Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on an episode from the reception of E.T.A. Hoffmann in France, namely the way in which he was taken up and interpreted by Sarah Kofman who wrote a series of essays on him during the 1970s. Unlike Nancy and Lacoue-Labarthe’s work on Friedrich Schlegel or Paul de Man’s analyses of Kleist and Wordsworth, Sarah Kofman’s work on Romanticism is not much discussed and yet I claim that it sheds a new light on the importance of German Romanticism for deconstruction. The paper reconstructs Kofman’s theory of doubles (Doppelgänger) as it is built up in her writings on Hoffmann, differentiating between the narcissist double, the uncanny double and the ironic double. The last part of the paper takes up the figure of Hoffmann’s tomcat Murr and its interpretation by Kofman in an attempt to sketch a self-reflexive problematization indicated by deconstruction.
