Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on an unexplored issue exemplified by the particular reference to time, specifically to hours and calendar dates, in the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann. Special attention is paid to the distinctive manner in which the writer denominates the Christian feasts as well as to his marked preference for certain hours of the day as temporal landmarks for the narrative. The presentation offers a hypothesis for rationalizing those artistic whimsicalities by means of systematic contextualizations.
