Summary/Abstract: The collection “Ethnology of Serbs in Hungary: situation and perspectives” contains papers from the scientific conference held under the same name on November 19 and 20, 2010 in Budapest, organized by the Serbian Institute in Budapest and co-organized by the Ethnographic Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Ethnic Section of the Hungarian Ethnographic Society. This conference is intended as the first in a series of conferences dedicated to various scientific fields considered to be of greatest interest to the Serbian community in Hungary (ethnology, linguistics, history and social sciences – sociology, political science, law), which will be organized by the Serbian Institute (founded in 2009) in order to obtain an overview of the situation, identify shortcomings and set priorities for further research projects. The aim of the meeting was, therefore, a critical summary of the total results of ethnological and ethnographic work among Serbs in Hungary to date. It was attended by 17 participants from Hungary and Serbia. A round table was also held as part of the meeting, the aim of which was to discuss the needs and possibilities of organizing further research.

- Summary/Abstract:The Serbian Institute in Budapest was founded in 2009 with the aim of assisting, encouraging and organizing scientific research on the past and present social reality of Serbs in Hungary. One of the most important scientific fields in which research is being carried out, or has been carried out, regarding Serbs in Hungary is ethnology. Despite the importance of this field, in our opinion, there are numerous shortcomings in the results and systematization of ethnological research on Serbs in Hungary to date. Starting from personal motivations to the motivations of the Serbian community in Hungary, we will try to provide an overview of areas within ethnology, as well as border areas of related sciences in which there are gaps or in which it is expected that further necessary research will be able to be carried out in the organization of the Serbian Institute in Budapest (from documentation, description and/or collection and analysis of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to research into traditional and contemporary life in both rural and urban areas). This “map” or “register” of research can serve as a kind of roadmap for further work in ethnology, in the hope of reaching a synthesis of the ethnology of Serbs in Hungary that is also accessible to public education.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper briefly presents the author's long-term work on the problems of ethnology and ethnography of Serbs in Hungary. The first part briefly summarizes the research work, which relates to the traditional culture - primarily to calendar customs - of Serbian people in Hungary, especially those Serbs living in settlements along the Danube. This work began in 1955 in Pomaz, and was most comprehensively presented (in a broader South Slavic context) in the book Délszláv hoszótsok a Duna létő [Customs of the South Slavs along the Danube], published in 1988. The author was a long-term scientific associate of the Ethnographic Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 1979 to 1987, she was also the editor of the journal Ethnography of the South Slavs in Hungary, published by the Hungarian Ethnographic Society. In addition, from 1983 to 1991, she organized three very successful Yugoslav-Hungarian ethnographic conferences with partner institutions from the former Yugoslavia. These aspects of Dr. Marija Kiš's work are discussed in the second part of the paper.

- Summary/Abstract:Ethnological works on Serbs in Hungary are viewed in the light of what was published in the proceedings of the Békéscsaba conferences (1975–2004), the journals Ethnography of the South Slavs (1975–1993) and Ethnography of Serbs in Hungary (1997–), only one issue of Folklór és tradíció (VII, 1994), as well as some articles and books published in the last four decades in Serbia and Hungary in the Serbian language. Thematic classification has been carried out on works that relate to Serbs in Hungary, ethnolinguistic syntheses, family studies, a historical and archival compendium on the optira, but also historical novels from the past of Serbs in Hungary and optans in Serbia, all in accordance with the understanding that analytical monographs precede and complement synthetic work. All of the above, with the addition of a sociological study on the indigenous population and an analysis of statistical data on Serbs in Hungary, fits very well with the broadly understood issues of ethnological sciences. In addition, popular scientific activity has not been forgotten.

- Summary/Abstract:In the late 1960s and early 1970s, an initiative was launched by Hungarian ethnographers, academics Gyula Ortutai and Ivan Balaša, to undertake ethnographic research among the then recognized national minorities in Hungary – Germans, Romanians, Slovaks and South Slavs (Slovenes, Serbs and Croats). This initiative met with similar efforts among the members of the minorities themselves. The systematic collection of national treasures began in 1971, and in 1974–1975, the Doroća Kanizhai Museum in Mohács became the so-called basic museum for South Slavic minorities, collecting its material not only in the Baranja region, but also in the entire country. The first permanent museum exhibition from this area was opened in 1976 under the name "Baranja Croatian and Serbian Groups". The paper will specifically discuss the collection of ethnographic material among Serbs in Hungary.

- Summary/Abstract:Đuro Franković (Fok na Drava, 1945, in Hungarian editions: Frankovics György) was among the first to begin recording the oral traditions, beliefs and customs of the South Slavs, as Serbs, Croats and Slovenes were officially collectively referred to in Hungary during the socialist period, while still a student in Pécs, in the late 1960s. As a journalist for the Serbian-Croatian broadcast of Hungarian Radio, i.e. Hungarian Television, and an associate of the Croatian-Serbian Department at the Pécs Teachers College, he tirelessly toured Croatian and Serbian villages for decades and, while carrying out his journalistic duties, collected a vast amount of ethnological material. In addition to the ethnographic material from Croatian settlements in Podravina, the material he collected from the remaining Serbs in the Hungarian part of Baranja, as well as in Serbian places in Pomorie and the surroundings of Budapest, is also significant. He devoted special attention to the issue of mythical creatures and folk beliefs, as a very archaic layer in folklore and a theoretically very interesting area.

- Summary/Abstract:The review of ethnographic research among Serbs in Deska, which is based on the rich personal experience of Borivoj Rus, one of the authors, contains a brief historical overview of the past of the village of Deska and the Serbian community in it in the introduction. In this work, the main attention is paid to how the folklore tradition (folk songs, folk music, folk dances) of the Serbian community in Deska was collected and presented on stage in the period 1970–1990. The basic work was carried out within the framework of the “Banat” association (Christopher Brcan), and the most significant contributions are the contributions of researchers Dr. László Felfeldi (Musicological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) and Igor Grín (Munkáci County Museum in Békéscsaba). In addition to collecting ethnographic material from the field of oral folklore, attention was also paid to collecting handicrafts, primarily textiles and costumes that are presented in the Serbian native collection. The material collected and stored in the museum depots in Békéscsaba and Szeged awaits further processing and presentation. The press release also presents the work on the protection of the old Serbian cemetery in Deska, which was carried out in 2011–2012. thanks to European Union funds. Research into the local Serbian vernacular (Pavle Ivić, Predrag Stepanović, Sofija Rakić-Milo- radović) is also mentioned. At the end of the article, we find a list of all the Deščani volumes published so far, in which the results of research into the ethnography of Serbs in Deska are published. In addition, articles on this topic published in the edition "Pčesa" from Novi Sad and the edition "Ethnography of Serbs in Hungary" from Budapest are also listed. Studies concerning Serbs from the extremely important and high-quality monograph of the village "History and Ethnography of Deske" published in 1984 are also listed.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents the concept and results of previous research on Serbs in Budapest and its surroundings within the framework of projects of the Ethnographic Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Belgrade). It will primarily focus on two studies of ethnic identity, which the author herself conducted among Serbs in the village of Lowry (1989–1992) and in Budapest and four nearby settlements (1995–1998), or on two monographs that represent the most comprehensive results of these studies so far: Serbs in the village of Lowry in Hungary during the 20th century (1995) and (N)i ovde (n)i tamo: ethnic identity of Serbs in Hungary (2008). The paper discusses their goals and results, as well as some limitations and possible directions for further research.

- Summary/Abstract:The presentation will present the scientific and methodological research process and the results of the work on the topic of Serbs in Batanje: ethnic identification and stratification to date. The research strategy includes: a historical dimension – reconstruction of the past, a synchronic plane – the study of everyday life in a multiethnic environment and the symbolic system in the formation of ethnic identity. Ethnological work involves complex field research based on the collection of extensive written and oral material, photo and video recordings, surveys and interviews, etc. The presentation outlines further guidelines and perspectives for researching ethnic processes within the framework of contemporary integration processes and cultural and social specificities. In this sense, ethnological monographic research on multiethnic environments and regional units is a relevant scientific project in inter-institutional and inter-state cooperation.

- Summary/Abstract:The archive, together with the Library of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Buda, represents one of the most important Serbian cultural institutions outside the borders of Serbia. The preserved materials provide a large amount of data on the life and work of Serbs in the areas of Hungary, or the former Hungary, which have not been used in ethnological research to date. Data on the area where Serbian life lived or still lives, the number of inhabitants, personal property, property of churches and schools, data on cemeteries, monasteries, endowments, contributions and contributors, customs, religiosity, family relationships, personal and collective destinies, everyday life and attitude towards identity, are only part of the sources that the archive materials provide, opening up a range of possibilities for research in various fields of social sciences. By researching the funds of the Eparchy of Buda, one can obtain a wide variety of data significant for ethnological research. Using the examples of several ethnological authors who have used archival sources in their work, we learn about the dimension and role of these sources for ethnology/anthropology today.

- Keywords:ethnolinguistics; research by the Balkanological Institute SANA; archived materials; Serbian language communities in Hungary
- Summary/Abstract:Field research on Serbs in Hungary began with the main goal of producing a more extensive ethnolinguistic study that would simultaneously shed light on both traditional culture and local dialects. Team field research by the Institute of Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts was conducted on three occasions. During September 2001, a team consisting of Biljana Sikimić, Marija Ilić and Marija Vučković worked on Čepelska ada in the settlement of Čip and (for one day only) in Lovra. In Tolna County, a research team (Biljana Sikimić and Marija Ilić) conducted field research in the settlement of Medina from 6–10 December 2002, when interviews were recorded with practically all residents of the local Serbian-speaking community. The following year, in December 2003, Biljana Sikimić and Marija Ilić worked in the Hungarian part of Baranja, in the settlements of Vilan, Magyarboja, Lipova, Mohács, and one interview was recorded in Santovo. Fieldwork in Hungary continued after a few years with individual research when Marija Ilić, in 2008, worked again in Çip on completing the material for her doctoral dissertation, as well as in the Serbian communities in Szentendre, Čobanec and Lovra, but also with the “Rác” community in Tukulja. All team research was carried out thanks to the material and organizational support of the Serbian Self-Government in Budapest and the Self-Government of Serbs in Hungary. The initially planned results (the production of an ethnolinguistic monograph) have not been realized to date, but the existing archived field materials would enable its relatively quick production. Namely, the process of digitizing all field recordings by the team of the Balkanology Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts has been completed, and the entire digitized audio material (as well as new material that has been recorded exclusively in digital format for several years) was placed on the external disk of the Balkanology Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts during the summer of 2010 and is available to all users of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts network.

- Keywords:Serbs in Hungary; ethnomusicological research; Tihomir Vujicic; fieldwork; bibliography; revitalization of traditional music
- Summary/Abstract:Apart from comprehensive ethnomusicological research into vocal, vocal-instrumental and instrumental melodies of Serbs in Hungary, conducted by Tihomir Vujicic, systematic field studies of Serbian musical tradition in this area have not been conducted. Of particular interest is the fact of the long-term presence of Serbs in these regions. New field research is necessary, with the aim of getting to know the current state and noticing possible forms of change. It is necessary to compile a bibliography of works that contain at least data on the musical tradition of Serbs in Hungary, a comprehensive inventory of existing musical and sound recordings, as well as the digitization of sound material. A significant segment of the work can be considered support for a practical approach to recorded material and its revitalization in the field itself.

- Summary/Abstract:At the initiative of Slovak intellectuals from Békéscsaba, the Association of Slovaks in Hungary founded the Slovak Research Institute in Hungary (Výskumný ústav Slovákov v Maďaršku) in this city in 1990. This institution was the first among the scientific institutions of national minorities in the country. Since 2001, the Research Institute has belonged to the Slovak Self-Government, which guarantees its budgetary financing. The Research Institute is an institution for interdisciplinary social research. The most important areas of research are history, cultural anthropology, sociology, ethnography, pedagogy and sociolinguistics. The associates of this interdisciplinary social research center study the tradition, history, cultural history and current state of the Slovak language in Hungary over the past 300 years, and in addition, they analyze those social processes that concern the current minority status of Slovaks in Hungary, primarily church and social life, national and ethnic identity; they also study the history and cultural history of those regions in Hungary inhabited by Slovaks. Within the scope of the activities of this Institute, the ethnographic program is of great importance, which is largely realized through the work of ethnographic camps. These camps have been organized since 1977 every or every other year in Slovak settlements, and the participants have the task of processing various aspects of ethnographic heritage in an appropriate environment. This text describes in detail the organization, activities, and presentation of the results of the camps through various publications, from native studies to larger analyses and syntheses of the folk culture of Slovaks in Hungary.
