Summary/Abstract: The present volume hosts, in its pages, a series of studies signed by various researchers—clerical and lay—representing different denominations, to whom we express our gratitude both for the novelty of their historiographical approach and for the substance of their contributions. Between the covers of this tome are represented Roman Catholics, Greek Catholics, Armenian Catholics, Serbian Orthodox, Evangelical Lutherans, Baptists, and Evangelicals, belonging to several nationalities and speaking multiple languages, addressing different historical periods, beginning with the High Middle Ages and concluding with the modern and contemporary era. Among the present-day territories of Romania, the best represented—through the contributions included—are Banat and Transylvania, with studies of ecclesiastical history and materials dedicated to figures belonging to the clergy of these regions, but also Moldavia and the People’s Republic of Romania. In terms of distribution, seven studies focus on individuals, one on dualist sects, one on settlements as places of authentication, and one on monastic establishments.

- Summary/Abstract:The heretical movements are one of the most prolific chapters of the history of Christianity, a history often marked by informational deficiencies, but also by fascinating testimonies of ways to solve dogmatic dilemmas. As in the case of other heresies, in the case of Paulicianism too, historical research can not provide us irrefutable evidence of doctrinal-historical evolution or a framework that would fully circumscribe the religious views of this community. Consequently, this article tries not so much to offer, as much to search, an answer to the issue of uniqueness or plurality of heretical currents called Paulicianism.

- Summary/Abstract:Saxon conversion to Catholicism was not a mass phenomenon in the eighteenth century. The converted Saxon was marginalized and stereotypised by his contemporanies, meanwhile he was deemed as opportunist and betrayor of the Saxon nation. Johann Drauth represents a „perfect” analysis case, which highlights the limits of the oportunistic theory: By applying the cultural anthropological model of analysis and researching more the context than the reasons, this study explains how the contact with a different cultural confession brought about comunication and eventualy conversion and afterwards a typical Catholic behavior.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper briefly explores the conditions of Romanian Baptist believers after the Great Unification of 1918. The main focus is on the persecution suffered by the Baptist community due to the actions undertaken by the State in Collaboration with the Orthodox Church in the ‘20s. After a short discussion regarding the ideological reasons of the religious persecution directed to different Christian denominations labeled as ‘sects’, the paper brings into attention different aspects of the opression endured by Baptist believers, but also aspects regarding their resistance, especially to the so called “missionary work” of the Orthodox clergy. In the end, the author emphasizes that one of the fundamental values of Baptist believers is religious freedom, which the State should grant to all its citizens.

- Summary/Abstract:The Christian Baptist Church in Romania got involved in the life of the “city” ever since 1856,when the first German Baptist Church in the Romanian Old Kingdom was formed in Bucharest. It evolved gradually, became better organized and got involved in community life. At the same time, it had to face opposition from governing authorities and the official Church. Among the measures taken against the Baptist Church after 1939, mainly between 1940 and 1943 there was a resolution seeking the believers’ deportation to Bug, and decisions to outlaw and arrest the pastors and to close and requisition the chapels. 23 August 1944 brought along a wave of unexpected freedom in the life of the Baptist community. The aim of the present article is to point out that inspite of the aforementioned issues, during 1938-1947 the Baptist Church switched from being a marginalized community to being put on an equal footing with the other religious cults.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper is analyzing the canonical and sacramental procedure of the reception of the Greek-Catholic (Uniate) clergy and faithful in 1948, in Transylvania. It can be proved that the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church was not respecting the canon law and the sacramental discipline, which stated that an un-Orthodox believer must be received in the Orthodox Church after a previous catechization, after denouncing the un-orthodox errors, after confessing the Orthodox faith in a solemn way, assisted by testimonies and a priest with episcopal mandate, and according with a certain practice, even receiving the Holy Chrism. Stating even in our days that the “union” between Orthodox and Greek-Catholics in 1948 was a free one, implies a heavy charge for losing the canonicity of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Patriarchate. The Free Romanian Orthodox Church from Exile never accepted the canonicity of the 1948 events.

- Summary/Abstract:In the prayer dedicated to Márton Áron’s canonization, the author, Archbishop Bálint Lajos, attributed three features to the former Bishop of Alba Iulia: the guardian of truth, the protector of the persecuted, and a good shepherd of his people. All three features are exceptionally embodied by Márton Áron. Márton Áron fought for justice for the suffering people – this is how he became a good shepherd. As a Good Shepherd – faithful to his slogan (Non recuso laborem) – he neverturned down work and the suffering implied by it. We trust that the features attributed to him in the canonization prayer are highly adequate to the Servant of God, Bishop Márton Áron.

- Summary/Abstract:This study describes the situation of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest between1948 and 1964. During this period, which can be described as one of extreme persecution for the Catholic Church in Romania, the Catholic clergy had to suffer as a result of their disobedience to the communist regime. Throughout this while, the members of this clerical elite were convicted and sentenced to many years in prison, after the state authorities rejected the Draft Statute for the Latin Rite the Catholic Church and suspended Bishop Alexandru Theodor Cisar. To compensate for the shortcomings of such an approach, the Communist government attempted to overlay an institution with an ephemeral vocation on the institutions of the Church. The “Catholic Action Committee” failed dismally and the “democratic priests” who attempted to create this parallel church were excommunicated. In this climate, the Holy See appointed and consecrated bishops without the recognition of the Romanian state, and continued to exist even after some of its institutions were suppressed. All these issues will be examined in the present study in detail, and the conditions under which the Church of Rome stayed in existence will be explained accordingly.

- Summary/Abstract:In a world where we feel increasingly installing a “culture of death” Pope John Paul II, in 1995, recalls the founding principle of Catholic Christendom of every human existence: the unshakable belief in the God of life. God, the Creator and Lord of life, has the sovereign right of human existence. Therefore, anyone or for any reason, even the most laudable, cannot and does not have right to end the life of anyone. In this paper we want to show, reading the encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae, that the Church, inspired by the Spirit of Christ who has conquered death and restored the hope of the resurrection of man, has the mission to preach the life until the coming of the Saviour in his glory.

The date of this event was chosen in a very special way: on 12 October 1716, at 11:30 a.m., the Ottoman garrison of the city on the Bega raised the white flag in a gesture of surrender and peace after 42 days of siege and 164 years of rule over the city and the Banat. In this spirit, on Wednesday, 12 October 2016, at 11:30 a.m., all seven bells of St. George’s Dome, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Timișoara, rang for fifteen minutes in memory of that historic moment and of those who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of the Christian faith and human dignity three centuries ago.

- Summary/Abstract:On Tuesday, 19 July 2016, starting at 7:00 p.m., the jubilee exhibition “Timișoara 1716. The Beginnings of a European City” (Temeswar 1716. Die Anfänge einer europäischen Stadt / Temesvár 1716. Egy európai város kezdetei / Темишвар 2016. Почеци једнога европског града / Timișoara 1716. The Beginnings of a European City) was opened at the Theresia Bastion, the current headquarters of the National Museum of Banat. The exhibition, historical, documentary, and artistic in character, marks what is likely the most important event in the modern history of Timișoara, the Banat, and even the city’s confessional life: liberation from Ottoman occupation. For the Diocese of Timișoara (formerly of Cenad), as well as for the other Christian denominations, this moment signified a reorganization of spiritual life under the new conditions of belonging to a Christian state—the Habsburg Empire—and of emerging from Ottoman‑Islamic oppression.

- Summary/Abstract:Three hundred years have passed since Abbot Mekhitar of Sebaste (1676–1749), who arrived in Venice in 1715, received the island of San Lazzaro from the Senate of the Serenissima Republic, an island that had previously belonged to the Order of the Mendicants. Immediately afterward, restoration work on the church and the expansion of the island—then in an advanced state of decay—began. This is not the moment or place to recount all the positive achievements accomplished by this servant of God and his disciples for Armenia, the Diaspora, Venice, and the Catholic Church. Despite the difficulties faced by the priest from Sivas, which forced him to flee Modon, the land of the Peloponnese or Morea, which had fallen into the hands of the Turks who had taken it from the Venetian Republic, he received from Providence—in which he firmly believed—the zeal and courage to create a congregation that continues to this day, preserving on the one hand the Benedictine tradition, and on the other the finest monastic traditions of the Armenian and, more broadly, Eastern Christian world.

- Summary/Abstract:In 2014, the Romanian Academy Publishing House released the volume Raymund Netzhammer in Romania, in the Footsteps of the Spirit of the Place, coordinated by Violeta Barbu and Nikolaus Netzhammer. The material reproduces a series of articles by the Benedictine archbishop, printed in Salzburg in the journal Katholischen Kirchenzeitung, from the period when the Catholic prelate was a professor at the archdiocesan seminary. As the author of the preface, Violeta Barbu, notes, “continuing the valorization of the legacy left by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bucharest Raymund Netzhammer, the editors have selected, in the Restitutio section, a group of articles published by him in foreign and Romanian journals, most of them in German, to which is added Erinnerungen an Staatsminister Sturdza.”

- Summary/Abstract:Our history is something real, composed of the events that have shaped us as a people, as believers, as a church in the sense of a community of the faithful, but also as an ecclesial body in the sense of an administrative structure. Within this framework fits the Short History of the Assemblies of Christians after the Gospel in Romania (1899–1989), written by Victor Dumitrescu based on the notes of Gheorghe Oprea‑Teodorescu and Marian Ionescu. The work was published under the auspices of the Union of Christian Churches after the Gospel in Romania and includes a Foreword written by Virgil Achihai, the acting president of the Union and secretary general of the Evangelical Alliance of Romania, as well as a critical study and notes by historian Bogdan Emanuel Răduț.

- Keywords:Romanian Orthodox Church; Romanian Church United with Rome; communist ideology; Patriarch Justinian Marina; forced reunification;
- Summary/Abstract:Recently in Romania, within the Romanian Orthodox Church, contrasting attitudes have resurfaced regarding the recent history of the Romanian Church United with Rome, bringing to light—if that were still necessary—contradictory views that reopen deep wounds. What happened? On the evening of 23 October 2017, the official TV channel of the Romanian Orthodox Church broadcast a documentary titled “Patriarch Justinian Marina. The Reunification of the Romanian Orthodox Church”, which presented a perspective based on a communist‑ideological narrative, entirely offensive toward the Romanian Church United with Rome. The abusive reunification of Greek‑Catholic Romanians with the Orthodox Church, orchestrated by the communist authorities, was exalted as a form of “divine pedagogy.”
