Summary/Abstract: The examined area is book publishing in Bulgaria after the events on November 10th, 1989, which marked the start of a long-lasting radical political and economic change, known as “The Transition”. The paper aims to discover the trends and the structure of Bulgarian book publishing during this period, and to propose a periodization of its development over the last 35 years. To reach this goal, the article presents the official data of book publishing, lays out periodisation criteria, and examines the internal and external factors that impacted the Bulgarian media environment. It investigates those processes in Bulgarian book publishing that were specific to the Transition period. The study does not cover the entire typological spectrum of book production in Bulgaria. The research topic is the dynamics of book production, measured mainly by its quantitative indicators, print run, and number of published titles. The methodology is based on comparative analysis, examination of empirical data, an academic publications survey, and secondary analysis of sociological studies.
