Summary/Abstract: The multi-author monograph dedicated to the issues of translating Polish Sign Language (PSL) contains thirteen articles addressing the subjects which have not been raised before in the debate on the translation of the PSL. It discusses the challenges of the initial steps of the translator’s professional career, alliance of translators towards the Deaf community, specificity of the literary translation, supervision, technical aspects of the remote work, and feedback. Both the individual texts and the volume as a whole represent a modern approach to the issue of the sign language translation studies from the theoretical and the practical perspective.

- Summary/Abstract:The establishment of a formal training programme for interpreters combining Polish Sign Language and Polish arises from the needs of an increasingly active and demanding Deaf community, which advocates for its rights, articulates opinions and positions before various institutions, and participates in numerous local and national events. Currently, the advancement of skills among signed language interpreters in Poland is hampered by the absence of standardised educational frameworks, a lack of Polish Sign Language instructors specialising in interpreting pedagogy and possessing adequate linguistic knowledge. It is a popular belief that learning Polish Sign Language while simultaneously acquiring interpreting skills suffices to qualify individuals for the profession of signed language interpreter. However, this approach is neither optimal nor effective for the practice of interpretation. To meet the expectations of informed users of interpreting services, it is essential not only to attain proficiency in Polish Sign Language but also to develop appropriate interpreting competences, gain relevant experience, cultivate an awareness of the ethical issues associated with the profession, and commit to continuous professional development.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article was to compare higher education programmes for signed language interpreters at universities within the European Union as well as the European Free Trade Association. This overview serves as a point of reference for the sole such programme in Poland, offered at the University of Warsaw with major in applied linguistics (with focus on Polish Sign Language as language C). The research material consisted of study programmes published on the official websites of several dozen universities. Statistical methods were employed for the analysis. The results presented in this study may act as a resource for the development of future study programmes in Poland.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the results of a qualitative study aimed at describing the challenges and supportive factors encountered by Polish Sign Language (PJM) interpreters at the onset of their careers. The study involved eight hearing interpreters with professional experience ranging from 1 to 7 years. Transcriptions of recordings from semi-structured individual interviews were subjected to inductive thematic analysis. Seven main themes emerged: difficulties related to interpreting skills, challenges specific to the Deaf community and signed language interpreters, psychological factors as challenges, the significance of education, environmental support, changes in internal beliefs, and the role of practice and the passage of time. The findings of this study provide insights into the experiences that shape the early stages of interpreting careers and offer guidance for the further evolution of the PJM interpreting profession as well as future research.

- Summary/Abstract:In the relationship between Deaf clients and hearing interpreters, there exists a disparity in privileges. Throughout history, Deaf individuals have globally faced discrimination associated with the prohibition of signed language use. The current situation of Deaf individuals in Poland continues to involve linguistic discrimination. In contrast, those who facilitate accessibility for individuals with disabilities are often applauded for their good deeds. Fifteen years after the establishment of the Association of Polish Sign Language Interpreters, we observe shifts in the ethos of work among successive generations of PJM interpreters. Drawing from international frameworks and research on the perception of signed language interpreters, we examined the ally interpreter model. We described specific situations in which a hearing interpreter adopts an ally stance, demonstrating flexibility in response to the client’s needs. We propose a novel perspective on the code of ethics for PJM interpreters, suggesting that these principles may be subject to modification by mutual agreement between the Deaf client and the hearing interpreter. We recommend establishing initiatives that create a space for information exchange between Deaf clients and hearing interpreters.

- Summary/Abstract:Numerous studies in the field of interpreting, as well as documents produced by professional interpreter organisations, educators, and practitioners, confirm that preparation for interpreting is an integral component of the interpreter’s workshop. Such preparation is crucial to delivering high-quality interpreting, regardless of the source and target languages involved in the transfer. This article outlines various preparatory activities that, according to relevant literature and recommendations from industry organisations, should be considered at different stages of interpreter’s preparation process – from the moment one contemplates accepting an assignment to the period following its completion. The recommendations presented herein pertain to the environments and contexts in which interpreting occurs, the participants in the interpreted interactions, and the forms of work (whether in a team or remotely). When effectively implemented, these recommendations will positively influence the quality of the interpretation, the interpreter’s sense of comfort and professionalism, as well as the clients’ trust and favourable perception of the interpreter.
