Summary/Abstract: The seeds for this collection of essays were sown at a conference in Plovdiv at the end of 2019. The conference, “E.T.A. Hoffmann in Bulgaria”, was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the publication of Hoffmann’s novella Little Zaches Called Cinnabar (1819), which – strangely, or perhaps completely naturally – became very popular in Bulgaria and has even been adapted for stage and screen. The little monstrous creature Zaches, who reaps the praises for other people’s work as well as the rewards, even became a used word in our political talk at times of crises and social turmoil. That was why it was completely appropriate that Hoffmann should “visit” Bulgaria in 2019, for the 200th anniversary of his novella.

- Summary/Abstract:This essay focuses on one of the adaptations of Hoffmann’s novella Little Zaches Called Cinnabar – an adaptation that has eluded the attention of readers as well as critics: the magic play for children Little Zaches by K. Talburg (1868). The article compares and contrasts the original and the later adaptation, and examines the reasons behind the differences. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the literary merit of Talburg’s play as compared to Hoffmann’s original text.

- Summary/Abstract:The article deals with the first theatre interpretation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s text in Bulgaria – the production Phantasmagorias (1988) after Little Zaches Called Cinnabar („Klein Zaches genannt Zinnober“), created by Teddy Moskov, one of the leading figures in the emblematic generation of stage directors that appeared around the mid-1980s to become the agent of rejecting the established ideologised conventions in the theatre practices of that period as well as of the Bulgarian theatre’s renewal during the 1990s, following the political change of 1989. Teddy Moskov based the performance on his own adaptation of Hoffmann’s novella and he staged two more shows on it with the same title in the next fifteen years – in 1989 and 2004. The study makes a comparative analysis of the three productions in terms of their political messages and their theatrical language. It focuses on the director’s aesthetics of improvisation and clowning, which has found a vivid manifestation in his stage productions of Hoffmann’s text.

- Summary/Abstract:E.T.A. Hoffmann, in his totality of biographical facts, as well as literary, musical, and critical legacy, represents a strange and elusive phenomenon. A complicated emanation of Romanticism, he embodies the conflict between biography, normativity, creativity, and skepticism; between a strenuous life, social ambitions, artistic strivings, and philistine prudence; between reality, fantasy, reflexivity, and collective stereotypes. The perception that, with Hoffmann, Romanticism is elevated to extremes that auger the inevitability of its suicidal self-subversion – self-drowning, self-strangulation – has long been a commonplace. By rereading Little Zaches Called Cinnabar, I attempt to extend and develop this understanding in a two-pronged approach: first I examine Romanticism as a type of aesthetic revolution, which devours even its most reflexively ironic children, such as Napoleon, Beethoven, and E.T.A. Hoffmann himself, by reexamining them through the allegorical image of Zaches-Cinnabar; then I test the hypothesis that the attempt to decipher this allegory inevitably draws it into insoluble contradictions, primarily between liberalism and conservatism, which get reduced to trivial aesthetic and social clichés, structurally levelling every authentic Romantic and Modernistic impulse down to dead high classics or suicidal malformation. Thus, Little Zaches Called Cinnabar appears as an allegory of Romanticism as an authentic and therefore suicidal Modernism, which offers the alternative between the classics (Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Delibes, etc.) and obscurity, i.e. E.T.A. Hoffmann himself. Finally, I speculate over the cultural prophecy of the fairy tale.

- Summary/Abstract:In her short story collection Strange Encounters, GDR writer Anna Seghers addresses the literary and political questions raised in the debate about the expressionism of the 1930s. After WW2, Kafka’s name became crucial in the ideological conflict for the German literary heritage. Seghers’s answers took years to shape up. Only in 1972 did she express openly, through fiction, her reflections on the dynamic European contexts that were the backdrop of the theories of realism in literature at the time of the Cold War – she arranged for a fictional meeting of such emblematic figures as Hoffmann and Gogol in the Parisian café where Kafka used to write.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper focuses on an episode from the reception of E.T.A. Hoffmann in France, namely the way in which he was taken up and interpreted by Sarah Kofman who wrote a series of essays on him during the 1970s. Unlike Nancy and Lacoue-Labarthe’s work on Friedrich Schlegel or Paul de Man’s analyses of Kleist and Wordsworth, Sarah Kofman’s work on Romanticism is not much discussed and yet I claim that it sheds a new light on the importance of German Romanticism for deconstruction. The paper reconstructs Kofman’s theory of doubles (Doppelgänger) as it is built up in her writings on Hoffmann, differentiating between the narcissist double, the uncanny double and the ironic double. The last part of the paper takes up the figure of Hoffmann’s tomcat Murr and its interpretation by Kofman in an attempt to sketch a self-reflexive problematization indicated by deconstruction.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper I trace aesthetic and cultural-historical interactions between British Gothic literature and German black Romanticism phenomena in terms of cultural transfer. Focus of the study is the analysis of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novel The Devil’s Elixirs and its comparison with Matthew G. Lewis’s The Monk. Works by Horace Walpole, Anne Radcliffe, Walter Scott, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Grosse, and others outline their Gothic context. The analysis traces the work of the verbal, fantastic and visual code in the two novels and their synaesthetic interlocking, characteristic of the German author. The comparison is made on the levels of character, plot, intertext, genre, ethics, etc. Along with the Gothic, in The Elixirs I highlight elements of the Bildungsroman and the Trivialroman. Also the motive of the double and instances of metafiction are analyzed in it. In the course of writing, works by E. Blackall, L. Doležel, R. Godal, M. Foucault, T. Todorov, and others were applied.

Instead of a so called “symptomatic” reading, here the focus is put on the narrative strategies and the plot construction in the German author’s fictional texts. - Summary/Abstract:This essay draws parallels between Hoffmann’s novella The Sandman and comparable images in the texts of the English Romantics. The clash between imagination and reality is in the limelight but the Gothic shadows of fear creep in as well: the relationship with women is one source of anxiety, and another one is the relationship with superior powers. Is man a master of ceremony in life or rather a puppet on strings? With the help of Romantic storytelling that involves changing points of view, Hoffmann celebrates ambivalence and leaves the readers to make up their own minds.

- Summary/Abstract:On the one hand, this article demonstrates how E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novel The Devil’s Elixirs follows the iconography of the Gothic novel and the examples set by the so-called Dark Romanticism, while, on the other hand, it points out how it sets a parodic distance between them. The motives for such a reading fill the text with meaning that is characteristic of the Gothic novel in combination with the self-reflective narration, as well as the quirky speech of some characters, especially Euphemia and Pietro Belcampo. The Bulgarian translation of the novel by Panayot Chinkov sticks as close as possible to the language of the original, thus offering readers the opportunity to perceive The Devil’s Elixirs as a sensational popular read, as well as a work that relativises fictional methods from the Romantic period.

- Summary/Abstract:The following paper examines the fluctuation of the concept of the uncanny between literature and psychoanalysis. In shaping the concept, both Ernst Jentsch in “On the Psychology of the Uncanny” (1906) and Sigmund Freud in “The Uncanny” (1919) carefully read Hoffmann’s fantastic stories of automata. While Freud develops his theory of the uncanny (concerning the automatism of unconscious repetition) by reading The Sandman, Jentsch dwells on Automata in his discussion of intellectual uncertainty. In this paper I also discuss anthropomorphic machines and the idea of the uncanny valley in robotics, concluding that the notion of the uncanny always involves negative anagnorisis, or misrecognition between inside/outside; human/automaton; animate/inanimate.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper explores aspects of the personality split and the doubling in The Sandman, a novella by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Mysteries, a novel by Knut Hamsun. It indicates the traits that bring the two authors together in spite of them belonging to different periods and different schools. The overall split of Hoffmann’s protagonist Nathanael is analyzed as a reason for his unhappy love and a prerequisite for his madness. The split, in its different aspects, is connected to the leading motives in Hamsun’s works – alienation and queerness. The doubling in Hoffmann’s novella is more highlighted and clear, while in Hamsun it remains subtle. In this sense, in Hamsun we can provisionally speak about doubling based on the alienation from others and the similar role that the characters play in the community.

- Summary/Abstract:Writers from the period of German Romanticism used to glamourize the past, which is strongly reminiscent of the contemporary idealization of the old times. Similar to the Romantic period, our time tends to avoid reality by using irrational ideas and practices. Although both phenomena seem to have many similarities, they have different roots and the comparisons between them are extremely questionable. The essay focuses on conservatism as the leading ideology of German Romanticism and aims to examine the Marxist thesis that Romantic literature has a reactionary character. The analysis of Hoffmann’s Klein Zaches uses Tsvetan Todorov’s concept of the fantastic to prove this thesis.

- Summary/Abstract:The two main pillars of modernity, revealing both its material and spiritual essence, are the technical progress, on the one hand, and the aesthetic turn in art, on the other hand. The multiple manifestations of these two aspects of the progress of humanity are diverse in nature. On the surface, it looks as if they have nothing in common. In literature, however, they bond and entwine. The examples which this article focuses on, are two texts, greatly differing in genre and written decades apart from one another, in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, respectively: „Des Vetters Eckfenster“ (My Cousin’s Corner Window) by Hoffmann and Triëdere (Binoculars) by Robert Musil. The optical “provision” in the two texts, the lorgnette in Hoffmann’s story and the Triëder (binoculars) in Musil’s essay, creates an exceptionally intriguing aesthetic challenge, unveiling the way we perceive the world beyond the visible.

- Summary/Abstract:The theatrical and film adaptations of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s works in Bulgaria are not that many. In the period 1989 – 2010, there are six of them, four among which are stage plays which are basically different versions of the same play, a puppet theatre play which states “based on Hoffmann,” and a single film. That which combines them, and which is very curious to academics, is that all six of them use the plot of Hoffmann’s Little Zaches Called Cinnabar as a basis. But why Zaches? This article seeks to offer possible answers to this very question.

In this case, the “Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann in Bulgaria” International Interdisciplinary Academic Forum in Plovdiv serves as an example of the unifying force of the great European minds across the centuries. It also demonstrates how Hoffmann’s German work from 200 years ago finds a home in an ancient “European Capital of Culture” – in this case, the city of Plovdiv.
