Reborn Poland on the overseas markets. The Polish and Arab trade in 1918-1939 (100 Years of Independence series)

Odrodzona Rzeczpospolita na rynkach zamorskich. Handel polsko-arabski w latach 1918-1939

Author(s): Konrad Banaś / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish and Arab trade; international trade 1918-1939; economy of Arab countries 1918-1938; North Africa; Middle East; Algeria; Saudi Arabia; Egypt; Iraq; Kuwait; Lebanon; Libya; Marocco; Palestine; Sudan; Syria; Tunisia

This book is the first comprehensive analysis of trade between Poland and Arab countries in the interwar period. The main source material is archives, which are the legacy of the activity of Polish diplomatic establishments, consular institutions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the first place, the reader is introduced to the situation of reborn Poland and the evolution of its trade relations with foreign countries. At the same time, a new geopolitical system in the Arab world was presented that had been created after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Then, the book has a geographical layout, referring first to the countries of North Africa, and then to the Middle East. The first subchapters of the main part refer to the economic characteristics of a given Arab country and its foreign trade and customs tariff. The next part concerns Polish exports to a given Arab country broken down by the 1920’s and the 1930’s. This division allowed to show the dynamics of the trade turnover and the impact of the Great Depression on mutual exchange. Subsequently, imports to Poland are characterized. The next subchapters analyse the issues of bilateral communication, mixed chambers of commerce and the impact of trade fairs on the development of cooperation. At the end of each chapter, the author raises an issue of the conditions and balance of mutual trade. The book ends with a comprehensive summary that relates globally to the problem.

The image of a columnist and means of their verbal communicating

Wizerunek felietonisty i sposoby jego werbalnego komunikowania

Author(s): Anna Barańska-Szmitko / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: image research; discourse analysis; column newspaper; columnist; triangulation; linguistic analysis of image; image creation; image communication; language communication; expert

The purpose of the research presented in the book was to answer: what image effect can be achieved by what verbal actions? Rational constructivism theory of Michael Fleischer was applied in the study so the research procedure was intersubjective and the researcher’s influence on the results was minimized; it also verified the communicative effect and the intentions were not taken into account. The methods of social researches (experiment) were combined with the analysis of language content (discourse analysis). Over 500 students were reading columns - a genre that allows authors to freely express their personality and beliefs. Upon reading one of the four columnists’ texts, the respondents assigned image characteristics of the publicist, and later indicated those fragments which had constituted the basis for identifying the selected characteristics. The collected quotations were used as material for discourse analysis, which allowed to identify the means of communication specific to each image characteristic (language exponents). The analysis of answers allowed to define the image traits of a public figure, communicating on a verbal level, and also enabled to create a catalogue of exponents of these characteristics. This is the first catalogue of such type and the first one, which was created on the basis of empirical research with the participation of respondents.

Influence of word and picture on the image of a public figure

Wpływ słowa i obrazu na wizerunek osoby publicznej

Author(s): Anna Barańska-Szmitko / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: image; experiment; image research; column newspaper; picture; verbal image; visual image; columnist; interdisciplinary research; influence on image

The research problem presented in this study concerns image communication on a verbal level and through non-textual influences. More specifically, the aim is to define what image is possible to communicate by means of words (verbal image), through pictures (visual image), and how non-textual knowledge and perception of the text author (public image) affect his/her verbal image. The theoretical and methodological basis was Michael Fleischer’s rational constructivism. The results of the research presented in the study relate to the image of four Polish publicists: Krzysztof Varga, Piotr Zaremba, Magdalena Środa and Szymon Hołownia. The experiment formula was used. Over half a thousand respondents read columns written by the aforementioned public figures, looked at photos or recalled associations with these names in order to define verbal, visual and public image. The selection of public figures examined in the study was deliberate - the columnists chosen for the research represent different attitudes and write about different subjects. The analysis allows to determine the characteristics of particular types of images (verbal, visual, public) and how they affect one another.

Lviv and Łódź at the Turn of 20th Century. Structure of Economic Space

Author(s): Bartosz Bartosiewicz,Mykoła Habrel,Natalia Lysyak,Anna Hoblyk,Stanisław Kozłowski,Svitlana Shults,Iwona Pielesiak / Language(s): English

Keywords: Lviv;Łódź;technical infrastructure;housing;economic space;socio-economic linkages

The attempt to make a comparative study of Lviv and Łódź in search of certain regularities seems at the first glimpse rather farfetched, because apparently there are rather few analogies between the city of Lviv with its long history and multifunctional tradition and the monofunctional, rather young, industrial city of Łódź. But deeper analysis shows that despite many differences in the course of the history of both cities, some common tendencies can be traced, such as dynamic demographic and spatial development in the second half of the 19th century based on introduction of railway transport, the building of socio-economic and spatial structures of these cities by multi-cultural local communities, and going through half-a-century period of centralized socialist economy after the Second World War. Lviv and Łódź regained political independence almost at the same time (1989 in Poland and 1991 in Ukraine) and entered the route of democratic development, undergoing political and socio-economic transformations during the last 20 years. As a result of these processes as well as the influence of globalization, today we can observe in Łódź and in Lviv similar problems and phenomena, influencing their spatial development and functional restructuring.

Didactic and Communication Aspects of Academic E-learning

Dydaktyczne i komunikacyjne aspekty e-edukacji akademickiej

Author(s): Agnieszka Wierzbicka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: linguistics; e-learning; online academic discourse; distance shortening in online academic discourse; e-learning methodology; online course

Since the late 90s of the 20th century, e-learning and its variants: blended learning, mobile learning; have become rapidly developing forms of education in Poland. Although acknowledging its legal status as an element of higher education lasted almost ten years, the lengthy process did not slow down the development of e-learning. The growing number of participants of e-classes, and graduates of distance studies proves the increase of trust put in this form of education. The aim of the research is to analyse didactic issues and linguistic phenomena occurring in e-academic education, the presence of which results from the nature of communication typical of educational discourse, but also from network communication. A theoretical introduction is followed by the analytical part of the research (chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). In the analysis of didactic phenomena (chapter 2), particular emphasis is put on creating the concept of a methodical e-classroom project that can be implemented in five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The supplementary element of this description is the case study (chapter 3) based on the e-course (e-lecture on the subject of the Polish language culture taught by the author at the department of the Polish philology at the University of Lodz in the academic year 2016/2017). The subsequent chapters (4, 5 and 6) focus on the analysis of linguistic phenomena occurring during various online classes conducted at three Lodz universities: the University of Lodz, Prof. J. Chechliński Higher University of Finance and Information Technology in Łódź, and the Polish Virtual University. The considerations of communication as it is performed during e-classes fall within the broad scope of language pragmatics, because they concern intentional communication activities and semantic structures that organize a language message.

Determinants of Development Activity in the Polish Housing Market

Czynniki determinujące działalność deweloperską na polskim rynku mieszkaniowym

Author(s): Agata Antczak-Stępniak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: development activity; residential market; development determinants

Development activity in Poland has been expanding constantly for almost 30 years. Although initially the transformation period was not favourable for developers, today the number of apartments delivered by them is the largest since the 1990s. This activity, however, is strongly diversified in terms of territory, both on a supranational basis as well as within a given country. Therefore, it can be said that a variety of factors influence development activity. The main goal of this monography was to identify potential factors of the growth of development activity in the Polish residential market and to determine the gradation of their validity using, among others, statistical and econometric tools based on the example of selected cities, as well as to present the consequences of differences in this area and to indicate the possibility of improving the conditions of development activity in the examined market. The surveys carried out using quantitative and qualitative methods have shown that development activity is influenced by both nationwide and local factors as well as those resulting from the specificity of real estate or the developer. Therefore, this activity should be stimulated through the use of all the determinants described in the monography. This requires a conscious involvement of both government and local government entities which should be vitally interested in improving the functioning of the residential market as well as the dynamics and effects of development activity in this market. Otherwise, the housing conditions of Poland’s population will improve at a very slow pace, differing significantly from social expectations.

Polish motifs in the life of Mikhail Heller

Polskie wątki w życiu Michaiła Hellera

Author(s): Jędrzej Piekara / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: the Literary Institute, USSR history; Russian emigration after World War II; communism; biography

The book is a result of several years of studies on the life and work of Mikhail Heller – a historian of Jewish origin born in the Soviet Union, an emigrant who is particularly closely related to Poland, Polish emigration institutions and Poles in this country and abroad. Mikhail Heller, through his personal, formal and scientific relations, was one of the few Russians for whom Poland – both contemporary to him and the one from pages of history – was not one of the potential Russian territories but a great centre of Latin civilization, rich in culture and history, the only country Russia was so closely connected with. Heller used to say that “the only history of Russia that we are able to write about is the Russian-Polish history” and believed that the normalization of relations between Poles and Russians should be one of the most important goals of both emigrations after the World War II.It was the idea of reconciling of Poland and Russia that has been the main object of interest for Heller, next to the critique of communism, for the thirty years that he spent in exile in France. He was associated with two Polish emigration centres: Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Institute and Andrzej Stypułkowski Overseas Publications Interchange. He found close friends in the Polish environment, especially Józef Czapski, whom he considered to be the most outstanding representative of the “silver age”, combining the ideal features of a Russian, a Pole and a European.Mikhail Heller, a relentless anti-communist, a dedicated critic of perestroika and Mikhail Gorbachev, a researcher on the subject of “homo sovieticus”, a talented historian, a literary scholar and chronicler-journalist, documenting the reality of the Soviet Union with his pen sharpness, was a great friend of Poland and this book’s aim is to tell the story of this friendship.

Public-private partnership – sharing knowledge and experience

Partnerstwo publiczno-prywatne – dzieląc się wiedzą i doświadczeniem

Author(s): Magdalena Załęczna,Katarzyna Olbińska,Anna Wojewnik-Filipkowska,Joanna Węgrzyn,Agata Kozłowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Public-private partnership; local government;regeneration;transport

Public-private partnership is both a fascinating and frustrating area of research. PPP is not a simple recipe for financial shortages experienced by public entities; it is a complicated mechanism that requires meeting many conditions to function efficiently. The authors present their thoughts and conclusions against the background of the existing state of knowledge about PPP and assess the level of institutional maturity of PPP in the context of public support for this formula in Poland. The monograph consists of six chapters. The first and second chapters constitute the theoretical foundation, describe the genesis and institutional conditions of public-private partnership, its subject, specificity, significance, and financing of PPP. The next chapter presents the state of the PPP market and the requirements for its development; it starts with an international framework to analyze the number, value, and areas of PPP application, then describes the situation in Poland against this background. The authors also investigate the success factors of public-private partnership projects. The fourth chapter is devoted to the issues of regeneration. The authors synthesize it and then present the historical conditions for developing PPP in regeneration in Great Britain to deliver Polish solutions and problems in this field. Chapter five, describing transport solutions in the PPP formula, has a similar practical dimension. The authors focus on the road, transport projects, and transport-related infrastructure, referring to British and Polish solutions. An extensive summary of the considerations carried out in work can be found in chapter six. The monograph ends with a synthetic conclusion.

Banking Union’s impact on financial stability – holistic approach

Banking Union’s impact on financial stability – holistic approach

Author(s): Klaudia Zielińska-Lont / Language(s): English

Keywords: financial supervision;financial stability;banking union

Financial market integration inside the European Union was a process that, at both regulatory and political level, was far behind the actual internationalization of European credit institutions. As a consequence, oversight over the activities of these institutions was both inefficient and distortive to market-based competition, as regulatory requirements imposed on banks in each country were different. The economic breakdown brought about by the financial crisis of 2008 has uncovered the deficiencies of the structures that were due to safeguard financial stability of the EU and at the same time have provided the necessary impulse to further integrate. A major step forward has been taken through agreeing on the project of a banking union, which, among others, envisaged centralizing the regulatory oversight over Europe’s largest credit institutions under the auspice of the European Central Bank. There have been many speculations about the impact that the banking union could have on financial stability on one hand and the condition and competitiveness of the credit institutions on the other. The aim of this monograph is to assess the net impact of the integration of supervisory tasks under the first pillar of the banking union on the largest credit institutions, considering their profitability, liquidity and risk exposure. To achieve this goal, a dedicated synthetic measure has been constructed that enabled quantifying the net impact on banks performance and allowed verifying how well the supervised banks have managed to adapt to the new regulatory environment. The presented research method facilitates a useful tool for tracking the changes to the relative performance of banks and hence can be a useful early warning tool when it comes to monitoring financial stability.

Psychological contract in the changing world of work - before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

Kontrakt psychologiczny w zmieniającym się świecie pracy - przed pandemią COVID-19 i w trakcie jej trwania

Author(s): Anna Rogozińska-Pawełczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Personal Economics;Organisational Behaviour;Psychological Contract;Work Relationships;Pandemic COVID-19

The issue of psychological contract is of interest to management theoreticians and practice. The current of research on the development and role of psychological contracts in Poland is included in this monograph, which addresses this issue in theoretical terms by presenting the current state of knowledge, and in practical terms by discussing the results of research with recommendations for building psychological contracts. The aim of this monograph was to illustrate the psychological contracts of Polish employees in the changing world of work, and the main purpose of the research was to investigate the differences in the psychological contracts of employees and employers and to find factors that cause these differences and shape the framework of psychological contracts. The measurement of trait-based psychological contracts became the basis of the research model adopted. Six dimensions were proposed and traits were identified for each dimension to capture the nature of contemporary psychological contracts. To achieve the research objective, two quantitative studies were conducted in a time lag. Both research endeavours provided new data to extend the knowledge on psychological contracts, especially their characteristics in the period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study contributes to the research on psychological contracts using a trait-oriented approach to find differences in the psychological contracts of Polish employees and to find the factors that cause these differences and shape psychological contracts. As a result of the discussions, knowledge in the area of contractual understanding was expanded to include a number of other issues that make up the employer-employee relationship, and the perception of contract from the perspective of the manager in the role of employee and employer was brought closer, indicating the specificity of psychological contracts prevalent before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reading Interactive Images. Perspectives on Computer Games and Dynamic Textually

Czytanie interaktywnych obrazów. Gry komputerowe w perspektywie dynamicznej tekstualności

Author(s): Katarzyna Prajzner / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: computer games;narration;text;storyworld;convergence;new media

Computer games are one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving media of our time. The book combines perspectives from such fields as game theory, literary and film theory, and game studies, to outline a theory of what computer games are, how they work with the player, the main focus however is on how they work as texts and create meaning. It also provides an introduction to the analysis of computer games as well as combines methods of textual analysis and audience research, showing how the combination of such methods can give a more complete picture of these playable texts and the cultures they generate. One of the arguments is that game spaces can evoke narratives because the player is interpreting them in order to engage with them and is possible to approach game spaces not as pure visual spectacles but as meaningful virtual location. The book also explores how media give birth to various types of storyworlds and provide different ways of experiencing them, taking part in ongoing theoretical conversation focused on the problem how can narratology achieve media-consciousness.
