The main theme of this article centers on the international contests in Informatics. The article details the key events preceding the initiation and organization of the First International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), held in Bulgaria in 1989, and provides supporting documentation. The path, leading to this Olympiad and the events between the First National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) and the First IOI are discussed as well. An outline of the international contests in informatics held in Sofia (1987), Bratislava (1987), Varna (1988), and Nova Gorica (1988) is offered. In the beginning of 1989, in Netherlands, UNESCO held a consultative meeting to discuss various issues related to international Olympiads. The invited participants were the leaders of the well-established International Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The author was invited to introduce the Olympiads in Informatics and to present the plan for the organization and inauguration of the First IOI in Bulgaria. Next the paper discusses the progress of our talented students, winners of the Bulgarian NOIs. Subsequently, a few, as university students, participated in the world’s most reputable completion - the ACM International Collegiate Contest (ACM ICPC). There is a brief presentation of the student team from Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski”, which participated in this contest in 1996 and placed first in Europe and fourth overall, among the 1001 teams from universities around the world. Due to its factual nature, the article contains an extensive list of references, including text excerpts, citations, photos, and other relevant materials, supporting the historical facts related to the competitions in Informatics.

The article makes an overview of the relevant aspects of teaching foreign languages for specific purposes at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia (Bulgaria), which is the economics and business school with the longest history in South-eastern Europe. It examines the different periods of foreign language teaching (FLT) at this hub of academic excellence, as special attention is paid to the different language sectors. Various scholarly studies, papers and articles have been given due analytical consideration. The research and academic achievements in teaching foreign languages for specific purposes at UNWE are seen as an integral part of the linguo-didactic archeology. In this respect various aspects of academic instruction in foreign languages have been explored against the background of the centenarian anniversary of the prestigious university that has been crowned with significant successes in the field of the national and world economy.

The focus of the article is on the new-old “weapons” of the triad power-control-capital, harnessed in the development of new geopolitical strategies and a new social, political and cultural engineering on global scale. Attempts to identify, define and decode them are complicated by infiltration of various new or forgotten old paradigms related to the legitimization of new or forgotten old “enemies”. The common feature between all these models, however, is the opposition of us against them (the Others), ours against theirs, us against us; the artificial generation of confrontations and zones of tensions between different types of protagonists and antagonists, the use, misuse and manipulation of the social anger, the strategical involvement of different players with different roles - representatives of corporations and monopolies, government regulatory bodies and state institutions, civil society activists and organizations.

This article aims to outline the main aspects of the cultural context in the test evaluation of students’ achievement and particularly in the international assessment studies. A few typical deviations in the process of creating test instrumentsare described, which could lead to unreliable results of students’ performance if the influence of different cultural characteristics is not recognized. The article focuses on some of the procedures used in the development and in the work on international studies such as PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS and ICCS to report on and minimize the impact of cultural influence on students’ achievements.

The paper explores the relation strategic thinking – metacognition –reflection in the context of the professional training programs of education majors.It revisits the idea of strategic thinking championed by an array of philosophersfrom Immanuel Kant through John Dewy to Martin Covington, who foregroundsthe issue from the point of view of education and student success. The latter is feasible only if clear criteria are available to the student as regards his/her capabilities, the complexity of the task and the resources employed in its resolution.In principle, this is a process of metacognition inasmuch as the student evaluates his/her own reasoning and professional reflection developed in the shape of self observation and self-cognition. Our assumption is that the most important condition for the utilization and realization of this relation is the language behavior of the student wherein language and idea, reasoning and questioning, doubt and argument validation coincide. The analysis is developed within the framework of Donald Davidson’s conception of reiterating the relation between language and act and that between language and mental processes as a network of convictions, attitudes and expectations.

Collected data were analyzed using content analysis and the findings were discussed in detail.

The author makes synopsis of some basic investigations, devoted to the reflection and synergetics, and presents experience on their combination by construction of the reflective-synergetic approach in the education. The relations between the organization, self-organization and reflexion are examined. The experimental work shows the positive effect of the combined use of the activities of creating and transforming mathematical problems on the formation and development, in reflective-synergetic plan of complex knowledge and skills in students to perform the basic activity - problem solving, which confirms the thesis: reflective-synergetic effect of the combined use of the triad is expressed in self-completion, completion of the various subsystems of the system of opportunities that forms both the learner and the teacher as self-organizing personalities.

The text presents opportunities to use digital media and technology when working with literary texts in teaching German as a foreign language. In this context is being discussed the importance of digital media and their hermeneutic and didactic useful properties (accessibility, multimediality/hypermediality, interactivity). Based on theoretical and methodological literature are presented different opportunities for using various electronic resources, educational materials, electronic applications, platforms, tools, functions, types of tasks. In this way we support the argument that didactic use of digital media complements and enriches the traditional repertoire of learning activities when working with foreign language literature texts. The goal is not only of building a common communication skills of those who study a foreign language, but also of stimulating their creative thinking and behavior, of building conscious and autonomous learners and developing aesthetic and media competence. The conclusion is that to achieve these goals in the current language learning practice through literature are mostly used the "accessibility" and "multimediality/hypermediality" properties of digital media. In recent times is often utilized and the "interactivity". The existing studies often try to comply both with innovative ways of teaching and communication, as well as aesthetic qualities of literary works.
