Summary/Abstract: Writers from the period of German Romanticism used to glamourize the past, which is strongly reminiscent of the contemporary idealization of the old times. Similar to the Romantic period, our time tends to avoid reality by using irrational ideas and practices. Although both phenomena seem to have many similarities, they have different roots and the comparisons between them are extremely questionable. The essay focuses on conservatism as the leading ideology of German Romanticism and aims to examine the Marxist thesis that Romantic literature has a reactionary character. The analysis of Hoffmann’s Klein Zaches uses Tsvetan Todorov’s concept of the fantastic to prove this thesis.
