Summary/Abstract: The new type of communication on social networks enables a new role for citizens in a democratic society – from passive observers, they become active participants in the process of creating news. The trend has been observed in the Bulgarian media for years. In order to explore the role of proactive users in the production of news content, as well as the way in which journalistic editorial offices in our country receive them, a series of in-depth interviews with representatives of the guild were conducted. The experience of experts shows that forms of participatory journalism enable proximity to the audience and offer interesting stories that affect a wide range of society. However, they also carry risks for spreading false information. Fake news, misinformation, and disinformation are the real risks journalists face when they include user-generated content. That’s why investment in new skills and tools to verify information is needed.
