The European Union in the Process of Sustainable Development in the Conditions of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Unia Europejska w procesie zrównoważonego rozwoju w warunkach pandemii COVID-19

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: European Union; Globalisation; circular economy; digitisation; international trade; capital movements; migrations

W monografii p.t. Unia Europejska w Gospodarce światowej zaprezentowane zostały wyniki analizy i oceny pozycji Unii Europejskiej (UE) we współczesnej gospodarce światowej w kontekście dynamicznych zmian zachodzących w procesach globalizacji i międzynarodowej integracji gospodarczej.

Islam, the Arabs, and the image of the Caliphs in the accounts of the Chronography of Theophanes the Confessor. Byzantina Lodziensia tom XLIII

Islam, Arabowie i wizerunek kalifów w przekazach Chronografii Teofanesa Wyznawcy. Byzantina Lodziensia tom XLIII

Author(s): Błażej Cecota / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Byzantine empire; Umayyad caliphate; Muhammad; Mu’awiya; ‘Abd al-Malik; Abbasid caliphate; Byzantine historiography; Theophanes the Confessor

The Chronography of Theophanes is certainly one of the most important Byzantine sources containing information on the history of the beginnings of Muslim statehood, the Caliphate, in the Byzantine cultural sphere. The work contains many important passages concerning both the very person of Muhammad, the founder of Islam, the Muslims, and the individual representatives of the Caliphate, with its rulers at the forefront. In the context of the information provided by Theophanes about the Prophet, I have tried to confront it with contemporary research on the origins of Islam. In such a way, it is possible to look at this narrative from a somewhat broader perspective, without limiting oneself to merely listing the obvious accusations formulated against Muhammad by the Byzantine chronicler. In the second chapter, I also decided to discuss several themes in which the followers of Allah repeatedly served Theophanes as a reference point for describing the internal history of the Byzantine Empire: the issue of alleged Monophysite, Syriac or Coptic assistance to Muslims in the context of the first invasions, the issue of iconoclasm, the question of Muslim persecution of Christians. In the third chapter I have taken up the subject of Theophanes’ portrayal of individual Caliphs. I have divided the material according to the currently accepted chronology, however I have also noted elements noticeable in the Chronography, but not fitting in with this common scheme.

Jurysprudencja 18. Lack of danger to a legal good versus abstract exposure to danger crimes

Jurysprudencja 18. Brak zagrożenia dla dobra prawnego a przestępstwa abstrakcyjnego narażenia dóbr prawnych na niebezpieczeństwo

Author(s): Mateusz Filipczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: abstract exposure to danger to legal goods crimes; principle of criminal liability; legal goods; intepretation of law; theory of criminal law; theory of law

The abstract exposure to danger crimes regard to the behaviors, which criminalization is questionable, because they involve conducts that only potentially lead to negative consequences for the legal goods. Therefore, the doctrine of criminal law emphasizes that these crimes are a manifestation of criminalization in the so-called foreground of infringement of the legal goods. However, the relatively simple construction of formal offences raises theoretical doubts as to whether the lack of a danger to the legal good can be considered within the category of abstract formal (conduct) offences. In the monography it provides a positive answer to them, presenting a theoretical model of the foundation of criminal liability for crimes of abstract exposure to danger, for which it is necessary to take into account the axiological and normative context using figures of danger to the legal good and the rules of conduct with the legal good. With regard to the formal offences of abstract exposure to danger to the concrete-individual goods, the causally understood possibility (suitability) of infringement of a legal good is a necessary element of the application of the sanctioning norm, and the verification of which boils down to a restrictive functional (pro-constitutional) interpretation of statutory features of crimes and assessment of the degree of social harmfulness of the fulfilling statutory features. An in-depth analysis using the legal good made it possible to present conclusions on the apportionment of goods into concrete-individual goods, collective goods and an aggregate of concrete-individual goods, which are important not only for the principles of criminal liability for the crimes of abstract exposure to danger, but also contribute to the general analysis of the theoretical foundations of criminal liability.

Analyses and forecasts of polish labour market. Cross-section of occupations groups

Analizy i prognozy polskiego rynku pracy. Przekrój grup zawodowych

Author(s): Artur Gajdos,Karolina Lewandowska-Gwarda / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: labour market; number of employees; occupations groups; forecasts

Analyses and forecasts of changes in the occupational structure of employees are an extremely important element of the labour market research. They provide information about the future demand of work in specific occupations, which enables the intensification of adjustment processes of the labour market in the changing socio-economic reality. Appropriate qualification and professional matching of jobseekers and job vacancies leads to a more effective use of production factors and, consequently, to an increase in their productivity. It is also a determinant of wage growth, while satisfying the professional aspirations of working people. In the macroeconomic perspective, it affects economic development, the level of unemployment and the state of the government budget. This monograph presents the theoretical basis for forecasting changes of the occupational structure in the labour market, as well as the analysis and forecasts of the number of employees in the cross-section of major, sub-major and minor occupations groups in Poland. Historical data analysis covered the period 1995-2018, apart from that in the last chapter it was extended by 2019 and 2020. The forecasts results were presented in the short horizon until 2025 and in the long horizon, in five-year intervals from 2025 to 2050. An attempt was also made to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occupational structure in Poland. The presented results made it possible to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the expected transformations in the labour market in Poland. The high forecast dynamics of the increase in the demand for specialists and the decrease in demand for farmers indicates the continuation of the process of transition of the Polish economy towards the knowledge-based economy in the coming years.

François de Curel and the crisis of drama: from the “well-made play” to the “well-unmade play”

François de Curel and the crisis of drama: from the “well-made play” to the “well-unmade play”

François de Curel et la crise du drame : de la « pièce bien faite » à la « pièce bien défaite »

Author(s): Tomasz Kaczmarek / Language(s): French

Keywords: François de Curel; crisis of drama; well-made play; ontological drama; stage character

Curel’s works give tangible proof of a “rupture”, and not of a crisis of the drama, allowing the advent of a more open and free form ― in a word, more rhapsodic. It constitutes a departure from the traditional dramatic structure which is based on an ever-increasing tension that goes from the exposition through a myriad of adventures to the culmination of the action. As we remove the dynamic and logical attribute from it, the characters will not have their active function supposed to push the plot forward, either. In this context, the French playwright breaks the unity of time for the “benefit of temporal gaps between past and present” while emphasizing the drama experienced by the characters to the detriment of the agonistic action. It is in this way that these witnesses rather than agents of action no longer resemble acting heroes, but the unfortunate figures who incessantly and in an almost absolute passivity ruminate on their existential distress. Thus, “diegesis” replaces “mimesis”; plot progression being replaced by soul evolution.

International investment flows. Outline of theory and practice in the context of the evolution of the international monetary system

Międzynarodowe przepływy inwestycji. Zarys teorii i praktyki na tle ewolucji międzynarodowego systemu walutowego

Author(s): Małgorzata Janicka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: international investment flows; international capital flows; the Lucas paradox; international monetary system

The monograph is the first comprehensive study on the Polish market combining the analysis of theoretical and practical aspects of international investment flows against the background of the development of the international currency system. The period in which it was completed probably marks the beginning of the emergence of a new global financial architecture. Particular attention was devoted to the discussion on the directions of capital flows in the world economy in relation to the so-called Lucas paradox, most often defined in the context of the inadequacy of the neoclassical model to explain the direction of investment capital flow on a global scale. The aim of the monograph is to introduce the reader to the various theories, views, facts and data on international investment flows over the past two centuries. In a globalized economy, cross-border flows of financial resources constitute a significant part of the ongoing economic processes and are an important determinant of the volatility of macroeconomic parameters. This monograph, which is intended to provide knowledge and competences for the analysis and interpretation of international financial flows, is addressed to a wide audience: students, scientists, business representatives and all those interested in the subject.

Total Logistics Management. Logistics and Supply Chain 4.0

Total Logistic Management. Logistyka i łańcuchy dostaw 4.0

Author(s): Maciej Bielecki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Logistics; Supply Chain; Industry 4.0; Society 5.0

The monograph “Total Logistics Management. Logistics and Supply Chains 4.0” presents a futuristic model of logistics and supply chains using the technological leverage of Industry 4.0 and the assumptions of the concept of Society 5.0 against the background of a dynamically changing environment. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, selected challenges facing logistics and supply chains are described, relating in particular to sustainable development and the circular economy, Industry 4.0, Society 5.0, disruptions affecting logistics and supply chains and their prospects for progress against the background of economic development scenarios. Part two of the monograph, focuses on the logistics concepts in practice, i.e. lean, agile, lean-agile, resilient and green logistics and supply chains, which are discussed in the context of their applicability against the backdrop of the disruptions discussed in the publication. The last two chapters, of the second part of the work, are a conceptual structuring of the Total Logistics Management concept and present the author's Logistics and Supply Chain 4.0 model, taking into account the current challenges facing logistics and supply chains. The presented book is a good starting point for academic and practical discussion, on the future of logistics and supply chains in such a turbulently changing environment.

Supplier involvement in product development

Dostawca w procesie rozwoju produktu

Author(s): Grażyna Kędzia / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: NPD; SIPD; supply chain; B2B relationship; resilience; eco-design

The aim of the monograph is to systematize the current knowledge on the supplier involvement in product development (SIPD) and to deepen it the light of key challenges for the management of contemporary supply chains. There are four chapters in the monograph, only the first of which is the theoretical one. It introduces the key definitions, approaches and concepts related to the product development in value chain. The second chapter is a systematic literature review, which resulted in the analysis of 170 scientific articles. The description of the SLR outcomes was presented in eight thematic areas and led to the identification of various measures and existing research gaps. They became the basis for the development of research questionnaires and designing empirical research. The survey covered 500 manufacturing companies operating in Poland. It allowed answering eight research questions, including the recognition of the impact of SIPD on building resilient relationships with suppliers and designing products with reduced environmental impact. Case studies deepen the topic of Design for Environment and circular economy, presenting examples of cooperation with suppliers in the light of the NPD process and stages of the product life cycle. The monograph ends with, inter alia, recommendations for enterprises wishing to achieve better results in the product development chain as well as future research directions. This monograph is a product of the science project ‘Flexibility in relationships with suppliers in terms of supplier–purchaser models of cooperation on product development in the B2B market’, no. 2016/21/B/HS4/00665, financed by the National Science Centre (NCN) in Poland

Contemporary Concepts of Administrative Procedure. Between Legalism and Pragmatism

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: Public Administration; Administrative Procedure; Union Law; Administrative Law

The aim of this volume is to compare various types of administrative procedure and show their similarities and differences in national, European and global dimensions. The Authors’ intention is also to capture the regularities governing the development of law on administrative proceedings, including answers to the following questions: 1) is there a genetic relationship between the three generations of procedures, or do they derive from the separate ideas of national legislatives (genetic peculiarities)? 2) to what extent did modern procedures become the subject of national codifications? 3) what are the characteristics of national participatory procedures? 4) what are the national experiences in the field of “coexistence” of the three generations of administrative procedures? 5) where is the boundary between pragmatism and legalism of administrative procedures, for example in the case of urgent or simplified, automated and mass procedures? 6) does the increasing complexity of social life necessitate new solutions to integrate standards of the Rule of Law (traditional procedural values) with requirements of procedural pragmatism and efficiency? 7) are the new solutions in contradiction with the idea of multi-aspect protection of interests in administrative procedure?

Childhood in a working family in interwar Łódź. An ethnographic and pedagogical perspective

Dzieciństwo w rodzinie robotniczej międzywojennej Łodzi. Perspektywa etnograficzno-pedagogiczna

Author(s): Anna Deredas,Joanna Sosnowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: childhood; kid; workers’ family; memories; ethnographic material; interwar Łódź (1918–1939)

The book entitled Dzieciństwo w rodzinie robotniczej międzywojennej Łodzi. Perspektywa etnograficzno-pedagogiczna (Childhood in a Working Family in Interwar Łódź. An Ethnographic and Pedagogical Perspective) was intended to present the source materials kept in the Bronisława Kopczyńska-Jaworska Ethnographic Archive of the Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Institute of the University of Łódź. Those materials, which include biographies, memories, records of conversations, and stories, were collected from people from a working class background in the 1970s. and 80s. for the purpose of a large-scale study on the working class culture in Łódź initiated by the circle of Łódź ethnographers. Men and women who took part in the study were former workers from Łódź factories, aged app. 60–80 at the time of the study. The Łódź researchers were interested in issues related to the life of workmen in pre-war Łódź (before 1939), taking into account the issues such as a family, neighbours’, and social circle, an employment environment, work and free time, conditions of existence, everyday life and holidays, folk lore, customs and ceremonies, and social and political activities. The contents of the collected source materials enabled the authors to recreate, or rather to present – considering the adopted concept of the book, where the interviewees reach back to their memories of the past – the image of the childhood in a working family in interwar Łódź. The intention of the authors was to “give the floor” to people from a working class background who experienced (or observed) the childhood stage (of their own or of their children) in interwar Łódź. It is their statements presented in the form of quotations taken from the archive materials that fill most of the book pages. The ethnographic and pedagogical perspective of both the study and the book written as its result is, from the viewpoint of an interdisciplinary cooperation, desired and valuable. The issues of the functioning of a child in working families, their birth, nurturing, care, conditions of development, education, spending of their free time, participation in family and annual ceremonies, and maintaining the customs of working class culture are issues close to both ethnography and pedagogy (pedagogy and ethnography). That “closeness” influenced the arrangement of the book contents. It is divided into nine chapters, each of them consisting of several sections encompassing the most important childhood stages and events. The monograph is dedicated to the memory of Professor Bronisława Kopczyńska-Jaworska (1924–2016), head of the Ethnography Department of the University of Łódź in 1970–1994, who studied the issues of working class culture in the history of Łódź.

The Role of Export Credit Agencies in Trade Financing

The Role of Export Credit Agencies in Trade Financing

Author(s): Agnieszka Dorożyńska,Tomasz Dorożyński / Language(s): English

Keywords: trade finance; export credits; export credit agencies

A characteristic feature of the modern global economy is the deepening economic interdependence and increasingly closer business-to-business trade relations. The growth of international trade has been significantly supported by transaction financing mechanisms. Extensive use of traditional as well as innovative trade finance instruments, both long and short-term ones, was one of the reasons why world trade experienced a rather rapid expansion in the first decade of the 21st century. Export credit agencies have played a meaningful role in the financing international transactions. The aim of this monograph is to assess the operations of export credit agencies in the face of changes occurring in the international market. Chapter one discusses the methods used in financing export-import transactions against the backdrop of their practical applications. Chapters two and three present the organisational and structural framework, legal basis for the development of export credit agencies, and an assessment of their performance in the area of export support. The distinguishing feature of this publication lies in providing a comprehensive analysis of the development and functioning of export credit agencies in the context of trade finance.

The Communist Party of China Congress: Day by Day. Not on the front page

Author(s): Dominik Mierzejewski / Language(s): English

Keywords: Communist Party of China; 20th Congress Party of China; Xi Jinping

This volume is a collection of short day-by-day commentaries on the 20th Party Congress. As we know, Xi Jinping has cemented power and established his now unique place in the history of the Communist Party of China. However, the commentaries are not taken from the front pages of Chinese media outlets that were dominated by images and words of senior leaders and mainly Xi Jinping. The commentaries look at “People’s Daily” articles that discussed the Party Congress but not exclusively from the perspective of party members from the higher echelon.

Banking signposts. Contemporary directions of development of the banking sector in Poland

Drogowskazy bankowości. Współczesne kierunki rozwoju bankowości w Polsce

Author(s): Marika Ziemba / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: banking sector; development; banking signposts; banking

The bank is an entity whose task is to meet the needs of consumers, and therefore must act in such a way as to get to know them as well as possible, and on the other hand, to offer an optimal product. These conditions require continuous improvement of banks' operations, and currently the most popular directions of development include: improving the quality of digital customer service, increasing data analysis capabilities, reducing operating costs, increasing investment in innovation, meeting legal requirements and adapting to compliance regulations, updating or replacement of the basic operating system components, recruitment and retraining of employees, improvement of business processes, increased security and authentication of data, cooperation with entities belonging to the FinTech sector, development of mobile payments, implementation of the sustainable development policy. The typical problems related to the functioning of banks include the specific situation related to the emergence of an economic recession in the country and the prolonged period of at least partial shutdown of the economy as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Hence, it is necessary to analyze each of the above-mentioned development paths from the point of view of new operating conditions. The main objective of the study was to identify potential directions of development of the banking sector from the point of view of consumers and banks, their confrontation and assessment of the extent to which the current conditions on the financial market may affect a specific choice. Identification of the directions of development of the banking sector was carried out on the basis of an analysis of the literature on the subject, while the consumer perspective was presented on the basis of the CAWI questionnaire survey.

Jurysprudencja 19. Zatrudnienie tymczasowe jako nietypowa forma świadczenia pracy

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: temporary employment; National Labour Inspectorate; temporary agency work; annual leave

Redaktorzy serii Marek Zirk-Sadowski, Bartosz Wojciechowski

Economic Growth. Social Capital, Family, Inequality of Income, Quality of Life, Bottlenecks. Selected papers from 2018 to 2022

Author(s): Jan Jacek Sztaudynger,Ewa Ambroziak,Paweł Baranowski,Paweł Starosta,Marcin Sztaudynger / Language(s): English

Keywords: Economic Growth; Social Capital; Family; Inequality of Income; Quality of Life; Bottlenecks

This book deals mainly with economic growth, its interdependence with social capital, and the consequences of the “happy productive worker” hypothesis. A happy employee works better, earns more money, and as a result, his quality of life goes up. This feedback loop of productivity and happiness means that on the road to effective economic growth and development, man and his quality of life must be taken into consideration as a very important causative factor. The authors guess that the social capital (trust, helpfulness, fairness), family social capital (marriage, divorce, fertility), as well as income inequality are social determinants of the quality of life, sustainable growth and development. They all are characteristics of society’s harmonization. Most of these hypotheses have been verified using econometric models. We hope that such an approach will help to reduce the danger of the fetishization of economic growth.Likewise, the hypothesis on non-cyclical GDP fluctuations was considered, where efficiency of fixed capital investment depends on post bottlenecks. The book summarizes Jon Jacek Sztaudynger’s scientific work on economic growth over the last twenty years. It contains six published articles (co-authors: Ewa Ambroziak, Paweł Baranowski, Paweł Starosta, and Jan Marek Sztaudynger).

Edukacja do samodzielności. Warsztaty z dociekań filozoficznych: scenariusze zajęć.

Author(s): Aldona Pobojewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: education; workshops; soft skills; lesson plans

This publication is the heralded third part of a monograph on the educational method of Philosophical Investigations Workshops (hereafter WDF). While the first two parts published in a single volume entitled Educating for Independence. Philosophical Investigations Workshops. Theory and Methodology deal with the theoretical and methodological foundations of the referred classes, the third part presents the strategy of conducting these classes. It consists of detailed lesson plans for each class.KształtKształtKształtKształtKształtKształtPhilosophical Investigations Workshops are a relatively new educational method for the Polish reader. Generally speaking, it serves the development of skills, motivation and social and cognitive attitudes related to the acquisition of intellectual and moral independence (i.e. the ability to pose problem questions, formulate one’s own position and its argumentation, critical thinking, sensitivity, imagination, creativity and many others).Research indicates that Polish youth is deficient in these soft competences, which significantly reduces their ability to adapt to the realities of the modem world. Remote learning during the pandemic period has exacerbated these deficits and teachers need tools to address this situation. Familiarity with WDFs can help to improve this.WDFs are a universal tool in two ways. Once - it can be used at any level of teaching (from kindergarten to university of the third age) in a variety of educational and childcare settings. This is because it fulfils its role regardless of the age and intellectual level of the participants. Two - it is suitable for work in all subjects, and it works perfectly well in ethics lessons.
