Summary/Abstract: Mat is an integral part of Russian language, including also the literary language. For years, mat has been used to express artistic manifestoes as well as introducing new linguistic canons and standards. What is more, in the fi eld of literature this language was also a kind of a peculiar test of reader’s sensitivity. In the prose by Victor Erofeyev mat, however, plays much more important role. The writer uses it as an excellent literary material, a hero and treats it even as the co-author of his texts. Non-normative lexicon is no longer associated with the forbidden fruit. It acquired a new meaning as a part of the dialogue with the native language. The article shows different ways of using mat in essays, short stories and writer’s novels.
