Summary/Abstract: This article aims to look at the phenomenon of media change from abroad historical perspective. In order to better understand the genesis of current phenomenasuch as digitization and network-based communication, it is suggested to draw on Fernand Braudel’s concept of the longue durée. This way, the current media change can be viewed and understood as a longer-term change in media structures. Late modern change is therefore not understood exclusively as a technically induced further development of what is known or, on the contrary, as a loss or decline, but as a historical process with continuities and breaks extending into the pre-modern era.
