Summary/Abstract: The text explores the connection between E.T.A. Hoffmann’s literary work and the trivial (mainly Gothic) novel from the second half of the 18 century. Instead of a so called “symptomatic” reading, here the focus is put on the narrative strategies and the plot construction in the German author’s fictional texts. The conclusion is that Hoffmann creatively borrows certain fundamental techniques from popular literature in order to express the Romantic concept of the controversial unity between literature and life.
