Method and Theory: On the Compilation of a Collection of Texts in Estonian Translation History

Translation history is a part of cultural history and a necessary component of any literary history, but documenting it may prove to be a challenge. The present article is an attempt to describe and exemplify an ongoing project of mapping Estonian translation history through metatexts on translational issues based on the writings of translators, editors and other figures close to translation throughout Estonian literary history. The reason for collecting translational thought into one compilation lies in the importance of translation for Estonian culture both retrospectively as well as keeping in mind the future of translation and language policies and practices. The article is thematically divided into two parts. The first part is concerned with the analysis of already existing methodologies for compiling translation histories. Still, in order to get a comprehensive picture, different angles have to be considered and different methodologies applied on the material that has come down to us. Thus, what follows is the description of the ongoing project and its slightly different, empirics driven methodology. The second part of the paper gives an insight into one of the seven major topics that have emerged from the work with the texts in Estonian translation history. It is based on the discussions whether practitioners need theory, or more generally, what is translation theory and who needs it? The examples are taken from the articles and interviews with Estonian practicing translators and people close to translation such as literary critics, editors, etc. and cover the second half of the 20th century up to the contemporary times. Our aim was to show practitioners as theorists and thus narrow the gap between theory and practice of translation which has proved to be a general problem also in other cultural settings, end even currently when translation studies has established itself as a discipline. The issue has been discussed by many prominent translation studies scholars and the present article will take the opportunity to introduce their points of view.

Fetching Poems from Elsewhere: Ciaran Carson’s Translations of French Poetry

Ciaran Carson is a renowned Northern Irish poet with a distinguished record of translating poetry from Irish, Italian and French. This article focuses on his translation practice as evidenced in his three volumes of French poetry in translation: sonnets by Baudelaire, Mallarmé and Rimbaud; prose poems by Rimbaud; and poems by Jean Follain. Guided by the music, the matter, and the linguistic and ontological going-beyond of the originals, Carson variously ‘adapts’ prose poems to a rhyming alexandrine format, makes explicit use of derivation, shifts spatio-temporal perspective, and ‘doubles’ his French translations with English originals. Carson’s approach of ‘fetching’ poems from ‘elsewhere’ is assessed in the light of Meschonnic’s poetics of translation, which would define the overarching objective as producing new poems in English which do in English what the originals do in French. The analysis of Carson’s new poems is also informed by conceptualizations of creativity and originality arising from research in cognitive science, literary studies and critical theory. Carson’s practice of working under constraints suggested by the original poems and exploiting possibilities offered by and between the two languages leads to an expressive plurality that unsettles notions of source and target language. His translation artefacts and commentaries are examined for the light they shed on originality and derivation; writing and translating; the subjectivity of the translator; and the relationship between original poem and new poem.

Semiosic translation: A new theoretical framework for the implementation of pedagogically-oriented subtitling

In this paper, I explore a new type of semiotic translation in the context of Audiovisual Translation Studies (AVTS). To that end, a set of formulaic sequences bestowed of pragmalinguistic value (hedging strings) is analysed. It is argued that the semiotic analysis of conversational features in English may contribute to facilitate their pedagogical exploitation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms.This analysis builds theoretically on a semiotic translational framework termed Semiosic Translation (and its subset, Semiosic Subtitling) predicated upon three types of translation: (i) Metaleptic translation; (ii) indexical translation; and (iii) translation as dynamic discontinuity. The translational rationale thus arrived at is deemed to account for what it is that binds together linguistic signs with other sign systems.

Perhaps a translation history focused on translations by different hands of the disparate writings of the same author is not the right kind of test case for semiotranslation? Perhaps what we need instead is a series of translations of the same text? Aft er all, the idea behind semiotranslation is translation as semiosis – and that can be read as translations getting “better” in the aggregate, over time. So for our second round of semiotranslational testing, let us examine the first two Finnish translations of Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” arguably the key translated text for the importation of modernism to Finland. As far as I can tell, the poem has been translated into Finnish five times, by Leo Tiainen in 1949 (Eliot 1949), by Ville Repo in 1956 (Eliot 1956), by Ville Repo again (revising his own 1956 translation) in 1992 (Eliot 1992), by Pekka Sauri in 1995 (Eliot 1995), and by Juha Silvo in 2009 (Eliot 1995); it will suffice for our purposes here to look mainly at the first two, with only an occasional glance at a later version.

Но оно продолжало жить, обнаруживая себя в лучшие времена (ср.: О. Мандельштам и некоторые другие поэты, преимущественно петербургские, того же времени). К сожалению, поэзия Батюшкова до сих пор не стала предметом обстоятельного исследования и не получила должной оценки, независимой от взглядов Пушкина, Белинского и других по необходимости пристрастных критиков.

We propose here to study proverbial equivalence as a solution to paremiological translation between two languages-cultures evolving in close socio-cultural environments: Kabyle and Algerian dialectal Arabic. Our corpus consists mainly on paremiological works. We will first begin with an attempt to define the concept of proverb as part of the linguistic approach to paremiology, and then, based on the proverb theory as denomination of George KLEIBER (1999), we will attempt to answer the following question: what types of paremiological equivalence could there be between two languages-cultures evolving in close socio-cultural and geographical environments? We will distinguish precisely three types (BERKAI, 2015) : the perfect heteronymy, the simple heteronymy and the partial heteronymy corresponding in lexicon to the absolute synonymy, the parasynonymy and the partial synonymy, to which we will add the “anheteronymy”, that is to say the absence of equivalence.

This paper presents different approaches to the concept of authenti- city in the context of applied linguistics and foreign language teaching. For decades, this term has been associated only with language material used in the classroom (reductionist definition), but recent studies highlight its conceptual diversification and conclude that it is determined by other, mostly contextual factors, as well as participants in interaction. Therefore, in modern approaches to foreign language teaching, the emphasis is on a dynamic and integrated approach to the concept of authenticity (Newby, 2000), where genuine input and genuine participatory tasks promoted by teachers generate students’ genuine output who thus authenticate them in the process of interaction that is situationally determined. Consequently, as a result, the notion of authenticity is reconceptualized: it is no longer an absolute category but can be considered as a pragmatic phenomenon (Shomoossi & Ketabi 2007) and a construct generated in the socio-contextual continuum (Pinner 2014, 2016), so it is viewed holistically and applies to various aspects and actors in the process of foreign language learning.

In this study we examined the concept of “truth (ἀλήθεια)” in “Republic”, which belongs to the mature period of Plato’s authorship and “Laws”, which belongs to his late period, and tried to clarify the philosopher’s understanding of “truth”. The concept of ἀλήθεια is one of the concepts that is examined and discussed through the whole history of philosophy and especially in the ancient philosophy. According to Plato, the main aim of human beings and gods is to search for the good, to find it and to live in accordance with it. The highest good is the truth and to achieve it one must walk through a hard and laboring way. In Plato’s philosophy ἀλήθεια that possess divine features, is one of the basic concepts of world of ideas and human beings can only comprehend totally what reflects the truth. While Plato construct the republic and the laws in a hypothetical fashion, he aims to justify his assumptions on the ground of truth, because if the main aim is to achieve the truth, he could not make an exception for “Republic” and “Laws”. Moreover, in this study we also tried to scrutinize some problems about the translation of the concept of ἀλήθεια like the loss of the original meaning in the source text.

he tradition of presenting eulogy to the sultan, which was common in Turkic-Islamic societies, is not only related to poets' desire to gain rank and gifts but also has strong religious foundations. Firstly because the Prophet Muhammad liked Qaṣīda al-Burda, he gifted his mantle to the poet Ka‘b b. Zuhayr (d. 24/645). Hereafter the sultans, regarded as the khalīfa of Islam, always supported the poets to comply with the prophetic traditions (sunna). Thus the tradition of presenting eulogy to the sultan as showing devotion became widespread among poets. There are verses in the Qurʾān that point to the political relations between the governor and the governed in the world order. Accordingly, the governors are responsible for ensuring justice and serving their people. Also, the obedience of the governed people to the governors is a religious obligation for peace and stability. The reign (salṭanat) is of divine origin and obedience to the sultan is obedience to God and his Messenger. According to the widespread religious-sufistic view, the salṭanat is divided into two parts: a. Salṭanat-ı ẓāhir (the real reign) is that the lawful sultan reigned. b. Salṭanat-ı bāṭin (spiritual reign) is that bestowed on the patron saint (quṭb). The lawful sultan and the quṭb are religious heirs of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s), the most perfect human. So, there is a spiritual connection between the quṭb and the lawful sultan of each era and the quṭb helps the sultan with the support of God. It should be noted that such statements are a reference to the politicalspiritual union in the structure of the state. Ottoman sultans represented the caliphate model fermented with sufistic thought. In the Ottoman state tradition depending on the religious-sufistic sources quṭb-sultan relationship was considered important. The desire of every sultan to establish an affiliation with the most famous Sufis is a result of this relationship. The Ottoman people also respected the sultans, whom they saw as the last guardians of the world order (niẓām al-ʿālam). This is not the imposition of the sultan on the public but is a natural formation reflecting the agreement between the sultan and his people. Thus the legitimacy of the Ottoman sultanate had been supported by Walâyah and menākıbnames since the establishment of the state. For example, Sulṭān Bāyezīd II was known as a saint (walī) in public with his legends. But the sultans were aware that exaggerated expressions such as quṭb, mahdi in the odes were used to refer to the political-spiritual unity. With this awareness the Ottoman sultans always made an effort to protect the scholars and artists to show the power of their reign, to make their effects permanent and to gain the support of their people. Therefore, the entertainment assemblies of the sultans, most of whom were good poets, calligraphers and musicians since their princedom, had always been the most important art gatherings where especially poets and musicians exhibited their skills. Being an artist and an art-loving leader Bāyezīd II generously patronized scholars, artists, and especially poets from all over the world during his princedom in Amasya and his reign (r. 886-918/1481-1512). While he was in Amasya, he was with poets Zeynep, Mihrī, Necātī Beg, Müeyyedzāde, Hātemī, Tācizāde Cafer etc. He was a professional calligrapher, poet and composer. His nickname ʿAdlī (lawful) was appropriate to his activities: During his reign, with the spread of justice and prosperity, the peace and stability of the society increased; there had been a great development in arts, especially literature and music. The official notebook includes registers of the gifts given to the poets during the reign of Sulṭān Bāyezīd II. There are not only famous poets such as Necātī, Ḥamdī, Revānī, Firdevsī-i Rūmī, Mihrī, Ẕātī, İdris-i Bitlisī, Şerīfī, Mesīḥī but also many unknown poets in the notebook such as Nūḥī, Keşfī, Ṣafāyī, ʿAzīzī, Ṣabāyī, Mā’ilī, Sā’ilī, Rūḥī, Şehdī, Kātibī, Saʿyī, Refīḳī, Lālī, Naṣībī, ʿİyānī, Yarḥiṣārī, Vaṣfī, Müşterī, Viṣālī, Sinānī, Nişānī, Şefīʿī, Żamīrī, Nāṭıḳī, Edībī, Ḥadīdī, Baṣīrī. One of the poets mentioned in the book is poet Jawharī. In this article, the religious-sufistic background of poets’ tradition of presenting odes is explained and the determinations are made about unknown poet Jawharī’s life and his new poems’ literary value, linguistic and stylistic features of the poems translated.

The report is about the reception of Dagmar Mária Anoca’s literary work in Slovak Vojvodina context, mainly according to bibliographical review of her books in the magazine for literature and culture Nový život, and a few key studies about her and the places where her work is reflected. D. M. Anoca is present in Slovak Vojvodina context mostly as a poet and literary scientist. According to cultural and literal municipality in Vojvodina, she is regarded as a university pedagogue, a writer for children, a linguist, a theorist, a cultural agent, a persistent researcher of literature, cultural activity, and history of Romanian Slovaks and Slovaks living in southern parts from Slovakia, and recently as a translator from Romanian language, too. The main focus was on her poetic work, followed by poetry for children, linguistic and literary-historic work, while the reception of prose work in Slovak Vojvodina context was missing at the time of the publishing.

Brothers Constantine, with monk name Cyril, and his older brother Michael, commonly known by his monk name Methodius, make a mark in the history of the Slavic peoples as the creators of the Slavic alphabet (the so-called Glagolitic alphabet with 38 letters) and the first Slavic literary language, called Old Church Slavonic. The brothers Cyril and Methodius became known also by their literary work (chiefly translations), which began at the initiative of the Prince Rostislav of Great Moravia and upon the instruction of the Byzantine Emperor Michael III. The two brothers are credited with taking part in the founding of a literary school in the territory of Great Moravia. The works written there are for the most part of religious character and they are of high theological and stylistic quality. Before coming to Great Moravia, Cyril translated the so-called Evangelion, the Gospel Book containing the texts of the Gospels read on Sundays and holidays. They include the first chapter of the Gospel according to John. He also translated the complete order of events observed during the service, based on the Byzantine liturgy. Methodius edited the translation of the Old and New Testament, without the Books of the Maccabees. The Books of the Gospel translated by Cyril and Methodius into the Slavic language were approved by the Pope Adrian II who placed them on the altar in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and sanctified them. Concurrently with the approval of the Slavic books, the first Liturgy in the Slavic language was served in Rome. According to the Czech Slavicist František Václav Mareš, the brothers Cyril and Methodius are the authors of 18 works, out of which 8 are original and 10 are translations, mainly of religious literature but also legal and administrative texts. The literary work (both translations and original works) of the brothers Cyril and Methodius is characterized by admirable content as well as high artistic and linguistic quality. It represents the cornerstone of the Slavic literature from which literature of other Slavic peoples has developed.

The present article attempts to study the personality of Ivan Vazov as a perceiver of Western European literature. Vazov’s works are representative of the tendencies which started during the Bulgarian National Revival period, tendencies toward overcoming cultural backwardness and inclusion of Bulgarian literature in the European tradition. He devoted a great part of his literary and public activity to this cultural cause. In his body of work, Vazov accumulated the ideas of cultural catching up, distilled the best of the European experience, summarised it, and integrated it. The inclusion of Vazov’s works in the European literary tradition can be traced in the various modes of his communication with the national literatures of Western Europe – as a reader, translator, compiler, critic, editor, and author. Emphasising the Western influence in his work, he pointed out his models, constantly comparing himself to them, borrowing themes and motifs, genres and means of expression. Vazov managed to develop as an author of his own time – relevant to the native ideological and cultural context, but integrating the European literary achievements in his work.

Physical characterization in written works are external indicators associated with content. Many features of the structure such as the number of lines and columns of the written work, the special markings of the manuscript, the font, the paper, the volume, the appearance, the numbering of the leaves, the title of the book, the ink, the place where the book was written, its history, the name of the author/copyer, illustration of the book, etc.; supporting the subject discussed in the work and expressing its context and order. The term cönk is first a concept related to the appearance of the book. The texts inside cönk are the reason for its existence. With its structure, content and context features, cönks are a means of disseminating and preserving information that contributes to the history of culture. In the study, 06 Mil Yz Cönk is registered at number 25 in the National Library Manuscripts Collection; In order to contribute to the text studies, the order in the folk books written to be explained was emphasized and at the end of the study, a transcription translation of the poetry texts on The Reaper and the Arab Pilgrim's Parable and The Advice was given. The aim of the study is to; although it usually does not have a standard in itself in matters related to copy characteristics such as measurement, unity, number of lines, etc. in folk books, which can also be expressed as "irregular" and written to be explained; to assess that it is not brought together completely indiscriminately. The writing works, which are described as folk types and created to tell stories, have a pattern within themselves according to their context and functions. In this context, cönks; structure, content and context features will be examined from the "Inscriptive" point of view. With this work, folk-type texts contained in manuscripts and organized for narrative are put together for a specific purpose; In the issue of classification of folk texts, it was intended to emphasize the necessity of taking into account the characteristics of the binding.

The historical and geographical homeland of Mihai Eminescu was and is an island in the Slavonic world. The spiritual homeland of his literary creation has been and continues to be the liaison of approach and osmosis with the Slavonic peoples’ literatures, as it proved to be also with the literatures and cultures of more than 250 states and territories of modern world. The universalization process of Eminescu’s creation at European level had been unleashed by a glorious event in epoch, occurred during the poet’s life time, in full ascent of his creative poetic and journalistic genius. In 1881, 30 of his lyrical gems were included in „Rumänische Dictungen”, an anthological volume which appeared in some editions in Leipzig and Bonn, at the same time reproduced in other volumes and magazines, popolarized in the whole Germany, taken over and favourably commented in Italy, France, Austria, Hungary, but also in Romania, with echoes in New York, Chicago, St.Petersburg, Warsaw, Sofia. The first events of Eminescu’s reception in the Slavonic literary world occurred, naturally, in the Russian literature. Even during the poet’s life time and during the following period, the encyclopedic publications and those of the university academic milieu synthetize the data spread in the European literary world at the end and at the beginning of the new century about the European value of the Romanian poet’s work, so that one of the famous world literary science, Acad. Feodor Korsh from the Moscow University recognizes, according to the phylological exigencies, ”a special perfection in shape and a great height in reflection”, proved in 1901 by his own posthumous sonnet, ”However much stars”, by this marking the beginning of universalization process of his works value, until nowadays identified in Russia in more than 100 volumes (separate editions and anthologies) and 50 periodicals, 1596 translations and 271 critical references (volumes, studies and articles), among which substantial syntheses in 23 encyclopaedias and 8 doctor’s papers. The performances in the act of translation during the latest decades have promoted a new idea in the modern Eminescology, according to which for Eminescu’s oneness it can be created and it was created a specific poetic language, Eminescian, successful in many of the Russian translations realized during the latest decades. Even from the end of the XIXth century, in the other Slavonic literatures the presence of Eminescu has been a phenomenon which stimulated the proper native creative potential. In Bulgary the estimation to be acknowledged as ”the most representative genius of Balcanic peoples” has been proved by 30 volume and more than 30 periodicals promoting him with 224 translations and more than 40 critical references. In Poland, as a national poet of universal value he was acknowledged first in 4 encyclopaedias, proved until now with 32 volume and 40 periodicals which published 208 translations and 60 references, and in Serbia to be published in 23 volume and 20 periodicals including 238 translations, commented in 60 papers, the significance of reception beeng proved also in Ukraina with 326 translations and 66 references, in Czech Republic with 97 translations and 30 papers, in Croatia with 50 translations and 7 papers, in Slovakia, Slovenia and Byelorussia with more than 150 translations and 15 critical references. These quantitative data allow a mathematical evaluation of translations quality in Slavonic languages, as far as these are more or less near the Romanian original.

Compensation and Kin Selection in the Long Nineteenth Century Translationscapes

Using network models and quantitative methods, the present article provides a bird’s-eye-view of the Romanian novelistic translationscape published in volumes during the “long 19th century”. The study approaches the cultural production of translated novels in the selected period from a relational perspective, aiming to investigate the connections between different publishers, with their respective editorial practices, and the translated authors selected from both major and minor source cultures. With this in mind, our paper will attempt not only to analyze the actor-network aspect of the translational networks established in the country, but also to provide an interpretive model for the selection of specific translated authors over others and their role in the cultural and nation-building process of early-modern Romanian culture.
