- Summary/Abstract:Digital media are changing the very structure of society and, perhaps most importantly, the way people interact, which affects their choices, preferences, social and professional fulfillment, values, and even social and personal destiny. The presence of each individual in a (social) network in the conditions of modern political, moral, economic, etc. reality could become an important condition for a person’s meaningful stay in society today, even for their social destiny. The same applies to web-based or digital communication, which takes up more and more time in people’s lives and is becoming one of the main ways of social interaction. These problems are important, as they are also related to the tasks of education or training in media professions, which must necessarily include courses in ethics. The article examines the question of whether ethics in web-based and digitized communication activity can possibly justify a normative moral regulatory system that is necessary for the contemporary media environment.

Predicting the trend of technological invasion of the media ecosystem and answering the question of the boundaries between biology and technology are becoming increasingly urgent. The “convergence” between man and machine will certainly have a profound impact on the media ecosystem, media culture, and journalism.

- Summary/Abstract:The Messenger effect shows that a key role in the process of media influence has not only the subject and the topic of the message, but also the personality of the communicator. The audience relies on the already established trust, authority, and approval of a given person, and this affects the way they perceive, interpret, and use the received information. Audience tends to place greater expectation and importance on information that is presented by the authoritative, influential, competent, and charismatic messengers. However, the credible sources of information manage to achieve greater changes in the recipients’ attitudes, unlike less credible sources. Media influence also depends on other factors such as the possession of special knowledge by the communicator, the built public trust in his personality, the self-esteem of the recipients, and their preestablished attitudes.

- Summary/Abstract:This article aims to look at the phenomenon of media change from abroad historical perspective. In order to better understand the genesis of current phenomenasuch as digitization and network-based communication, it is suggested to draw on Fernand Braudel’s concept of the longue durée. This way, the current media change can be viewed and understood as a longer-term change in media structures. Late modern change is therefore not understood exclusively as a technically induced further development of what is known or, on the contrary, as a loss or decline, but as a historical process with continuities and breaks extending into the pre-modern era.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines the theoretical understanding of the need to model plain language (PL), providing accessible communication. The problems on which the researchers are working are presented: the essence and peculiarities of PL, its status in the context of other language variants. Principles for adapting speech in PL are outlined, and their application to writing guides produced by media and news agencies is discussed. A review of general audience writing guidelines in two public electronic media and one news agency shows that partially described internal standards for accessible communication are in practice. However, there is a lack of a consistent and unified description of strategies for making the language accessible to a wide audience. Therefore, the modeling of PL and the preparation of descriptions and guidelines for the implementation of this language variety can, on the one hand, benefit from the results in the research of conversational and oral communication, and on the other hand, regulate the efforts to achieve accessible communication of the institutions and the media with citizens. The article covers the intersection of key issues related to media freedom and judicial independence: the European monitoring of Bulgaria’s judicial reform; data from a representative national survey among journalists who directly link self-censorship to the threat of legal prosecution; Bulgarian SLAPP cases and the transposition of the new European directive to limit judicial harassment against those exercising freedom of expression. The current aspects of the topic lead to two main conclusions: the need to update the legislative framework and the need for greater quality in the administration of justice.

The research topic is the dynamics of book production, measured mainly by its quantitative indicators, print run, and number of published titles. The methodology is based on comparative analysis, examination of empirical data, an academic publications survey, and secondary analysis of sociological studies.

- Keywords:active audience; civic-active users; fake news; network; sources of information; user-generated content
- Summary/Abstract:The new type of communication on social networks enables a new role for citizens in a democratic society – from passive observers, they become active participants in the process of creating news. The trend has been observed in the Bulgarian media for years. In order to explore the role of proactive users in the production of news content, as well as the way in which journalistic editorial offices in our country receive them, a series of in-depth interviews with representatives of the guild were conducted. The experience of experts shows that forms of participatory journalism enable proximity to the audience and offer interesting stories that affect a wide range of society. However, they also carry risks for spreading false information. Fake news, misinformation, and disinformation are the real risks journalists face when they include user-generated content. That’s why investment in new skills and tools to verify information is needed.

- Summary/Abstract:Information (communication) versus narrative? New media and social networks present us with a completely new type of narrative, significantly different from classic news, reports, and comments. They contaminate in a specific, previously unknown way information – analysis – story (narrative) within a single text, provoking a new type of communicative situation. This shifts the emphasis from the classic media text, which strives for the most objective recreation of ontological facts, to specific reflexive narratives, which in turn form new, specific genre forms. Today, we are witnessing yet another, and undoubtedly the most radical and dynamic genre diversification in the history of media.

- Keywords:Blurb; Annotation; Postmodern pastiche; Advertising discourse; Blurbification; Media genres; Genre contamination
- Summary/Abstract:The study explores the origin and theory of the blurb, motivated by theprevailing understanding in Bulgaria that the blurb, if known at all, is a synonym for annotation. The hypothesis that the blurb does not duplicate the annotation, but representsa distinct phenomenon, is proven. The blurb has a specific discursive function that the annotation cannot fulfill due to its normative nature and cultural and historical particularities. The necessity of this research is also linked to contradictory definitions of the blurbin Anglo-Saxon literature. Through historical, theoretical, and discursive analysis, the study examines the blurb’s nature as a genre, media, and cultural phenomenon. It proposes theories such as the blurb as postmodern pastiche, its adaptability to new communicative models, and the process of blurbification as contamination of traditional journalistic genres by advertising discourse.

- Keywords:Bulgarian National Revival; capitalism; financing; first Bulgarian; media; typology
- Summary/Abstract:The funding of media, the transparency of media ownership are directly related to the characteristics of society. The historical perspective on Bulgarian soil outlines typological manifestations of this linkage. During the Bulgarian National Revival, periodicals participated in the process of restoration of Bulgarian statehood. This is one explanation for the dominant characteristics of funding of the 107 periodicals at the time, which began their life in 1842: the dedicated financing with personal funds by journalists, who were among the leaders of the National Revival processes, the public financing by sponsors, and by civic organizations. Modern forms such as joint-stock companies also emerged. The main income was from subscriptions – often irregularly paid. During the first Bulgarian capitalism, considered up to September 9, 1944, the financing of the Bulgarian media emerged mainly in the following directions: by the state; by the parties; through for-profit newspaper enterprises; public financing through civic structures; personal funds; foreign sources (rare during the National Revival, more frequent afterward, especially in periods of crises). Processes of capital accumulation, typical of capitalism, also manifested themselves in the field of media, linking them to powerful financial flows. In contrast to the National Revival, after 1878, as modernization processes unfolded, profits from subscriptions, circulation, and advertising increased. In the period under research, we are talking about over 10,270 periodicals, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, the radio in Bulgaria.
