Summary/Abstract: This essay draws parallels between Hoffmann’s novella The Sandman and comparable images in the texts of the English Romantics. The clash between imagination and reality is in the limelight but the Gothic shadows of fear creep in as well: the relationship with women is one source of anxiety, and another one is the relationship with superior powers. Is man a master of ceremony in life or rather a puppet on strings? With the help of Romantic storytelling that involves changing points of view, Hoffmann celebrates ambivalence and leaves the readers to make up their own minds.
