Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the hesitation of the Bulgarians about which societal model to follow: Russian or Western. The preference for Russia among some contemporary Bulgarians has been explained by the role of the Russian Empire in the emancipation of the Bulgarian lands from the Ottoman Empire, nostalgia toward socialism and the Soviet Union, and cultural similarity with Russia as the core country of the Orthodox civilization, respectively, cultural distance of Bulgaria from the West.
