Summary/Abstract: The Christian Baptist Church in Romania got involved in the life of the “city” ever since 1856,when the first German Baptist Church in the Romanian Old Kingdom was formed in Bucharest. It evolved gradually, became better organized and got involved in community life. At the same time, it had to face opposition from governing authorities and the official Church. Among the measures taken against the Baptist Church after 1939, mainly between 1940 and 1943 there was a resolution seeking the believers’ deportation to Bug, and decisions to outlaw and arrest the pastors and to close and requisition the chapels. 23 August 1944 brought along a wave of unexpected freedom in the life of the Baptist community. The aim of the present article is to point out that inspite of the aforementioned issues, during 1938-1947 the Baptist Church switched from being a marginalized community to being put on an equal footing with the other religious cults.
