Deductive Systems and the Decidability Problem for Hybrid Logics

Deductive Systems and the Decidability Problem for Hybrid Logics

Author(s): Michał Zawidzki / Language(s): English

Keywords: hybrid logics; logic; deductive systems

Hybrid logics are powerful extensions of modal logics, which, roughly speaking, allow for referring to the semantics of the logic by means of syntactic tools. Augmenting standard modal logics with expressions of an additional sort - nominals, and the so-called satisfaction operators caused a spectacular boost to their expressive power. The satisfaction relation, accessibility statements and equality assertions, hitherto only expressible in meta-language, became available within the object language of the logic. A natural question arose: how do these highly expressive logics behave in terms of decidability? How much must we sacrifice to the altar of this increased expressive power? However, whereas the sole origins of hybrid logics can be traced back to the 1960s and the works of Arthur Prior, some additional ”computational” properties of these logics have become a subject of systematic research relatively recently. There has been a lot done since then, though. From the mid-1990s to the present times, a systematic theory of the computational complexity of hybrid logics has been developed by many researchers: Patrick Blackburn, Jerry Seligman, Carlos Areces, Maarten Marx, Thomas Schneider - just to mention a few. Up to now almost all the facts from this area of investigation have been revealed. Theorems placing particular hybrid logics in concrete complexity classes have been established for most of them, defined over most of the well-known frame classes. It seems that not much is left to be done.

Professional reintegration in social cooperatives

Reintegracja zawodowa w spółdzielniach socjalnych

Author(s): Michał Jerzy Sobczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: professional reintegration; social cooperatives

Spółdzielnie socjalne to jeden z rodzajów podmiotów gospodarki społecznej, który został wprowadzony do polskiego porządku prawnego w 2004 r. w celu przeciwdziałania wykluczeniu społecznemu.

Ethics in Economic Thought. Selected Issues and Various Perspectives

Author(s): Rafał Matera,Joanna Dzionek-Kozłowska / Language(s): English

Keywords: economics;financial crisis; ethics;corruption;consumption;

The monograph repeatedly covers the question of the actual purpose of running an economic activity as well as the problem of referring to ethical values by entrepreneurs and the Aristotelian dilemmas differentiating between needs and wants so as to better understand the evolution of societies towards consumerism. On the other hand, we referred also to the meaning of cultural factors, the role of religion or, in general terms, the significance of informal institutions in the development of societies. We tried to identify them in the context of the discussed problems of wealth and poverty of nations, reminding the reader in a way that the non-solved question has been a major issue of economic research for years, put on a kind of pedestal of the problems analysed in economics by the father of the discipline - Adam Smith. In respective chapters we referred to the concept present in modem economic literature of stimulating development and providing equal opportunities for less developed countries, which led to pondering about the role of the country in the economy both in a national and global context.

The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Normative Pillar of the African Regional Human Rights System

Afrykańska Karta Praw Człowieka i Ludów. Studium podstawy normatywnej regionalnego systemu ochrony praw człowieka

Author(s): Marek Jan Wasiński / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: African Charter; Human and Peoples' Rights; African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights; African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights

The African system, as the one most recently established, is frequently perceived as rudimentary, least developed and experiencing institutional shortcomings to such a great extent that it barely struggles to survive. Consequently, it has been attracting less scientific attention and still embodies the terra incognita for many international law scholars. The book demonstrates that, upon meticulous scrutiny, the African human rights system is a complex and persistent phenomenon founded upon numerous normative acts and evolving through a daily practice of specialized international organs. The analysis proves that it is virtually impossible to proceed with the mapping of the law of international human rights without considering recent developments in Africa. The true cornerstone of sources forming the African system was laid in 1981 with the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights by the Organization of African Unity. Therefore, the present study focuses on the Charter revealing the context of its adoption and presenting its procedural and institutional provisions as a normative backbone for the functioning of the regional system. It also provides accurate, comprehensive, methodical and critical presentation of the institutional guardians of the system: the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Court).

Author(s): Agnieszka Rejniak-Majewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Photojournalism; Reprography; Technical Reproductions; Transfiguration; Iconoclasm;Avant-Garde;

The publication is devoted to the role played by the means of technical reproduction and the image transmission processes in promoting avant-garde concepts of art in the early decades of the twentieth century. Referring to Walter Benjamin’s thesis from the 1930s that photography and the availability of reproduction changed the modern concept of art by offering new artistic tools, the author seeks to explore how the use of reproduction influenced the new ways of art presentation and the development of an international network of artistic exchange.

From Speech Acts to Speech Actions

Author(s): Iwona Witczak-Plisiecka / Language(s): English

Keywords: speech act;speech action;concept of language as action;ethnolinguistic;philosophical-linguistic perspective;phenomenologist perspective

From speech acts to speech actions- and back’ outlines recent developments in speech act theory (and pragmatics). It ties together many strands from classical thinking and earlier conceptions, with a new view on how speech theory could be further developed. I am impressed by the width and depth of the author’s knowledge and insight – on many occasions I found myself overtaken by her considerations, such as when she deftly combines my concept of the pragmeme with the independently developed notion of the ‘meme’. I find chapter five (and the entire book for that matter) extremely well researched and well-written. It will be suitable as a text in postgraduate and graduate courses, but will also stand out as an independent an important theoretical contribution.

Portfolio working. Psychological determinants and consequences

Zjawisko wielopracy. Psychologiczne uwarunkowania i konsekwencje

Author(s): Agnieszka Lipińska-Grobelny / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: multi-work;mono-work;portfolio employee;human resource management;conflict work-family;job satisfaction;life satisfaction

It turns out from the Eurostat data that Poland holds the third place in Europe in terms of the number of the so called portfolio workers, i.e. persons who work for more than one employer. Yet, it is a mistake to claim that portfolio working is a new phenomenon in our country. As early as in the 30. of the 20th century, almost 60% of professional workers earned their living additionally from farming. Nevertheless, the contemporary portfolio working is changing its character. Portfolio workers are usually persons with high professional experience and unique qualifications. They include for example physicians, nurses, teachers, academic teachers, lawyers, translators, journalists. What are their motives to search for an additional job? Financial motives are the major ones, but also a chance for constant professional development, and even the sense of autonomy and security due to becoming independent from one employer.

Author(s): Jaroslaw Wierzbiński / Language(s): English,Russian,Polish

Keywords: Soviet Union (USSR);Russia;totalitarianism;soviet onomastics; soviet toponymy;stalinism;

This book subscribes to the analysis of the Russian language in the 20th century and addresses a wide spectrum of notions from the Russian cultural and linguistic reality of this century, that is in the context of Soviet mass culture. The present author focuses on the issues central to the formation of reality after 1917 and on shaping the Russian language at the time, its vocabulary in particular, which represents the people’s mentality at the time. The time concerns ideological and rhetorical picture of the world presented, mainly the view of language and its manifestation in Russia after the revolution. This research shows an interdisciplinary orientation. Linguistic analyses were extended by issues relevant to semiotics, culture studies, sociolinguistic and psycholinguistics in reference to different communicative contexts. The theoretical basis is enriched by cognitive linguistics. Based on its primary assumptions and concepts, this work discusses the most important aspects of the Russian linguistic presentation of reality. This work shows a contemporary insight into the Russian language of the 20th century, offering a perspective from the turn of the century and in the context of ongoing changes in Russia.

Keywords: industrialization of cities;economy of cities;demography of cities;industrial cities;pre-industrial cities;urban development;the Łódź Voivodeship

The publication concerns urban development and its factors. The author has attempted to identify the conditions of urban development from a dynamic perspective, on the basis of the towns of the Łódź Voivodeship (excluding Łódź) – since their foundation until 2011. The topic has been analysed in three categories: sociocultural, economic and administrative. Based on the results, the author created her own typology of urban development paths of the towns studied. The method of identifying and analysing urban development paths described in the book can be used as a research tool by other academic centres and may also inspire a relevant comparative study.

The image of Byzantine emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus’s “Ecclesiastical history”

Wizerunek władców bizantyńskich w Historii kościelnej Ewagriusza Scholastyka

Author(s): Kazimierz Ginter / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Antioch; Byzantine rulers; Byzantium; Eastern Christianity; Evagrius Scholasticus; Ecclesiastical history; Syria

The book has been dedicated to the reconstruction and analysis of the image of Byzantine emperors (from Theodosius II to Maurice) as seen in the sixth-century Byzantine historian Evagrius Scholasticus’s “Ecclesiastical history”. The author perceives the image of emperors as consisting both of their direct description (personality, virtues and vices, as well as their appearance etc.) and indirect depiction – extrapolated from their policies and events that took place during their reign, which could be treated by Evagrius as the result of their rule. The book is not only a rich source of our knowledge on Evagrius Scholasticus, his literary craft and inspirations, but it also constitutes an interesting panorama of the history of the eastern part of the Roman Empire in the 5th and 6th centuries. “When characterising the work, one more aspect of the research methodology should be mentioned. Kazimierz Ginter belongs to the generation of scholars who eagerly employ modern instruments of scientific work, thus enlarging the set of research tools for late antiquity. Analysing the written material, he opted for an instrument designed for identifying convergent points and specifying their provenance (via the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae project), which enabled him to establish links between the main source and other ancient and Byzantine texts. I am convinced that Kazimierz Ginter’s work . . . presenting Evagrius and his work from the new perspective deserves to be published.”

Selected Phenomena and Processes Affecting the Development of the Polish Economy in the First Half of the 21st Century. Projections Based on the Macroeconomic Models System

Wybrane zjawiska i procesy wpływające na rozwój polskiej gospodarki w pierwszej połowie XXI wieku. Projekcje na podstawie systemu modeli makroekonomicznych

Author(s): Waldemar Florczak,Michał Przybyliński,Iwona Świeczewska,Łucja Tomaszewicz,Joanna Trębska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: financial markets;macroeconomic models;Polish economy;demographic processes

The publication presents the results of research undertaken as part of the National Science Centre project, “Determinants of the Development of the Polish Economy in the 21st Century: An Empirical Analysis and Projections Based on the Macroeconomic Models System” („Determinanty rozwoju polskiej gospodarki w XXI wieku. Analiza empiryczna i projekcje na podstawie systemu modeli makroekonomicznych”). Basic phenomena and processes that have emerged in the 21st-century Polish economy have been described and supplemented with projections showing their possible influence on the future economic development of Poland. The authors have focused on the effects of the projected changes on the demographic structure, technological progress, the accumulation of knowledge capital in the economy, further globalization manifesting itself as variations in the intensity and structure of the Polish foreign trade, and structural changes of cross-sector connections in financial markets. The simulation scenarios in the book describe possible fluctuations on the labor market, shifts in the structure and value of aggregate demand, changes in the generation and flow of income in the economy, and variations in the demand for financial instruments and their supply on the financial markets.Since the Polish economy exhibits the typical features of developed European economies, the analysis of phenomena and processes it undergoes has a universal character.

The Contemporary Assyrian-Aramaic Diaspora in Sweden

Współczesna diaspora asyryjsko-aramejska w Szwecji

Author(s): Marta Woźniak-Bobińska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Assyrian-Aramean diaspora; Assyrian/Aramean identity; Syriac churches; Church in Sweden; migration policy of Sweden; Sweden;Middle East; Assyrians/Arameans in Sweden; Middle Eastern Christians; integration

The publication discusses up-to-date issues concerning the acculturation of a Middle Eastern group in a European country. The book is based on research conducted by the Author in 2014 in the Assyrian/Aramean diaspora in Sweden, within the framework of the “Defining and Identifying Middle Eastern Christian Communities in Europe” project. Assyrians/Arameans began to arrive in Scandinavia in the late 1960s, fleeing the wars and meagre economic prospects in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. Today, they constitute an active diaspora which contributes in various ways to the development of its new homeland and numbers around 150 000 people. The Author describes Swedish migration and integration policies, the history of the Assyrian/Aramean community in the Middle East, the phases and forms of institutionalisation in Sweden, internal dynamics as well as the group’s relations with external actors and its transnational links. One of the main findings of the book is that the ethno-national identity of this community was largely constructed in the Swedish diaspora and is considerably more complex than it had previously been described in research. The identity in question is not a single construct, but rather a few – if not a few dozen – variants, although polarisation resulting from the divide between Assyrians and Arameans/Suryoye/Syriacs is visible.

Measuring Impact of Nuclear Power on CO2 Emissions

Measuring Impact of Nuclear Power on CO2 Emissions

Author(s): Mariusz Plich,Łukasz Konopielko,David Pupovac / Language(s): English

Keywords: nuclear power;CO2 emmisions

The Paris Agreement aims to reduce the risks and effects of climate change. To this end, radical action is required, including a change in the energy mix towards zero-emission energy. One of the possibilities is the responsible development of nuclear energy. This monograph is the result of an international research project coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency on the potential role of nuclear energy in mitigating climate change. Within this framework, a multisectoral macroeconomic model has been developed and tested for assessing the impact of different energy supply options on the decarbonisation process. The book presents both methodological and practical aspects of model construction, as well as simulation results for the scenario of implementation of the nuclear program included in the draft Energy Policy of Poland until 2040.

Voluntary Disclosure of Financial Information

Dobrowolne ujawnienia informacji finansowej

Author(s): Ewa Śnieżek,Michał Wiatr / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: voluntary disclosures; business reporting; cash flow statement; balance sheet; profit and loss account; accounting theories

The study attempts to present solutions for improving voluntary disclosures of financial information in business entities’ reports. It therefore shows their significance in the 21st-century business report, and thus indicates the need to shape a new reporting model as the basic carrier of information about a company. The study covers a multifaceted presentation of the issues of improving contemporary financial reporting through solutions for additional, voluntary disclosures of information considered in the context of modern trends in business reporting of a financial situation, achievements, as well as business development opportunities of a company. The first chapter discusses the issue of voluntary disclosures in business reports in the light of criticism of modern financial reporting. Theoretical aspects of voluntary disclosures and related communication gaps as well as determinants of their development have been presented here. This chapter also introduces research on voluntary disclosures of both financial and non-financial information. It also presents results of an empirical study on shaping and visualizing financial and non-financial information. The study is a review of users’ needs to improve annual reports here. The second chapter discusses balance sheet theories as the foundation for creating modern models of financial reporting, focusing not only on the assumptions of a balance sheet theory by an entrepreneur Wilhelm Osbahr, but also on C. Sganzini’s and E. Schmalenbach’s works, as well as on the theories by E. Walb and E. Kosiol. This chapter also presents the concept of repetitive operational cash flows as part of a business report. The third chapter introduces solutions for extra voluntary disclosures of a balance sheet, a profit and loss account, as well as a cash flow statement, while the last chapter presents the results of the survey of respondents’ opinions on solutions for additional voluntary disclosures in enterprises’ annual reports. The chapter ends with recommendations regarding the future of extra voluntary disclosures and their role as an element of multifaceted communication in the context of challenges for the modern enterprise accounting system.

Developments in Labour Law from a Comparative Perspective

Developments in Labour Law from a Comparative Perspective

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: labour law;labour theory;Labour Law Education Society (LLES);Polish legislation

The need for comparative studies of labour law seems indisputable, inasmuch it arises from the international character of many labour law norms, as well as from the interconnection between working and social relations which are often conditional and international. Thus, it appears that academic research into the field of labour law would be incomplete without its comparative facet. For these reasons, numerous networks of international cooperation between labour law scholars are being established on both formal and informal levels. The underlying idea is to find a common denominator for the discourse concerning the present condition of labour law, and pathways for its further development. The Labour Law Education Society, established in 2012 at the initiative of Prof. Charles F. X. Szymanski, is one of the networks attempting to accomplish this objective. Its early days were crowned with Developments in Labour Law from a Comparative Perspective, a conference held on 23rd–24th of May 2014 at the AllerhandInstituteʼs branch in Cracow, Poland. The present volume, which is an outgrowth of that conference, presents certain current issues frequently discussed in the realm of labour law. Also, it contains chapters considering the most significant developments within the discipline.
