Transport Accessibility and Road Network Load in Poland in View of Flood Risk

Dostępność transportowa i obciążenie sieci drogowej w Polsce w świetle zagrożeń powodziowych

Author(s): Szymon Wiśniewski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: transport accessibility; spatial mobility; transport geography; flood; road transport

The monograph contains the results of research devoted to determining the vulnerability of passenger road transport in Poland by identifying the nature and scale of changes in transport accessibility and changes in the network traffic load in the event of a flood (with different probabilities of occurrence), conducted under the project number 2018/29/B/HS4/01020, financed by the National Science Center in Poland. In the course of the implementation of such formulated main goal of the study, an attempt was made to achieve a group of specific objectives of a cognitive, methodological and application character. The research was conducted mainly on the basis of data on the extent of flood risk areas in Poland and their development, as well as the road network and the development of its neighborhood. The publication may be of interest to researchers dealing with the geography of transport or - more broadly - with socio-economic geography and spatial management. It can also be helpful material for students of study programs that relate to the geography of transport, transport accessibility or spatial mobility in their curriculum. The content of the thesis covers issues that can be used by specialists in crisis management or road infrastructure management in crisis situations related to the occurrence of a flood.

Statistics and demography at the University of Lodz. A brilliant jubilee

Statystyka i demografia w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim. Brylantowy jubileusz

Author(s): Czesław Domański,Alina Jędrzejczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: statistics; demography; development of statistical thought; precursors of statistics

The book handed over to the Readers includes the scientific, didactic and organizational achievements of statisticians and demographers of the University of Lodz. It can be treated as a continuation of the monograph entitled "Lodz academic statistics", published in 2020. The aim of the book is to present the achievements of statisticians and demographers of the University of Lodz, including precursors who have made a significant contribution to the development of statistics and demography as scientific disciplines and their wide application in many fields of knowledge. The occasion to publish this book was the 77th anniversary of the first lectures conducted by academic teachers at the University of Lodz and at the Lodz Branch of the Warsaw School of Economics. The presented scientific work covers a period of over one hundred years and has contributed to the significant development of statistics and demography in numerous higher education institutions, mainly at the University of Lodz. The Lodz community also supported other universities in Poland by promoting doctors and habilitated doctors, managing scientific projects and by organizing international conferences, including Multivariate Statistical Analysis conference, which will have its 40th edition in 2022. The book is scientific and popular science. It enriches the information on the scientific and didactic achievements of statisticians and demographers of the University of Lodz against the background of Polish, and partly also global, statistics and demography, in the process of historical development. Based on source documents, these achievements were presented against the background of Polish statistical and demographic thought ant its contribution to international statistical congresses.

Reading „Ulysses". An attempt at interpretation

Czytanie Ulissesa. Próba interpretacji

Author(s): Marek Rosiak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Literature; philosophy; hermeneutics; contemporaneity

I have tried to apply analytical tools supplied by philosophy and logic to reveal or perhaps - to some extent - even create a consistent account of Joyce’s masterpiece. “Ulysses” contains no determinate meaning, even in a cryptic form – its author intention was rather to incline a patient reader to interpret the text and in this way to co-create its meaning. It is a demanding enterprise, not only because of the size of the book and often an opaque style of Joyce’s writing but also because he often seems to suggest certain paths of interpretation leading astray. For example, in spite of many openly blasphemous fragments the book contains some nontrivial theological threads. Its composition reveal certain logical order akin to a musical composition although at first glance it could remind a kind of a pathwork and so on. The epoch of radical social changes resulting in the Great War surely influenced the content of the novel.

Price effects on Polish capital market

Efekty cenowe na polskim rynku kapitałowym

Author(s): Magdalena Jasiniak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: capital market; price effects; low price anomaly; behavioural finance; capital market anomalies; determinants of investors’ decisions

The aim of the study is to assess the perception of stocks’ investment attractiveness through the prism of their market prices from the investors’ perspective and the verification of pricing effects on the Polish capital market. On the Polish capital market, research on price effects are uncommon, although the area of behavioral finance and market anomalies seems to be quite widely explored. This study complements the research gap in this area. The results of research conducted on foreign capital markets describe the occurrence of various price phenomena, which indicates the existence of a relationship between the stocks market price and investors’ investment decisions which in consequence may translate into the formation of the rate of return of these stocks. In the case of the Polish capital market, it also stated that there is a relationship between the stock price and the return rates generated. It also indicates that the calendar anomalies known in the literature occur with various intensification, depending on the price range of stocks. In addition, it was noted that investors' reactions on split and resplit operations are different depending on the stock price before the event and the coefficient of split or resplit. Research carried out among individual investors has shown that the stock price is the most important factor in the decision-making process and according to respondents, it is about their investment attractiveness. In investors' opinion, the chances of achieving above-average returns are growing along with the stock price.

Wage differentiation in Voivodeships and its impact on total factor productivity

Zróżnicowanie płac w województwach i jego wpływ na łączną produktywność czynników produkcji

Author(s): Damian Mowczan / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Gini coefficient; TFP; regional analyzes; optimal wage differentiation; panel data

The aim of this paper is to estimate the impact of wage inequality on the level of total factor productivity (TFP). For many years, researchers have been discussing what the level of income or wage inequality should be. There is no unequivocal answer to this question, as the terms 'fairness' and 'efficiency' can be defined differently. This paper reviews research and concepts related to the impact of wage and income dispersion on the economic level and economic growth. The methods of measuring inequality and their relationship with human and social capital were also characterised. For the empirical portion, it was hypothesised that for each Voivodeship, there is an optimal wage differentiation that maximizes the level of TFP. It was also assumed that this differentiation significantly fluctuates between Voivodeships. The results of the econometric analyses of the production function seem to positively verify the hypothesis. Economics and finance

Jakub Przyłuski (1512–1554). Zarys życia i twórczości literackiej na tle epoki

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Jakub Przyłuski; Jeżów; Przemyśl; Kraków; 16th-century Renaissance literature; 16th-century Renaissance history

The biography of Jakub Przyłuski is outlined in the volume. The characteristics of his poetry were associated with it. Against the background of the current state of research, selected elements of the writer's and lawyer's main work, Leges seu statuta ac privilegia Regni Poloniae, were presented. The research also covered the author's activity as a town writer in Przemyśl, taking into account the background of the functioning of his office. Przyłuski's correspondence with Stanisław Orzechowski was also discussed in the context of Piotr Kmita's milieu, in whose circle he was a patron, and relations with the Reformation. Fragments of the Speech to the Polish Nobility by Orzechowski were also analyzed, serving as a kind of introduction to the work of Przyłuski, the Acts, statutes and privileges of the Kingdom of Poland. The volume also presents the history of the Benedictine monastery in Jeżów, which was presented as the cultural background of the childhood and youth of the later Przemyśl and Kraków writers.

The enterprise in the conditions of the modern market economy. Financing, measurement, efficiency

Przedsiębiorstwo w warunkach współczesnej gospodarki rynkowej. Finansowanie, pomiar, efektywność

Author(s): Agnieszka Janus,RAFAŁ JÓŹWICKI,Dorota Kobus-Ostrowska,Mariusz Nyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: financing; financial analysis; financial management; management efficiency; valuation of enterprises

The aim of the monograph is to create a compendium of theoretical-empirical-application knowledge, covering the foundations of finance theory, with particular emphasis on the problems of financing modern enterprises, the methodology of measuring their achievements (ex post analysis) and development plans (“ex ante” analysis). The unique character of the monograph is reflected in the composition of its content, which is evident both in the structure and in the presented content. All this is supported by numerous empirical examples. The monograph consists of six chapters. The first chapter contains theoretical issues relating to definitions of the most important concepts related to corporate finance. The next two chapters present the sources of financing most often used by modern entrepreneurs. In turn, the fourth chapter is devoted to the initial analysis and evaluation of the enterprise’s financial management and is enriched with an empirical study. In the fifth chapter, the authors present the methods for estimating the value of an enterprise used in economic practice, together with a case study. In the sixth chapter, the authors explain the fundamental issues related to the concept of “efficiency” and discuss the key methods for evaluating investment projects, using numerous numerical examples. Therefore, the inclusion of the most important problems of theory, analysis and evaluation, as well as empiricism of corporate finance, with particular emphasis on the aspect of enterprises’ financing, in one literature item, is the monograph’s greatest value.

Dictionary of Literary Culture of Łódź until 1939

Słownik kultury literackiej Łodzi do 1939 r.

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Łódź; literary culture; cultural institutions; biographies of authors; prose; poetry; libraries; theatre; literary groups; cultural periodicals; literary magazines

The Dictionary of Literary Culture of Łódź until 1939 is a compendium of knowledge about the literature and literary life of Łódź before 1939. It presents the literary culture of Łódź in its linguistic and thematic diversity, from the beginnings of industrial Łódź in the 19th century to the outbreak of World War II, which radically and irreversibly changed social life and national relations in the city. The volume contains entries about numerous characters (writers, poets and playwrights, literary critics, magazine editors, journalists, animators of literary life), institutions (publishing houses, periodical and ephemeral magazines, libraries, theatres, cabarets, literary cafes), characteristic literary phenomena and individual the most important works related to Łódź, both in the highly artistic and popular circle. It covers Polish, German, Yiddish and Hebrew as well as Russian-speaking phenomena – both those constantly present in contemporary social consciousness and those that are now forgotten. Dictionary entries are the result of extensive Polish and foreign queries, the fruit of which is the finding of many scattered sources and texts, including those unpublished over the last decades, and sometimes over a century. The entries of the Dictionary are original, their authors are Polish literary scholars, Germanists, Yiddish and Hebrewists, Russianists, theatre historians, library and press scholars, and historians.

Special Economic Zones in Poland: Past Experiences and Future Prospects

Specjalne strefy ekonomiczne w Polsce. Doświadczenia i perspektywy

Author(s): Tomasz Dorożyński,Janusz Świerkocki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Special economic zones; investment policy; investment incentives; foreign direct investment; Polish investment zone

The research goal of the monograph was to review the results of twenty five years of special economic zones (SEZ) in Poland and to preliminary assess a new “Polish Investment Zone (PIZ)” programme. Analysis and interpretation of extensive empirical material have made an important contribution into studies on SEZ. Emphasis has been placed on foreign direct investment and SEZ investment in a regional perspective. The monograph consists of 4 chapters devoted to: (1) the concept, theoretical foundations and principles of SEZ functioning in Poland; (2) statistical results of their development; (3) effects they have produced in the light of empirical studies; and (4) first results of the “Polish Investment Zone” programme. The in-depth review of empirical studies and the examination of statistical data allow us to draw positive conclusions on the performance of the zones, mostly owing to foreign investors’ operations, and moderately positive conclusions with regard to their effects on the economy. First outcomes of PIZ reveal an increased interest among domestic small and medium-sized entrepreneurs and relatively less interest among foreign entrepreneurs. Two features of PIZ are evident: the centralised management of the programme and the discretionary nature of the assessment of qualitative criteria, which “de facto” condition access to public funds.

Methodological reconstruction of knowledge creation conditions – selected problems

Metodologiczna rekonstrukcja warunków tworzenia wiedzy – wybrane zagadnienia

Author(s): Danuta Urbaniak-Zając,Jacek Piekarski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: empirical research methodology; scientific criticism; research method

The publication explores methodological questions concerning the creation of knowledge in pedagogy as a discipline rooted in social sciences and humanities, assuming critical reconstruction of the research process as a factor determining the quality of all research practices and considered both as a source condition and a substrate of methodological research. The first part of the publication offers a general characterisation of the perspective adopted by the author. It discusses problems concerning the status of decisions related to the choice of research methods, the issue of presence of the researcher in the research practice, and reflects upon the conditions and possibilities of formulating critical statements in educational sciences. It presents different modalities of understanding criticism, and explores the possibilities of practising “critical methodology” designed as a study of methods of scientific practice criticism in a changing cultural framework. In this part, the various models of criticism are reconstructed (dogmatism, conventionalism, and tactical discretion), as well as the cultural patterns emerging on their basis (inhibition, tolerantism, and presentism). In the second part, the “participatory research perspective” is reconstructed as a perspective related to the “meaningful presence” of the researcher in the research practice. A characterisation of participation as a result of “status mediation” associated with taking the perspective of observer, witness, and causal subject is suggested and the accompanying dilemmas with the related consequences for the construction of a methodological perspective are explored. An example of the use of the outlined proposals is self-description of research activity. The third part provides examples of critical reconstructions of the diverse practices that constitute the research workshop used in the process of empirical research.

The Family Saga in 21st Century Polish Literature. Convention or Contestation

Saga rodzinna w literaturze polskiej XXI wieku. Konwencja czy kontestacja?

Author(s): Anna Zatora / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: family saga; family novel; conventional saga; contestation saga; women’s literature; anti-saga

This publication redefines the family saga genre, confronting recent literary representations with the model of the traditional family novel, and explores the relationship between the evolution of the genre and transformations in the family model. Academic definitions of family saga (family novel) to date are inadequate to describe recent literary material, i.e., family-themed novels written in the early twenty-first century. Selected Polish literary works written between 2005 and 2015 were analyzed: Piaskowa Góra (Joanna Bator), Saturn (Jacek Dehnel), Stulecie Winnych (trilogy; Ałbena Grabowska), Dom na rozlewiskiem (trilogy; Małgorzata Kalicińska), Rodzina O. (Ewa Madeyska), Chochoły (Wit Szostak), Włoskie szpilki and Szum (Magdalena Tulli). This research points to two ways in which the genre has evolved: the first is a continuation of the traditional model of the family saga, and the literary representations belonging to it (conventional sagas) remain faithful to the model of the family developed at the time and reproduce most of the poetic elements; the second way in which the saga has evolved includes works (contestation sagas) that draw on the genological tradition but at the same time critically reinterpret it. In conclusion, it is proposed to introduce for such representations of family sagas the term "anti-saga" hitherto unfunctional in scientific discourse. The analysis of the literary material allows us to demonstrate a significant relationship between the development of cultural research and the evolution of the family model and the genre of the family saga.

Financial analysis of the occurrence of damages relating to patients based on judgments of the courts of Łódź district

Finansowa analiza występowania szkód dotyczących pacjentów na podstawie wyroków sądów okręgu łódzkiego

Author(s): Daria Korytkowska Piaskowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Adverse Events; Civil Liability Insurance; Damage; Medical error; Claims; Compensation

One of the most important problems that hospitals and healthcare entities struggle with is the problem of adverse events, causing damage to patients. Such damages result in various legal, medical, system, personal, social, and financial repercussions. Since this problem is quite well explored from the point of view of legal liability of healthcare entities for damage to a patient in connection with medical services, as well as from a risk management point of view, the objective of this monograph is to investigate the financial consequences. For this purpose the evaluation was made of the damages asserted and adjudicated as a result of claims for damage caused to patients in hospitals. An additional objective was also to check whether the compulsory third-party insurance of the entities offering medical services guarantees financial security to them. To this end, an analysis was carried out of selected case files related to damages to patients treated in hospitals in Poland, filed in registries of the Regional Court in Łódź in the years 2005-2011, on the basis of which the following were established: the types of adverse events that most often result in claims for compensation and their financial repercussions. What is more, it was verified to what extent these claims were satisfied in court judgments, allowing the claims partially or entirely. As a result of the research carried out, it was determined, among others, that damages to patients generate high compensation claims which are most often related to such adverse events as hospital-acquired infection, medical errors, or medical negligence, while the biggest indemnity component is compensation.

The short life cycle of many products and the need to keep costs to a minimum make the procurement process very difficult. Identifying needs, selecting suppliers, negotiating purchase conditions, and choosing the type of transport, as well as the costs of procurement and creating and maintaining inventories, are numerous elements that make up the procurement process. The efficiency of the procurement process guarantees that the company will be competitive in the market. Savings and errors made at the initial stage of the procurement process affect the subsequent stages of production and service provision. In order to balance the supply and demand of a company's products, a large amount of information from different sources needs to be analyzed. For this analysis, well-qualified staff with high analytical competencies are necessary. They have tools such as IT systems to support material requirements planning and planning other enterprise resources.

Score in the wind. The Parisian Culture concepts and the Polish eastern policy 1989-2014

Partytura na wietrze. Koncepcje paryskiej Kultury a polska polityka wschodnia w latach 1989-2014

Author(s): Marcin Frenkel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish eastern policy; Giedroyc; Mieroszewski; ULB; Parisian Culture; Giedroyc Doctrine; Eastern Europe

The book attempts to analyze the influence of the Parisian "Culture" magazine's (in Polish: Kultura) concepts on the Polish eastern policy from 1989 to 2014. "Kultura" was established in 1946 in Rome and soon after moved to Maisons-Laffitte, a small town in the suburbs of Paris. This magazine became the most influential Polish independent "think-tank" during the cold war era. This small group of intellectuals in exile, led by Jerzy Giedroyc, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, created a strategy - so-called "The Giedroyc Doctrine" - that later became a road map for all the successive Polish governments after the fall of communism in 1989. The "Giedroyc Doctrine" can be summarized in four crucial points: I ) supporting the independence and democratization of Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus (ULB) and preserving post-war border lines in Europe; 2) counteracting soviet/Russian imperialism, ceasing Polish-Russian rivalry for ULB territories and creating good relations with Russian liberal/democratic parties and civic movements; 3) consolidating and rebuilding of good relations with Germany; 4) integrating Poland with political, economic and military organizations of the Euro-Atlantic world. It should be underlined that Russia has been the central point of reference for the whole idea. Recognition of the above points should neutralize the threat from Russian imperialism and build a solid foundation for Poland's future security. Analyzing the eastern policy of successive Polish governments in terms of continuing or departing from the concept of "Kultura", the author refers to the above-mentioned key postulates. The research results presented in the book prove that at the given time, all subsequent Polish governments took into account and accepted the "Giedroyc doctrine". Moreover, it should be stated that throughout the first twenty-five years of the Third Republic of Poland, its foreign policy was characterized by a high degree of continuity and attachment to the idea of the Parisian "Kultura". And this policy was the subject of cross-partisan consensus. On the other hand, at the detailed (tactical) level - going beyond the general concept of foreign policy - there were certain misunderstandings of Giedroyc's doctrine

Measurement and communication of the operational fixed assets economic value in the accounting system - theoretical approach, case studies, model

Pomiar i komunikowanie wartości ekonomicznej operacyjnego majątku trwałego w systemie rachunkowości – ujęcie teoretyczne, studia przypadków, model

Author(s): Marcin Michalak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: economic value, operational fixed assets; fixed assets impairment; accounting system; enterprise value; IAS 36

The monography explains the essence and significance of the "economic value" measure against the background of the strategic enterprise value management process in the sphere of investing in operating fixed assets (OFA), as well as the role of the accounting system in ensuring the effective and efficient implementation of this process, including communication of information on the economic value of the analyzed group of assets for the purposes of management and financial reporting. Economic value integrates several problem dimensions undertaken in the study. As a measure reflecting the overarching goal of the entity, it integrates: 1) the goals of investors and the goals of managers, 2) subsystems of management and financial accounting, as well as the process of investing in OFA with the process of enterprise’s value creation. This meets the demand for a managerial approach and value orientation in modern financial reporting. The monography presents a broad theoretical analysis of the subject matter, supported by the results of literature research and the author's own empirical research, including two case studies. The above-mentioned approaches were used in the last part of the monography to formulate assumptions and develop an accounting system model oriented to measuring and communicating the economic value of OMT, integrating the managerial perspective and the financial reporting perspective. The presented content and proposed model can be used to develop systems for measuring the economic value of OMT in economic practice, including for the purposes of measuring the impairment of fixed assets according to the National Accounting Standard No. 4 and the International Accounting Standard No. 36 (IAS 36).

Infrastructure in the functional and spatial structure of territorial units

Infrastruktura w strukturze funkcjonalno-przestrzennej jednostek terytorialnych

Author(s): Marcin Feltynowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: technical infrastructure; green infrastructure; land-use planning; local development; functional and spatial structure; evidence-based decision-making

Space as an object of land-use planning is being transformed by using appropriate tools. An important element in this is the spatial information infrastructure, which supports both the planning and the management processes of all types of infrastructure. Vector data should assign a significant role, which allows direct and indirect research related to the infrastructure. An important aspect of land-use planning is the appropriate approach to the existing condition of infrastructure and land-use development. Currently, decision-making by both local authorities and investors is conditioned by many factors that can be quantified using mathematical and statistical methods. These methods lead to the possibility of using decision support tools. They also help estimate the economic account related to the use of infrastructure and increase its efficiency in selected areas. The monograph aims to systematize knowledge in infrastructural and land-use planning, both on theoretical and practical grounds. The aim is also to define the infrastructure and indicate a new classification of particular infrastructures resulting from technological progress and changes in the surrounding world. Theoretical analysis and research show that local governments' challenges are making spatial data and information available to other local actors and researchers. It also allows local authorities to implement evidence-based policies.

Reflexive risk regulation in personal data protection. Theoretical grounds and practical activity of the President of the Personal Data Protection Office

Refleksyjna regulacja ryzyka w ochronie danych osobowych. Podstawy teoretyczne i praktyka działalności Prezesa UODO

Author(s): Maciej Pichlak,Klaudia Gaczoł / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: reflexive regulation; risk-based regulation; risk regulation; personal data protection; GDPR; Personal Data Protection Office

The General Data Protection Regulation has introduced a strategy of reflexive, risk-based regulation, that is relatively little-known in Poland. This normative novelty poses a significant cognitive and practical challenge. This book considers the essence of reflexive and risk-based regulation. In doing so, it is written "with two hands": theoretical and practical. In a theoretical part, we analyse different ways of conceptualizing reflexivity and risk in regulation. The practical part is a presentation of the results of empirical research about to what extent these theoretical constructs are reflected in the activities of the President of the Personal Data Protection Office in Poland.

The space of the Holy Land in the 16th-century descriptions of Polish pilgrims. Series: Analecta Literackie i Językowe XIX

Przestrzeń Ziemi Świętej w szesnastowiecznych deskrypcjach polskich pielgrzymów. Analecta Literackie i Językowe XIX

Author(s): Katarzyna Ossowska-Kulińska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Holy Land; peregrination; geopoetics, chorography; description

The Holy Land is recognized due to its unique location for the events described in The Bible and its depicted this way since the Second Century. You cannot find any other region that holds so many of geographical, historical, and literary masterpiecies. One of the most interesting resources of presenting this region is the peregrinations which serve as the written memory of the pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The diaries, summaries of events, and guides for the pilgrims count for the majority of the Western European and Late Middle Ages Pilgrimages. This genre includes four unique peregrinations of the Holy Land written by the Polish authors, which are as follows: Terrae sancte et urbis Hierusalem descriptio fratris Anzelmi ordinis Minorum de observantia by Anzelm Pollak, Jan Twardowski's itenary, Jan Gorynski's diary and the description of the journey to the Holy Land Syria and Egypt by Mikolaj Krzysztof "the Orphan" Radziwil. They were published only in XVI century, much later than the Italian or German masterpieces. Does the question arise if those four literary works differ from the Western European Pilgrimages to Palestine? What was the most interesting part of these pilgrimages and how The Holy Land was presented? What is the uniqueness of the Polish masterpieces describing the exploration of the Holy Places? Is their main focus on the religious aspect of Palestine or maybe they also present the oriental atmosphere of this place? In this book, you can find the answers to the above questions but not limited to those. I believe you might be interested in the pilgrimages to the Holy Land by Polish pilgrims who also discovered the Middle East's culture and Nature.
