Summary/Abstract: The establishment of a formal training programme for interpreters combining Polish Sign Language and Polish arises from the needs of an increasingly active and demanding Deaf community, which advocates for its rights, articulates opinions and positions before various institutions, and participates in numerous local and national events. Currently, the advancement of skills among signed language interpreters in Poland is hampered by the absence of standardised educational frameworks, a lack of Polish Sign Language instructors specialising in interpreting pedagogy and possessing adequate linguistic knowledge. It is a popular belief that learning Polish Sign Language while simultaneously acquiring interpreting skills suffices to qualify individuals for the profession of signed language interpreter. However, this approach is neither optimal nor effective for the practice of interpretation. To meet the expectations of informed users of interpreting services, it is essential not only to attain proficiency in Polish Sign Language but also to develop appropriate interpreting competences, gain relevant experience, cultivate an awareness of the ethical issues associated with the profession, and commit to continuous professional development.
