Koncept „szczęście” w języku rosyjskim na tle języków zachodnich

The article describes certain ways of understanding the meaning of the idea of happiness. Areas of philosophy and literature throughout the ages are being used for reference. Historical progress of the idea’s perception is shown from linguistic perspective — Russian and Polish are being compared as having similar attitude in the past, while contemporary use and meaning are illustrated using contrastive analysis of Russian and American, which present different approaches reflecting cultural and mental differences between those two societies these days. The author is basing on Wierzbicka’s and Zalizniak’s studies, claiming that approach similar to those two should be continued and developed focusing more on Polish language.

Mat, język, transformacja — nienormatywna leksyka w twórczości Wiktora Jerofiejewa

Mat is an integral part of Russian language, including also the literary language. For years, mat has been used to express artistic manifestoes as well as introducing new linguistic canons and standards. What is more, in the fi eld of literature this language was also a kind of a peculiar test of reader’s sensitivity. In the prose by Victor Erofeyev mat, however, plays much more important role. The writer uses it as an excellent literary material, a hero and treats it even as the co-author of his texts. Non-normative lexicon is no longer associated with the forbidden fruit. It acquired a new meaning as a part of the dialogue with the native language. The article shows different ways of using mat in essays, short stories and writer’s novels.

Mongolian word formation and Mongolian color names are considered a neglected field of study in Mongolistic literature. The aim of this paper is to find out if there is an affinity between certain lexical groups and specific word-forming suffixes. In order to answer this question, the author collected material on Mongolian word formation connected with color names. Of the 108 suffixes examined, 49 are used with color names and other lexical groups, and 59 are restricted to color names, that is, they show special affinity to a specific lexical group, namely, to color names.

The description of the plough in the Krsiparasara has been a puzzle for generations of Sanskrit philologists. What especially pained me was the disfunctional character of this description: among the eight essential parts the ploughshare was missing. The turning up of an until now unknown manuscript from The Library of Congress has brought a basic change: it contains the expected reading phalika “ploughshare” for pasika an otherwise meaningful term “rope” that could have been adjusted to the context only by rather strained explanations.

TRACES OF THE PEAR-TREE CULT IN THE CAUCASUS

Tree cult of the Turks has been practised for centuries, but cult under fruit trees like pear-tree has not been noticed. In this article traces of the pear-tree cult in the Caucasus is outlined. The Karachay-Balkar Turks living in the Caucasus denote pear with the word kertme, while it is not so in the majority of Turkic languages. This word was borrowed by Hungarians most probably around the Kuban river north to the Caucasus before the conquest of the Carpathian Basin, their later homeland. Hungarians might also have acquired the worship of the pear-tree that time and in that area, because already in the first written sources (in the form of family- and place names) it is well documented. Hints of the pear cult can also be seen in the children’s songs in connection with the ‘pear-tree’. We can state that the pear-tree cult was known in the Kuban region before 680-700 A.D., for the Hungarians left for Etelköz in those years and did not return there ever after.

К вопросу о межславянских лексических заимствованиях в русском приказном языке XVII века

The article examines the history of the following words found in diplomatic correspondence of Muscovite Russia of the 17th century: vstupan’e ‘entry (into); come into smth. (administration, possession); accession to the throne’, vygubiti ‘kill; exterminate, extirpate; destroy’, vyznan´e ‘confession; confirmation, evidence’, vymogati, vymoči ‘extort (from)’, vypuščen´e ‘release; liberation,’, vysvobož(d)en’e ‘liberation; discharge’, vysluchati ‘listen (to)’. The author aims at proving that these intraslavonic derivates are interslavonic borrowings/loanwords in the written Russian language of the second half of the 16th and 17th centuries. The article contains facts proving these words to be Polonisms in the Russian language and “prostaja mova”, the latter, in the author’s opinion, appeared to be the mediator when these words were being borrowed by the Russian language. The materials of the article considerably specify the chronology of vstupan´e, vymogati, vymoči, vypuščen´e in the Russian written language and it is the first time the words vyznan´e, vysluchati have been discovered in the monuments of the Russian written language by the author of this investigation.

The article addresses the problem of mutual influences between different verbal magic traditions in the Baltic-Slavonic frontier territories. It discusses the possible ways of borrowing of exorcisms from Baltic tradition into Slavonic and vice versa as revealed by the analysis of text structure. The article exposes some specific distinctions of Lithuanian, Belarusian, Russian and Polish exorcisms. The author analyses plot peculiarities of exorcisms, separate motives and magic formulas, as well as lexical borrowings. It is supposed, that lexical borrowings (transformed or preserved in unaltered form) have a particular supplementary semantic component — they are used to increase the expressiveness and efficiency of the magic text.

Taking his cue from the volume: G. Giraudo-G. Maniscalco Basile, Lessico politico, giuridico ed ecclesiastico della Russia del sedicesimo secolo, Roma, Herder, 1994, the author points out that the Muscovite political lexicon had the character of a verbal ritual, almost a liturgy of power. In particular, the author investigates the origins and the evolution of the term Car' and of the related terms. He also investigates the terms describing social articulation within both the State and the Church. He observes how the two hierarchies are parallel until the first half of the 17th century and subsequently they become intertwined. Moreover, the author criticizes the Soviet criterion of editing and interpreting medieval sources. He argues that the societal structure of Muscovite Rus' (a term that evokes a concept of tradition and legitimisation unlike the term Rossija which is more recent and without a sacral meaning) is organised solely on a vertical system of relationships.

I regarded the word librarioli, derived either from librarium ‘bookcase’ or from librarius ‘bookcopier’, in the diminutive form as suitable to appear in the title of an occasional collection, gathered together from mistakes (misunder-standings, slips) observable in the practice of copiers (note- and abstract-makers, commentators) at any time. Such a thing occurs not only in copying classical texts, in troubling and smile-provoking instances of the “Scholiastenweisheit”, in the mechanically borrowed and inattentively shortened interpretations of dictionaries in common use, in the superficialities of chroniclebreviators etc. Thus can be disfigured Scipio, “the African warrior” to Scaevola, burning his arm, thus can become one of the Carthaginian Hannos to a “Sicilian commander” on the one hand and the other one (the reckless discoverer) “to the head of the Carthaginian conservative party” on the other hand, etc. etc.

ROLA LEKSYKI W KSZTAŁTOWANIU KOMPETENCJI KOMUNIKACYJNEJ CUDZOZIEMCÓW (NA MATERALE JĘZYKA POLSKIEGO I SŁOWEŃSKIEGO)

The author shows the role of vocabulary in the process of developing the communicative competence in foreigners. She takes notice of “false friends”, which constitute a fair amount of the basic vocabulary. For Polish and Slovene this amount oscillates around 10%. If international words and the vocabulary inherited from the Proto–Slavic language were not taken into account, this amount would rise to 24–25%. The researcher gives examples of how false friends cause interference in communication, misunderstandings, or humor. In the process of developing the communicative competence in foreigners, one must also pay attention to collocations. Every language includes words that are non-existent in other languages. These words often express ideas specific to the given culture and the collective experience of the people who speak the given language. Among these, we can find the so called ethnologisms, historisms, and culturisms, which can only be taught through description.

All the contexts of the usage of the lexeme “mercy” in the “Diary” by saint Faustina give it a new semantic field and they stretch the term “mercy” onto all types of God’s activity – from the creation of the world to the salvation of mankind. It shows that the author anticipated the intuitions of the Second Vatican Council and contemporary research on this Christian notion, which has not been fully presented and understood yet. For theologians many phrases can be clear evidence that the massage of this text must have come from the revelation, for example such expressions as “depths of tenderness”, “the bosom of the Father”. For a theologian and biblical scholar it is a clear reference to Hebrew rahamīm, about which Faustina could not know. The expression “the bosom of the Father” is rarely used in religious texts even mystical ones.The image of mercy and attitudes one can adopt in relation to it point out mainly to one notion – worshipping the Divine Mercy. This image is proven by the research of key words – they focus on the priority of worshipping over other attitudes, even over the attitude of trust which is so often mentioned. Semantic transgressions can be noticed in the texts – shifts of the meaning, which are a particular characteristic of mystical writings. In this research those shifts refer to a semantic field of a lexeme “worship”. They also show that phrases describing a relationship of “mercy” “man – man” where included to a semantic field describing the relationship “man – God” and they mainly refer to the semantic scope of a lexeme “mercy”. The “Diary” clearly breaks with a common dictionary-based negative image of a situation of humiliating inequality which could be generated by showing mercy. According to Faustina’s text lowering of God to man and, similarly, of man to another man is aimed at making those people and their positions equal, entering into deep mutual participation and experiencing the same situation. Thus, showing mercy does not create a chasm between the giver and recipient but it annuls it. Such a wide semantic field exceeds a stereotypical (or prototypical) Christian image of mercy, which is mostly limited to a model of the merciful Samaritan or the father of a prodigal son, of Caritas foundation or religious orders which help the sick and the poor. According to the “Diary” every God’s activity demonstrates mercy, every action of Jesus as presented in the gospels, every healing, every meeting with people (with Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, with a young man from Nain), a selection of disciples and the sermon on the mountain. We should include there a description of the creation of the world, events with the Babel tower and the flood. However if we made a survey and presented three images: of Christmas, of the Samaritan leaning over a dying man on the way from Jericho and the scene of Resurrection and if we asked which picture illustrated the Divine Mercy, people would most often point out the second image. For Faustina, however, there is no greater manifestation of mercy than the incarnation and resurrection. The issue of sacraments is treated in a similar way. The “Diary” points out that one should not look for the elements of mercy in the Eucharist but that the whole Eucharist should be interpreted as a gift of the Divine Mercy. It cannot be said, for example, that confession is more the image of mercy that baptism, confirmation or Eucharist. Undoubtedly, it can be perceived in this way due to existing stereotypes. This research, though it seems vast, is only an introduction to a more detailed analysis (hence a note at the title – part 1)

NAZWA WŁASNA JAKO TEKST KULTURY W NAUCZANIU JĘZYKA POLSKIEGO JAKO OBCEGO

Language is the most important component of culture. Teaching a foreign language is, to a large extent, introducing information on the lexical system of language, which also includes proper names. Using them, a teacher of Polish can provide information about all the material and spiritual achievements of Poles. This article aims to show the components of the Polish culture, encoded in the onomastic layer of the Polish language (in antroponyms, toponyms and other categories of proper names) that are curricular content of the Polish language courses for foreigners at the A1 level. The source of language material was the textbook Hurra!!! Po polsku 1 by Małgorzata Małolepsza and Aneta Szymkiewicz. The analysis of names present in this manual leads to the conclusion that the introduction of information about these names completes the teaching process with intercultural education. What is more, it also contributes to a better understanding of and respect for the student’s own culture and cultures of other nations.

Synonyms according to Klementyna Hoffman (née Tańska) The paper deals with the way of describing by Klementyna Hoffman (née Tańska), living 1798-1845, who is known in the history of literature as an author of children’s and women’s texts and a defender of national identity, the lexemes being regarded as synonyms by her. The presented analyses show that Tańska regarded as synonyms not only lexemes in the modern linguistic sense, and described not only lexemes but also concepts. The construction of particular descriptions was characteristic of Hoffman and had a lot of features in common with the 19th-century attempts of the Polish synonymists. This is demonstrated by a comparison of the way of describing synonyms by Klementyna Hoffman and Bp. Adam S. Krasiński. This that distinguished the activity of Tańska in this respect was the use of moralistic admonishments.

The aim of the article is to analyse appellatives, recorded in the Dictionary of surnames used in Poland in the 21st century, which were derived from Polish and German names of agricultural tools. Personal names created in this manner indivisualised a person, indicating his profession according to the metonymic model DOER FOR INSTRUMENT. The surnames subject to analysis were: Brona, Ger. Egge, Cep, Ger. Flegel, Kosa, Ger. Sense, Lemiesz, Ger. Pflugschar, Pług, Ger. Pflug, Radło, Ger. R¨uhrpflug, Sierp, Ger. Sichel, Socha, Ger. Hakenpflug. At the moment of their creation, these surnames were characteristic of lower social strata: peasants or craftsmen. The nominainstrumenti carrier could have been the user or the maker of a given tool. The surnames are then vehicles of content and values connected with a particular individual, thus fulfilling the culture-forming function.
