Summary/Abstract: Bishop of Timișoara Petar Petrovici, member of the Petrovici noble family from Karlovitz, was bishop of Gornji Karlovac, Arad and Timișoara. He was one of the most important promoters of Enlightenment and the French Encyclopedia. At the gathering from Timișoara, in 1790,he was one of the candidates for the position of Metropolit of Karlovitz, being the adept of the pro-Austrian orientation in Serbian people’s policy. For his merits he was appointed counselor of the Habsburgic Emperor and decorated with the Order of the Iron Crown. In 1800 Timișoara opened the first theology course for the Serbian and Romanian orthodox priests. Bishop Petrovici died in 1800 leaving one of the largest personal libraries among the Serbs.
