Summary/Abstract: On the one hand, this article demonstrates how E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novel The Devil’s Elixirs follows the iconography of the Gothic novel and the examples set by the so-called Dark Romanticism, while, on the other hand, it points out how it sets a parodic distance between them. The motives for such a reading fill the text with meaning that is characteristic of the Gothic novel in combination with the self-reflective narration, as well as the quirky speech of some characters, especially Euphemia and Pietro Belcampo. The Bulgarian translation of the novel by Panayot Chinkov sticks as close as possible to the language of the original, thus offering readers the opportunity to perceive The Devil’s Elixirs as a sensational popular read, as well as a work that relativises fictional methods from the Romantic period.
