales’ plot is based on the ritual of initiation into adulthood described in W. Prop’s Historical Roots of a Magic Tale (1946) and D. Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).
