LGBT ČITANKA 3.

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian

Ženski pokret u Bosni i Hercegovini

Author(s): Zlatiborka Popov-Momčinović / Language(s): Bosnian

Lviv and Łódź at the Turn of 20th Century. Structure of Economic Space

Author(s): Bartosz Bartosiewicz,Mykoła Habrel,Natalia Lysyak,Anna Hoblyk,Stanisław Kozłowski,Svitlana Shults,Iwona Pielesiak / Language(s): English

The attempt to make a comparative study of Lviv and Łódź in search of certain regularities seems at the first glimpse rather farfetched, because apparently there are rather few analogies between the city of Lviv with its long history and multifunctional tradition and the monofunctional, rather young, industrial city of Łódź. But deeper analysis shows that despite many differences in the course of the history of both cities, some common tendencies can be traced, such as dynamic demographic and spatial development in the second half of the 19th century based on introduction of railway transport, the building of socio-economic and spatial structures of these cities by multi-cultural local communities, and going through half-a-century period of centralized socialist economy after the Second World War. Lviv and Łódź regained political independence almost at the same time (1989 in Poland and 1991 in Ukraine) and entered the route of democratic development, undergoing political and socio-economic transformations during the last 20 years. As a result of these processes as well as the influence of globalization, today we can observe in Łódź and in Lviv similar problems and phenomena, influencing their spatial development and functional restructuring.

Księga Pamięci poświęcona studentom Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego poległym i zmarłym w czasie walk o niepodległość 1918-1921

Author(s): Robert Gawkowski,Andrzej Krzysztof Kunert,Krzysztof Pilecki / Language(s): Polish

The book, pioneering on the Polish market, contains biographies of 128 students of the University of Warsaw who were killed or died during the fights for independence and borders of the resurrected Polish state. In over 200-year history of the University, there were moments when the academic community had to prove itself not only in the field of science, but also in the field of battle. So far, however, there has been no detailed scientific research on the participation of students of the University of Warsaw in the fight for Polish independence. This book partially fills the gap. As a result of searches carried out in the Archive of the University of Warsaw and in the Central Military Archive, as well as a review of the press of that time, the authors managed to verify and complete the pre-war list of students who gave their lives in defense of their homeland in 1918–1921, whose names were engraved on the plaque unveiled in 1924 in the Kazimierzowski Palace. It is certainly not a complete list yet, but an excellent starting point for further research on the subject.

Gimnazisták és társadalom Magyarországon a 19. század első felében

Author(s): Csaba Sasfi / Language(s): Hungarian

The volume analyses the role of a former secondary education institution, the gymnasium, in a period when the birth right-based estates system gradually gave way to the meritocracy of modern bourgeois society. The gymnasium played a significant role in this transformation, since this type of institution accepted students from diverse social backgrounds. In this way, it not only became an important means of increasing intellectualization, but also provided a widening channel for social mobility. The study focuses on the operation and the influence of the gymnasium as a social institution. Using and connecting a wide range of sources on various levels, it analyses the schooling processes in gymnasia and further education, the entry points to the spheres of higher or ‘academic’ education (to use a contemporary term), as well as the unique distribution of upward mobility afterwards.

Practical Horsemanship in Medieval Arthurian Romance

Author(s): Anastasija Ropa / Language(s): English

The figure of a knight on horseback is the emblem of medieval chivalry. Much has been written on the ideology and practicalities of knighthood as portrayed in medieval romance, especially Arthurian romance, and it is surprising that so little attention was hitherto granted to the knight’s closest companion, the horse. This study examines the horse as a social indicator, as the knight’s animal alter ego in his spiritual peregrinations and earthly adventures, the ups and downs of chivalric adventure, as well as the relations between the lady and her palfrey in romance. Both medieval authors and their audiences knew more about the symbolism and practice of horsemanship than most readers do today. By providing the background to the descriptions of horses and horsemanship in Arthurian romance, this study deepens the readers’ appreciation of these texts. At the same time, critical reading of romance supplies information about the ideology and daily practice of horsemanship in the Middle Ages that is otherwise impossible to obtain from other sources, be it archaeology, chronicles or administrative documentation.

New Media Behind the Iron Curtain. Cultural History of Video Microcomputers and Satellite Television in Communist Poland

Author(s): Piotr Sitarski,Maria B. Garda,Krzysztof Jajko / Language(s): English

During the years of the Polish People’s Republic, Poles were cut off from the western world. Travel was restricted, as was access to out- side culture and goods. This unique situation led to a period of great ingenuity in the realm of new media. Not only were media adapted to suit Poles’ needs, but new technology was fashioned to gain access to western television, film and video games. Bringing people together, VCRs, computers and satellite television were thus a window to the outside world and contemporary to the mobilisation of Solidarity and the end of communism. As such, their diffusion is an important but largely overlooked aspect of Poland’s history. Acutely aware of this, the authors of this book recount new media behind the Iron Curtain in a way that will appeal to scholars and non-academic readers alike. Coupling archival research with in depth interviews, they bring to life the talent and determination of the PPR’s new media pioneers, compelling others to dig further.“One of the strengths of this book, which makes it such a delightful read, is the feeling of chaotic technical experimentation with objects and practices whose meaning has not yet been settled, in a context where the authorities tried to be controlling and restrictive but were mostly incapable of understanding what they should do in order to achieve this.”– from the Foreword by Graeme Kirkpatrick

Kruh, mašta & mast: Prizori i memorabilije o staroj Puli (1947.-1957.)

Author(s): Miroslav Bertoša / Language(s): Croatian

Bertoša's approach to the first decade of post-WWII Pula (1947–1957) is distinctive and different, fresh and original, intimate and rich in content, far from generally accepted stereotypes and imposed ideological lessons. Because the past, as the Istrian and Croatian historian points, belongs to everyone. Within these unusual pages, Miroslav Bertoša opens a field of research neglected in Croatian historiography. It is about the so-called "pesonal history" (ego-histoire), or "intellectual biography", well known in Western European cultural circles. It is a history experienced by an individual in the dramatic context of survival and carried within himself during lifetime. Time that has just passed no longer has a political "owner" and ideological "supervisor", it becomes a segment of the past reality that can be experienced and documented from a personal, individual, exceptional and unrepeatable angle. Miroslav Bertoša (1938) is a historian and long-term scientific advisor at the Institute of Historical and Social Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), now a professor at the University of Juraj Dobrila in Pula. First Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Trieste (1995-1998). Associate member of HAZU. He began publishing essays, articles and critiques in 1954, and since 1963 he has been researching modern Istrian history and Istrian anti-fascism, as well social, political, demographic and ethnic components of the Venetian part of Istria and the northern Adriatic area from the 16th to the 18th century. He is a connoisseur of contemporary historiography, and especially of movements in the avant-garde French Annales school. Alongside Robert Matijašić he was coeditor of the Istrian Encyclopedia (2005).

Od idylli do ironii. Literatura węgierska wobec Zagłady w latach 1944-1948

Author(s): Kinga Piotrowiak-Junkiert / Language(s): Polish

This is the first monograph in Polish devoted to Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust literature from the years 1944-1948. The theoretical part of the publication presents the situation of this literature in its heyday, models of Jewish biographies in Hungary, the evolution of texts focusing on the Jewish question, and the metaphor of being a Jew in the Danube lands in interwar essays and prose. The interpretation section presents selected literary works by authors such as Terez Rudnóy, Miklós Radnóti, Erno Szep, Istvan Órkeny, and Istvan Vas, as well as ghetto literature. The texts subjected to meticulous analysis represent the successive experiences of writers of Jewish origin: forced labour in Serbia and on the Eastern Front, concentration camps, large ghettos, international ghettos, internment camps. The interpretation part uses contemporary research methodology (e.g. gender and ecocritical reading). What is also of significance is the fact that the author of this book is Polish, has authored another important and widely commented work, Świadomość zwrócona przeciwko sobie samej. Imre Kertesz wobec Zagłady (Consciousness Turned Against Itself. Imre Kertész Versus the Holocaust), is a Polish scholar, translator from Hungarian (including Kertesz's prose), essayist and poet. All her competences intertwine tightly in her latest work and become the basis of a book that will attract the non-professional reader and be of outstanding scientific value.

Historia, manipulacja i trauma

Author(s): Filip Kubiaczyk / Language(s): Polish

The author undertakes an analysis of the narrative of Catalonia’s past, in particular where it concerns its relations with Spain which, in the Catalan discourse, happen to be presented in a way that moulds historical awareness of Catalans in terms of injustices the nation has suffered. Focusing on “victimhood” makes it possible to forge a sense of community by celebrating historical trauma. Consequently, we are dealing not so much with history as critical reflection on the past, but with a history of memory. This book sets out to show how the landmarks of Catalan history – the defeat of 1714 in particular – became a salient interpretive trope which, having assumed the shape of a spectre of the past that haunts the Catalan community, dictates how that past should be remembered and perceived.

Geneza i palingeneza życia w dziewiętnastowiecznej nauce i literaturze francuskiej

Author(s): Juliette Azoulai,Carmen Husti,Marta Sukiennicka / Language(s): Polish

In the nineteenth century, scientists' discoveries resonated not only within the closed walls of laboratories and academies but also in literary and social space. They changed the way life and humans were presented in literature: since then, it has been possible to reflect on the origins of life, distant human ancestors, and species that will replace humans in the course of biological evolution. This book aims to help introduce the Polish reader to these unobvious links between literature and natural science in nineteenth-century France.

Życie i nauki o życiu w literaturze francuskiej i polskiej XIX wieku. Studia

Author(s): Gisèle Séginger ,Barbara Łuczak,Mirosław Loba / Language(s): Polish

This book takes a historical look at the relationship between French and Polish literature and the natural sciences in the nineteenth century. The three studies present the shift in the scientific paradigm that occurred at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; they also show the impact this shift had on literary practice in Poland and France. The works prove that modern literature entered into a dialogue with natural sciences, which had been undergoing extremely intensive development since the mid-eighteenth century: botany, zoology, physiology, and later biology became an attractive source for the literary imagination and contributed to a new reading of the classical relations between nature and culture. For the authors whose works are discussed in the following chapters (including Jules Michelet, Gustave Flaubert, Honoré de Balzac and Dyzma Bończa-Tomaszewski), knowledge of nature makes it possible to reread the history of cultures, states and civilizations, to describe contemporary reality and diagnose its characteristic phenomena, and even to envision the future. It also allows us to see what is common to humans, animals and plants.
