Summary/Abstract: The Serbian Institute in Budapest was founded in 2009 with the aim of assisting, encouraging and organizing scientific research on the past and present social reality of Serbs in Hungary. One of the most important scientific fields in which research is being carried out, or has been carried out, regarding Serbs in Hungary is ethnology. Despite the importance of this field, in our opinion, there are numerous shortcomings in the results and systematization of ethnological research on Serbs in Hungary to date. Starting from personal motivations to the motivations of the Serbian community in Hungary, we will try to provide an overview of areas within ethnology, as well as border areas of related sciences in which there are gaps or in which it is expected that further necessary research will be able to be carried out in the organization of the Serbian Institute in Budapest (from documentation, description and/or collection and analysis of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to research into traditional and contemporary life in both rural and urban areas). This “map” or “register” of research can serve as a kind of roadmap for further work in ethnology, in the hope of reaching a synthesis of the ethnology of Serbs in Hungary that is also accessible to public education.
