Summary/Abstract: The article describes certain ways of understanding the meaning of the idea of happiness. Areas of philosophy and literature throughout the ages are being used for reference. Historical progress of the idea’s perception is shown from linguistic perspective — Russian and Polish are being compared as having similar attitude in the past, while contemporary use and meaning are illustrated using contrastive analysis of Russian and American, which present different approaches reflecting cultural and mental differences between those two societies these days. The author is basing on Wierzbicka’s and Zalizniak’s studies, claiming that approach similar to those two should be continued and developed focusing more on Polish language.
