Summary/Abstract: In her short story collection Strange Encounters, GDR writer Anna Seghers addresses the literary and political questions raised in the debate about the expressionism of the 1930s. After WW2, Kafka’s name became crucial in the ideological conflict for the German literary heritage. Seghers’s answers took years to shape up. Only in 1972 did she express openly, through fiction, her reflections on the dynamic European contexts that were the backdrop of the theories of realism in literature at the time of the Cold War – she arranged for a fictional meeting of such emblematic figures as Hoffmann and Gogol in the Parisian café where Kafka used to write.
