Summary/Abstract: The Dictionary of Literary Culture of Łódź until 1939 is a compendium of knowledge about the literature and literary life of Łódź before 1939. It presents the literary culture of Łódź in its linguistic and thematic diversity, from the beginnings of industrial Łódź in the 19th century to the outbreak of World War II, which radically and irreversibly changed social life and national relations in the city. The volume contains entries about numerous characters (writers, poets and playwrights, literary critics, magazine editors, journalists, animators of literary life), institutions (publishing houses, periodical and ephemeral magazines, libraries, theatres, cabarets, literary cafes), characteristic literary phenomena and individual the most important works related to Łódź, both in the highly artistic and popular circle. It covers Polish, German, Yiddish and Hebrew as well as Russian-speaking phenomena – both those constantly present in contemporary social consciousness and those that are now forgotten. Dictionary entries are the result of extensive Polish and foreign queries, the fruit of which is the finding of many scattered sources and texts, including those unpublished over the last decades, and sometimes over a century. The entries of the Dictionary are original, their authors are Polish literary scholars, Germanists, Yiddish and Hebrewists, Russianists, theatre historians, library and press scholars, and historians.
