Úvod do studia archeologie

Author(s): Vladimír Podborský / Language(s): Czech

Před zhruba půlstoletím napsal prominentní britský prehistorik Gordon Vere Childe (1892–1957) jeden z prvních, ne-li vůbec první, novodobých úvodů do studia archeologie: A Short Introduction to Archaeology (Krátký úvod do archeologie). Od té doby byly takových úvodů napsány desítky, až po volnou, žertovnou formou napsanou repliku knihy G. V. Childa, Archaeology. A Very Short Introduction od Paula Bahna (Oxford University Press 1996, 2002; český překlad Anna Kalmanová, Archeologie. Průvodce pro každého, Vimperk: Dokořán, 2007). U nás byly nejvíce používány příručky: H. J. Eggers, Einführung in die Vorgeschichte (München 1959); S. J. Laet, Archeologija i jejproblemy (polské vydání, Warszawa 1960); F. Felgenhauer, Einführung in die Urgeschichtsforschung (Freiburg 1973); H. Müller-Karpe, Einführung in die Vorgeschichte (München 1979) a možná i poněkud náročnější polský sborník W. Hensel – G. Donato – S. Tabaczyński, eds., Teoria i praktika badań archeologicznych I. Przeslanki metodologiczne (Wrocław–Warszawa–Kraków–Gdańsk–Łódź 1986).

Cestami lidového tance. Zdenka Jelínková a česká etnochoreologie

Author(s): Martina Pavlicová / Language(s): Czech

Zdenka Jelínková was a prominent researcher in the area of folk dancing, who was present at the birth of Czech ethnochoreology after the Second World War. She was born on 30th March 1920 in south-eastern Moravia in Velká nad Veličkou, which belongs to the Horňácko ethnographic region. In her childhood and youth she still had opportunities to encounter numerous manifestations of traditional folk culture, which were gradually disappearing from everyday life due to the influence of modern society. She came from a white-collar family; however, she was attracted by rural folk culture, mainly folklore manifestations. She regularly returned to Horňácko even after her family moved to Brno. The closure of universities during the Nazi occupation in 1939 prevented her from studying the subjects she had already enrolled in (Physical Education – French), therefore she at least graduated from the school for instructors of the Czech Sokol Community (Česká obec sokolská) in Prague (1940) and worked as a teacher at various schools until 1950. Her interest in folk dancing and in children folklore did not wane even during her teaching career; she was also active in the folklore movement. In 1949 her erudition brought her to a group of collectors who were making folklore records for the collections of the Folk Song Institute (Ústav pro lidovou píseň) in Brno. In 1950 she was hired as a qualified worker of this institution and worked here until her retirement in 1982. Not even then did she give up her ethnochoreological activities. She died on 5th October 2005.

Author(s): Jaroslav Kovarnik,Vladimír Podborský / Language(s): Czech

Ve chvíli předávání tohoto svazku „Postav moravské archeologie“ do tisku cítí autoři povinnost připomenout čtenářům jednu důležitou okolnost, která – jak se ukazuje – provází a do budoucna stále bude vydávání „Postav“ provázet. Jde o úplnost či neúplnost a o kritičnost jednotlivých svazků. Malé monografie stěží mohou osudy a životní dílo jednotlivých protagonistů moravské archeologie vyčerpat bezezbytku.

This publication has two objectives: to contribute to the 90th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Masaryk University, while at the same time opening up a specialist debate about the traditions and conditions of higher education in the context of modern Czech history, and the prospects for its future development. In the first chapter, entitled “The Journey Towards a Second Czech University,” the authors examine the events leading up to the establishment of Masaryk University in 1919. Particular attention ispaid to three factors which played key roles in its inception: (1) the condition and development of higher education in the western part of the Habsburg monarchy, which not only involved universities (traditionally those in Prague, Cracow, Vienna, Innsbruck, Lviv, and later Černovice), but also colleges of higher education (in Olomouc and Štýrský Hradec); (2) the conditions particularto Brno, with disagreements between German and Czech elements, which constituted only one facet of the question of nationality in the middle of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious empire; and lastly, (3) the position of the city of Brno and its civic politics, which were codetermined by industrial and cultural developments. In this part of the text the emphasis shifts from an academic and political view of the establishment of the new university to how it was viewed by the public. From this perspective the foundation of the university can be seen as a “revolutionary act.”

Author(s): Petr Hrubý,Petr Hejhal,Karel Malý,Petr Kočár,Libor Petr / Language(s): Czech

The book presents the synthesis of the environmental and archaeological approaches which can answer a principally historical questions related to the uprise of the high mediaeval settlement structure but also of the beginnings of the gold and silver exploitation in the project base area. The book offers structured data to the mediaeval development in the region which is still lacking direct archaelogical evidence in many areas. A low and sometimes difficult detectability of early deforestation, settlement and a whole spectre of the mining activities is compensated by archaeoenvironmental, geochemical and archaeometallurgical analytics of the alluvial sediments in this territory.

Every week there is talk in the news of suicide bombers, but apart from that, suicide is a taboo. The literary texts examined here break through this silence. Suicide can be more than just an end, it can become the only way to be yourself. An analysis of the literary text that deals with this subject may reveal to the recipients the causes of suicide. The analysis of suicide in narrative texts can lead to the result that in the suicide the characters find the means by which they are formed. The present monograph outlines how this process takes place. The analysis focuses on the following works: Der Fall Franza by Ingeborg Bachmann, Wunschloses Unglück by Peter Handke, and Der Untergeher by Thomas Bernhard.

Pod ochranou Kleió: Historické obory na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

When Masaryk University was first established, the disciplines related to historical study were most strongly represented. This year's 100th anniversary of the founding of Masaryk University offered a unique opportunity to look back on the changes that these fields of historical study have undergone in the university's first century. Over time, they gradually separated from the history seminary, and other seminaries and institutes were established which were closely connected to history and its processes, such as those pertaining to the history of art, archaeology, museology, archival and auxiliary historical sciences, and ethnology. The authors of this publication endeavoured to answer questions concerning the significance of these Brno seminaries for the history of science and learning in both domestic and international contexts, the personalities who emerged in Brno, and what external influences were at work in the creation of fields of history as institutions at Masaryk University Faculty of Arts. The publication is divided into three parts: Institutional Development; Personalities; and Traditions, Innovations and Projects. It is from this perspective that the authors look at the development of today's Department of History, the Department of the History of Art, the Department of Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archive Studies, the Department of European Ethnology and the Department of Archaeology and Museology throughout the twists and turns of Czech history from the founding of independent Czechoslovakia to the present day.

Divadlo, můj osud: Setkávání s Bořivojem Srbou

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

The book entitled Divadlo, můj osud. Setkávání s Bořivojem Srbou [Theatre, My Destiny. Encounters with Bořivoj Srba.] consists of ten interviews with the important Czech theatrologist, historian, dramaturge, and pedagogue Bořivoj Srba (1931–2014). These interviews were broadcast under the title Divadlo, můj osud [Theater, My Destiny.] by the radio station Český rozhlas Brno in 2000. In the 1950s, Bořivoj Srba worked as a dramaturge for the Mrštík Brothers Theatre, in the 1960s, he was chief dramaturge for the National Theatre Brno, and he was greatly responsible for the theatre's performances of political drama inspired by B. Brecht. He also co-founded the Goose on a String Theatre. The published interviews aim not only to resurrect the memories of one of Brno's most prolific theatre-makers on his own creative era in Brno theatres, but also to introduce his thoughts on theatre, which he elaborated in his historical and theoretical publications (focusing mainly on the theatre of the Czech interwar avant-gardes and theatrical activities during the Second World War) and his lectures on academic institutions (the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and the Faculty of Theatre of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts). The published interviews are supplemented with the memories of selected friends and students of Srba (Miloš Štědroň, Andrea Jochmanová, Veronika Valentová),which help us to fully understand the significance of this theatrologist. At the beginning of the 1990s, he significantly contributed to the restoration of an independent department of theatre studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. This was the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, which he headed between 1993 and 2000.

Uncertain eternity, or eternal uncertainty? The controversy about a geological repository for highly radioactive waste in the Czech Republic

Author(s): Karel Svačina / Language(s): English

This book examines the controversy over the plans to construct a deep geological repository for highly radioactive waste in the Czech Republic. Since the 1990s, state authorities have identified a number of locations as potentially suitable for the construction of the repository. However, the plans have met strong opposition from the affected municipalities, as well as from local and national NGOs. The controversy has lasted for almost two decades now, and arguably has not progressed much since the beginning. This book provides a detailed account of this controversy based on interviews with key actors, observations from public meetings and debates, policy documents, technical reports, and media coverage. With inspiration from literature from the field of science and technology studies (STS), the book analyses the controversy in terms of how risk and uncertainty are dealt with in the negotiations. Ultimately, the author suggests that a shift from a risk-based to an uncertainty-based perspective may offer a way out of the negotiation deadlock.

Kritika v pohybu: Literární kritika a metakritika 90. let 20. století

Author(s): Marek Lollok / Language(s): Czech

The book deals with the Czech literary criticism and metacriticism of 1990s, primarily in the form in which they have been appearing in literary journals of the period. Its main purpose is to explore the topic contextually as well as to evaluate it from today’s perspective. The book is divided into the eight parts: Introduction; Retrospectives; Anticipations; Postmodernist Criticism; Catholic, Christian, Spiritual etc. Criticism; Disputes over Authenticity, Critical Reflexions and Conclusion. They are relatively autonomous, but mutually corresponding; within these frames the most significant issues of literary criticism and metacriticism of the period are discussed. This approach provides a large scope of various points of view enabling the examination of the subject matter not merely in the strict chronological order but rather in the complex, multilateral (however sometimes overlapping) way. Except of the first and last one each chapter results in the summarizing and concluding résumé emphasizing the main points of the prior partial interpretations and highlighting their most important consequences. The first chapter provides a general introduction into the topic of literary criticism and metacriticism, its terminology, periodization and the overall theoretical background. To the chief concepts belongs the idea of “discourse” in the predominantly stylistic sense (i. e. discourse as interweawing text with context). The structure of the book is grounded in the idea of the synoptic-pulsatory model of literary history (coined by Peter Zajac and Dalibor Tureček), that is to say the understanding literature as a network “in progess” rather than a perfect stationary (categorical) system. In the following two chapters we explore two prevailing tendencies of Czech literary criticism at the beginning of 1990s. Then, relatively a great attention was paid to the matters of the past: numerous participants were looking back into the (not very distant) history, recapitulating and revising the prior development. Later on, the debates about the future of Czech literature prevailed and the specific atmosphere of waiting for the Great Critic or the Great Work of Art was established. In the next pair of chapters we examine two of the most recognizable types (streams) of critical thinking and writing in 1990s: Literary criticism under the influence of postmodernism and Criticism based on Christian belief. The former presents the context of postmodern thinking, mentions its chief representatives and discusses some particularities attributed to postmodernism in the contemporary Czech environment, the latter inquires the metamorphoses of Catholic (Christian) literary criticism, its platforms (especially the journal Souvislosti) as well as some concrete examples of this sort of literary reflection (first of all by Martin C. Putna, the most influential Catholic reviewer at that time). In the fifth chapter we examine the ongoing discussion about so called “authenticity” in literature which was accelerated by the enormous and continuously expanding popularity of literary diaries, memories, documentary literature etc. We also analyze the controversies concerning Jan Lopatka’s extremely critical approach and observe the extensive usage of the term “authenticity” in literary debates and its relevance as a criterion. Additionally we take a deeper look into the long-lasting antagonism between the magazine Tvar and Kritická Příloha Revolver Revue (including their prominent authors Pavel Janoušek and Michael Špirit); moreover, we investigate the most frequent arguments and strategies occuring in these disputes. The sixth chapter comments on some of the concrete reviews dealing with the most important Czech prose works published in 1990s (namely Celý život by Jan Zábrana, Jak se dělá chlapec by Ludvík Vaculík, Výchova dívek v Čechách by Michal Viewegh, Nesmrtelnost by Milan Kundera, Sestra by Jáchym Topol and finally Kniha Kraft by Martin C. Putna). These books and authors belong to the most reflected ones during the period in question. We primarily focus on the general values and methods of the most acclaimend literary critics of that time, however, a number of minor noteworhy contributions are not left out. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the previous analysies of metacritical texts by the concrete views into the real “everyday” critical practice concerning particular works of art. In the Conclusion part we put forward a synthesis of what we have described/ interpreted separately. We have identified several prominent topics that have gradually emerged in 1990s’ discussions about literature and literary criticism, such as dealing with the past, new situation of Czech literature after 1989, its suppositional future development, question of autonomy of literature, its relationship to reality, social relevance, “authenticity”, (im)possibility of normative (authoritative) approaches in literary criticism, large gap between the “high” and popular literature and some others. A number of them are still valid and highly topical.

Film – náš pomocník: Studie o (ne)užitečnosti českého krátkého filmu 50. let

Author(s): Dominika Bäuchelová,Veronika Jančová,Jana Kokešová,Barbora Ligasová,Eliška Malečková,Soňa Morgenthalová,Barbora Rudinská,Kateřina Šardická,Klára Váradi / Language(s): Czech

The collective monograph summarizes the results of the research in the history of the Czech short film of the 1950s, conducted by students of the Department of Film Studies and Audiovisual Culture at Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. Studies focusing on particular areas of industrial, agricultural, army, sports, cultural and other kinds of films discuss the cultural-political and economic conditions of developing this type of work, a thematic link with the requirements of the contracting authorities (especially the state), and their relation to other media that contracting institutions used to spread the same type of message. Besides the context, the essays examine also rhetorical and stylistic features of films. Two of the texts focus on specific distribution windows which short films entered namely the People's Film University of and cinemas called Čas (Time). Among others, these texts show that despite the programmatic approach the authorities failed to apply its cultural policy as expected. Studies balance ideological, economical and entertaining potential of short films, a show in which cases which one of them pushed and thus to what extent films understood as useful servants were really helpful.

Kultura reformacji i reformowanie w kulturze

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Już od czasów Maxa Webera w refleksji naukowej i filozoficznej pojawiała się myśl, że reformacja to nie tylko zjawisko historyczne, ale nade wszystko społeczno-kulturowe. Kojarzą się z nią m.in.: indywidualizm, doświadczeniowość, nowoczesność, innowacja, aktywizm, asceza w świecie, kreatywność, samorefleksja, komunitarianizm, oszczędność, rozwój rachunkowości, krytycyzm, kapitalizm, kultura pisma i druku, odczarowanie, sekularyzacja. To jedynie kilka przykładów zjawisk i wartości wiążących się nierozłącznie z szeroko rozumianą reformacją w kulturze. Samo istnienie reformacji owocuje historycznie pojęciem tolerancji i szacunku dla różnorodności, choć droga do tych wartości nie jest łatwa i bezbolesna.W dniach 22–24 maja 2017 roku odbyła się w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim i Akademii Muzycznej im. Bacewiczów w Łodzi interdyscyplinarna konferencja ze specjalnymi gośćmi z całego świata. W Łodzi obradowali m.in.: Rita Süssmuth (Niemcy), prof. Ian Hazlett (Glasgow, Szkocja), prof. lnes Murzaku (New Jersey, USA), prof. Ivo Pospíšil (Brno, Czechy), prof. Cora Dietl (Giessen, Niemcy), prof. Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg (Giessen, Niemcy).Tom zbiera wybrane aspekty kultury reformacji i reformowania w kulturze. Jest śladem tego, że wielokulturowa Łódź uczciła 500 lat reformacji, która przez dziesięciolecia odcisnęła także swój znaczący ślad w tym mieście.

Хърватското житие на св. Екатерина, александрийската девица и мъченица

Author(s): Simeon Stefanov / Language(s): Bulgarian,Croatian

This book offers a new edition with a transliteration and a detailed analysis of the linguistic peculiarities of a little-known in science and hitherto unexplored Medieval Croatian manuscript. This is the vita of St. Catherine “Legenda sv. Katarine divice” according to manuscript I c 6 from the Archives of HAZU. The text was created for the nuns from the Franciscan monastery “St. Ekaterina” in Zadar, was kept in the virgin Benedictine monastery “St. Maria” in Zadar, later became part of the rich book collection of Ivan Kukuljevic, and since 1869 it has been among the manuscripts of the library of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It was written in the vernacular from the region of Central and Northern Dalmatia from the period XIV-XV centuries. The writing, spelling, morphology, vocabulary of the selected manuscript are described and analyzed in detail. A special emphasis in the study is placed on the style of Croatian vita. Stylistic analysis overlaps each of the linguistic levels listed above. A supposed Latin prothograph, on which the Croatian translation was probably made, has also been recovered. The results of the textual analysis show that the style of the Croatian vita is unique, rarely influenced by the Latin text and is a testimony rather to the skills and experience of the translator/compiler in the translation/compilation activity.

This monograph concerns the photography of the American war in Vietnam by photo-journalist Larry Burrows, in the context of the history and American cultural discourses of the conflict. The book situates Burrows's work in the history of war photography and in the context of the particular conditions of photojournalism during the Vietnam War, and then focuses on the analysis and interpretation of specific works by the photographer: photoessays appearing regularly in LIFE magazine between 1963 and 1970. At the center of the discussion is the 1963 photostory entitled One Ride with Yankee Papa 13, a pivotal piece in the history of representations of the Vietnam conflict in American media.
